  1. Canned Beats ... Thanks for the heads up on Microbunny!

Tasha ... thanks ... now I am 100% positive I know who you are. Yes, I wanted to come to your place for the Guelph nero afterparty, but my pillow was calling me. I wish that I could say that I'd be there on the 6th, but I will be away on a camping trip. But I will take a rain check for a date as yet to be determined in the future [smile]

I will be at Hillside for sure with my family and we will be camped out at Guelph Lake for the whole weekend. Happy summer daze ...

    Peace, Mark

  2. Yes, I was pretty excited to see Michelle Shocked on the bill! I am even more excited to read that she will have a band with her ... that will be an awesome show!!!

Thanks for the heads up on Bitch and Animal.

I've also heard from a few friends that Passenger out of Guelph is a hot funk/jam/rock/jazz band.

Will you be at Hillside Tasha? I'm almost positive I know who you are, but I'm still sorting through the names of all of the great people I have met over the last few months!!!

    Peace, Mark

  3. It's a good question, h. I think they look great, but it would be a drag if people started to avoid the site because it took too long to load. I'm not necessarily representative of most people because I tend to be a person who focuses on web site functionality rather than flashy presentation ... i.e. can I get the information I want from a site in a hurry. I guess finding the right balance between functionality and look is key.

    Any other feedback?

    Peace, Mark

  4. Perhaps we should include that one when we update the images of the week in the Come Together at Frontier Town forum. And it certainly does fit in with the theme of the page I created so maybe I'll try to squeeze it in the next time the frontier town site gets updated.

Oh the memories ...... how they make me smile!

    Peace, Mark

  5. Frontier Town location & directions:

Frontier Ghost Town is located approximately 2 hours northwest of Toronto, 90 minutes north of Kitchener, and 30 minutes south of Owen Sound.

    Looking at a map:

    - follow Highway 6 north of Guelph and continue north on Highway 6 about 10 km past Durham

    - turn right on Grey Road #12

    - look for Frontier Ghost Town Camp Grounds approximately 1 minute down Grey Road #12 on your right hand side

Here is the link to the page:

    Hope that helps!

    Peace, Mark

  6. MarcO ... you are correct, and that makes you and I and a whole bunch of Fatties fans happy happy happy.

The Fatties will be doing the regular Tuesday gig at La Luna, with the exception of Tuesday July 9, as (some of) the band will be in Toronto at the Phil Lesh show.

I can't wait to hear them at Frontier Town!!!

    Peace, Mark

  7. Brad, I agree that the train option doesn't seem too appealing. By the way, Evolve is on Aug. 23, 24, 25.

Flying is definitely appealing because of the speed of travel. Approx. $350 for a return ticket plus transport needed to and from the airport. Both Moncton and Halifax are a few hours from Antigonish, where the festival is being held.

I love the idea of chartering a bus, but it is only feasible with an up front financial commitment from 30 or more people to bring the price into the $300 range. But it would be a blast and we would be styling. Plus no one would have to drive.

I'm also thinking that we could rent a 15 passenger van and fill it with 8 people and all of our gear. I'm estimating that this would work out to $200 to $250 per person. This isn't the most comfortable option and it would mean sharing the driving, but it is a very flexible option and would also be a lot of fun.

I'm thinking that the cost of gas to drive a car to Evolve from Toronto would be in the $250 to $300 range (round trip cost).

Ideally, some people will be able to turn it into an East Coast holiday. I already have other summer holiday plans so this is not an option but I highly recommend that people consider taking a week or two of summer vacation and building the Evolve festival into a nice Maritime summer holiday.

Any other feedback from people? Does anyone know where we could rent a bus or RV more cheaply? Does anyone know if Further Bus lines are still in operation? (I think that is what they are called.) Other suggestions and comments are appreciated.

No matter how we get there, one thing is certain ... Evolve is going to be loads and loads of fun!!!

    Peace, Mark

  8. How many people would be interested in a van rental or in chartering a bus to make the trip to Evolve. I'm thinking of leaving from Kitchener, with possible pick up points along the 401.

I'm thinking we'd leave Kitchener on Thursday afternoon, arrive at Evolve on Friday afternoon (when the fest starts), leave Evolve on Sunday night when the fest ends (around 9 p.m. I think), and arrive back in Kitchener on Monday night.

I've made a few calls and when I crunch some numbers we'd be looking at a price per person for the transportation of $200 to $400 per person, depending on the mode of transport and the number of people.

Feedback please. Are people into making a commitment (i.e. coming up with money in advance) to make this happen? It would be a blast, and it would be cheaper than flying.

Post your commitment level, suggestions, ideas etc. or email me with your feedback.

    Peace, Mark

  9. OK everyone ... let's make this happen!!!

We should/can/will/must get a convoy happening to the Evolve festival.

I am going and would love to see a group of us go in a bus or big recreational vehicle.

I plan on leaving on Thursday afternoon and I must be back in Kitchener on Tuesday morning, so it will be a whirlwind tour, but if we had a bunch of drivers and a big enough vehicle, it could work beautifully.

If that doesn't happen, I will be looking at flight options, but I'd love to do the driving trip if possible.

    Other thoughts or ideas???

    Peace, Mark

  10. You are all so kind!

Wow, it has been a while since I gave out copies of that recording to anyone. And even longer since I recorded it ... my daughter Katlin is now 8, she was 2 when I recorded Endless Combinations.

Dave Scully is a wonderful guitar player, imho. Knows LOTS of Dead tunes. I used to jam with him and Tim Fisher (a super drummer and human being who knows as many Dead tunes as Dave does) and Neil "Snail" Torrie (guitarist and master of effects). And I had a few teacher friends and students help out as well.

I must admit, my playing has been really sporadic of late. Most of my music energy of late has gone into promoting and dancing.

I'm really glad I blew the dust off those tapes and brought them up to Frontier Town. I'll have to bring some more on Canada Day and give them out before tape decks become totally extinct.

I do have the recording on DAT and fairly recently transferred it to CD so I will get a CD copy into a few hands for sharing. At times the recoding makes me smile and shiver with excitement, and at times it makes me cringe. But it was most definitely a satisfying project. I really enjoyed blending tracks and songs recorded in a studio environment with recordings of live jams.

Thanks again to everyone for the kind words and for making it easy for me to want to share.

    Peace, Mark

  11. News

27 May, 2001 - A spokesperson for DownTime annouced today that the band will be joined by ex-Burt Neilson Band member, Jeff Heisholt, on keyboards. This addition will undoubtedly add some interesting sonic textures and blazing solos to DownTimes already infectious grooves and jams.

  12. Hey Shawn,

Mike Knoll and I have talked about a web version, and certainly it is doable. Let me bounce around the idea with him again.

In the meantime, watch your mailbox for issue two ... a big step up from issue one, imho. Some copies of issue two have made their way to the west coast - a bunch were mailed to Vancouver to Craig Glenn of Hipstar Productions. He is a big supporter of this venture.

Right now our biggest challenge is to find enough advertising/sponsorship revenue to make this thing grow even more. We are still at the point where the demand for the magazine exceeds the supply. We have a solid distribution network in Southern Ontario, the Ottawa area, the Maritimes, and Vancouver ... now we need some more revenue so we can get the magazine into more hands. Having said that, a web version could also help to get the magazine into more hands.

Thanks for your support, Shawn. You have done a lot to help the scene grow and become more vibrant, you have helped to get great music into the ears of many appreciative fans (mine included), and I hope to meet you in person at some point in the not-too-distant future.

    Peace, Mark
