  1. This is a grammar bulletin for everyone. PERIODS AND COMMAS GO INSIDE QUOTATION MARKS.

Granted on the internet a little leeway is allowed I suppose (including spelling), this even occurs in major newspapers and magazines. I can't tell you how much this annoys me. I know I'm a nerd, but whatever. For the love of god, please put your periods and commas inside quotation marks.

  3. Here's my 2 cents, and a few more...

The Eternal Lightness of Being" - Milan Kundera - great book, beautiful writer

One Hundred Years of Soliture - one of my top 10 books ever. Marquez is one of the 20th century's greatest storytellers. Don't believe the discerning voices.

As for my summer reading thus far, I read an amazing, haunting book called "The Wildfire Season" by Andrew Pyper. Canadian writer, set in the Yukon, about a firefighter trying to escape his past, only to have his former lover and child he's never met come searching for him. If you've ever been to the Yukon, this will surely bring back memories.

Also in the midst of Bob Dylan's "Chronicles," and "The Apprenceticeship of Duddy Kravitz," by Richler.

Another recommendation, if you're into South America, photpgraphy, plants, and/or all the above, check out a book called "The Lost Amazon" by Wade Davis, who also wrote "The Serpent and the Rainbow." This is an essay, biography, and collection of photograps about Richard Schultes, the 20th century's foremost ethnobotanist, Hravard prof. who spent 12 years in the Amazon in the 40's and 50's. truly remarkable stuff. he classified magic mushrooms, ayahuasca, and 300 other plant species, and influences the rubber trade. his understated, intimate photographs capture a place and time and various people never seen on film before. beautiful book.

  4. i've seen a lot of gigs at soundscapes. it is one of the HOTTEST rooms you can see music in. soundscapes does not have A/C. on a day like today, the allure of seeing an up and coming band isn't very high on my list.

they were very good at the NXNE Now Magazine showcase.

  6. shainhouse i've taken the GRE's. i don't envy you. it was one hard test. i took them in dec 2001, and heard they reformatted the test since then. but my exam involved 3 sections - verbal, math, logic. the hardest part without a doubt is time. time limit is def. a killer. not to mention that if you get a question right, the next question is automatically harder.

my best advice. don't take too long to answer. you want to get through all the questions. so if you don't know it, guess. i also highly suggest spending more time on the verbal section in the next few days. i was a double literature major and writer and still found it difficult, and my marks showed it (the whole antonym thing is very hard. i didnt know half the words they were giving me, let alone the opposite!). but i did get 91st percentile in logic. go figure.

anyway, i never did my MFA in creative writing in the US anyway, and it was post-9/11, so it worked out for the best.

    good luck dude.

  7. I've been to Philly a few times. If you are not a vegetarian, Pat's Steaks is a world famous cheesesteak stand in the market area. It is without a doubt one of the greatest culinary experiences I have ever had, second maybe to Gino's pizza circa 1998 Phish Chicago run.

Also check out the Philadelphia museum of art, lots of impressionist paintings, and of course the Rocky steps.

Philadelphia is a really interesting city, lots of life, culture, all packed into downtown, but not nec. the kindest people.

    have fun!

  8. My short film Sombre Zombie (which I wrote the script for) will be airing this Wednesday, March 2nd, at 7:30 EST on BravoFact Presents - channel 40. Accepted into the 36th Nashville International Film Festival in April 2005, Sombre Zombie stars David Hirsh, the lead on Showcase's "Naked Josh." The directorial debut of Adam Macdonald, the film features several other amazing actors such as Jeff Roop (Vampire High) and Joris Jarsky (Foolproof).

Along with several other short films, it's a great little half hour every wed, showcasing emerging canadian filmmakers.

The film explores that split second where suddenly you blank, the 9-5 office malaise, and the very serious threat of zombies to our every day lives. All in 6 minutes!

Sombre Zombie. March 2nd. Be there.

P.S. This film is best viewed with a small snifter of brandy and a tightly rolled pinner.

  9. Andrew Whiteman is one of the many performers playing solo at the Bloor Cinema Feb 18th as part of a fundraiser for free Public Space. i think the website is www.publicspace.ca - a great cause, esp. for people into the music scene. if you havent seen the apostle of hustle (BSS guitar player) he kicks ass. also playing is sarah harmer. should be a great show!

  10. I went to the Experience Music Project over the holidays, my 2nd time there. The Dylan Exhibit was well done, though not mind-blowing if you know anything about Bob. Some of the more interesting items included a girl's yearbook in which Bob wrote, and a book of Byron's poetry that Bob wrote in and gave to his first girlfriend in New York. Oh, they also had a wall with mini-album covers of every band that's ever covered Blowin' in the Wind, at least 100.

As always, the museum is well worth the 20 US, and rather than the CD i got a poster of Bob from the early years, replete with his train hait and harmonica.

For Dylan lovers, I highly recommend making it to Seattle in the next year and checking it out.

  13. So after the debaucle that this message board has become because of one idiot, I thought I'd post a photo to lighten things up. Although I havent seen the Phish IT DVD yet, word is that during Waves (1st show, 2nd set), for 7 whole seconds, I'm in it! We were front row for both shows last summer, a fine way to end it with that band. And with all the cameras, we were hoping the band would make a DVD.

I don't know if this photo will work, as I don't know if I've figured out how to post. it's me behind the girl with the camera, and my crew on the railing, and i beleive that is Kate? from Toronto who was also down at the shows and ran into us. if it doesn't work, check out the DVD if you have it.

Anyone else have a love/hate relationship with a night liek this? I might have to skip them all cuz i can't decide!
