Apparently the last time The Police played together at Sting's wedding they nearly got into a fist-fight 'cus Steward started Message In A Bottle too fast and Sting was screaming at him. Andy said afterward "it was just like old times." [smile]

  3. Yo all! I've seen Ani a bunch of times, she is one of the best live performers around today, bar none. She's also a kick-ass guitarist and songwriter. FYI the show at Massey on the 27th is a solo show, which should be very cool.

Oh, and a couple of Ani fast-facts:

    • Not that I personally think it makes any difference at all, but contrary to popular belief Ani is NOT a lesbian (or at least her husband doesn't seem to mind if she is!) [smile] But I have been to a bunch of her shows, and they certainly are well represented in her audience.
    • Ani's label Righteous Babe does indeed feature Drums & Tuba, also Bitch and Animal, Sara Lee, Utah Phillips and others.
    • Ani has had serious Canadian representation in her band for the last couple of years - Andy Stochansky was her drummer up until a few years ago, and her current bassist Jason Mercer was a member of the late-great Toronto band Bourbon Tabernacle Choir (and the Bourbon connection goes further, Chris Brown and Kate Fenner opened up for her a few years back as well.)

Do yourself a serious favour, if you're free check her out on 27th!

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  4. Saw this yesterday, if you haven't already SEE IT!

While I did think some of what Moore was saying was a bit simplistic or contradictory in places, if you treat it as an amusing and thought-provoking (albeit biased) look at the topic, you couldn't get a much better one. A totally excellent way to spend two hours.

FYI, in Toronto it's playing at SilverCity Eglinton and I think at Yorkdale.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  5. Scary-scary: Mule Varations by Tom Waits - not the whole album, but the song "What's He Building?" - turn the lights off and listen to that, I dare ya!

Embarrassing-scary: Jeez, that's hard for me 'cus I've got such cheesey taste! Perhaps Age Of Plastic by the Buggles. Yes, I am the one guy in North America who has it on CD.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

P.S. Yo Ms. H, I love Glory of Gerswin too! I'm a sucker for anything with great harmonica playing anyway, and Rhapsody In Blue is one of the greatest examples of chromatic playing on record, period.

  6. Hey all!

"Little Pieces", an acoustic song from Uncle Seth's latest CD Lame Suburban Poetry has been selected as the PICK OF THE WEEK in UmbrellaMusic's "The Next Level" contest:

    http://www.umbrellamusic.com/

I'd encourage other folks from bands who hang out here to enter by following the SUBMIT link on the contest page. Apparently at the end of 12 weeks they pick a big uber-winner who gets studio time and stuff.

Also, Uncle Seth will be playing a special show tonight (Friday) at The Blue Goose Tavern in Etobicoke. You can find an online map at:

    http://www.toronto.com/map?mode=geo&id=160831&lat=436166&lon=-794959

And there's NO COVER, so if you're in the west end of TO come on out and enjoy a few pints along with some great tunes.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

Yup, definitely not a scam. It's actually part of a network of sites that donate the profits of their click-throughs to worthy causes. The original one is The Hunger Site:

And if you scroll to the bottom of the page once you click through you'll see others. This is my daily habit - well, in addition to the one Booche suggested! [Wink]

[Confused] I thought saw plenty of people at the Oysterhead show last year at Massey...

And to be fair, as far as concerts in TO this year so far and coming up you've got The Who, The Stones, Springsteen, Rush, Yes, Peter Gabriel and Ani DiFranco, and that's only theatre and larger shows that I'm interested in, totally off the top of my head.

Whatever you think of those particular acts vs. some of the ones from last year is up to you, but personally I'd take any of 'em over Elton John! [Wink]

Uncle Seth are back in full-band mode on Saturday at Reilly's if you're interested, also a pay-what-you-can show. Should be a great one actually, they've got guest bass player Attila Barazka who's a monster.

Actually ended up driving Seth-singer Tara home, she had an early morning so I never got over to the 'shoe. How was it?

    Peace,

  10. Hmm.. I gotta say I have mixed feelings about this. The last thing "new" The Who recorded (I believe) was "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" on the Elton John tribute a few years back and frankly I thought that was pretty lame.

My personal feeling is that Townshend should do another solo album, and perhaps get Roger on as a guest voice, the way he had guests on Iron Man. But calling it The Who... I'm not sure I see the point at this stage, especially without John. IMHO anyway.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  11. Jeez, so I was just putting my real turkey in the oven (parents and in-laws coming over together for the first time! [Eek!] ) and the recommended cooking time for my 10 pounder is 4 1/2 hours... so my previous calculation on Big Bird was way off, it would be more like 90 hours!

    Sorry for any confusion. [Wink]

Happy Turkey (or whatever big bird suites you!),

    Mr. M.
