  1. I think I posted about this show a while ago but couldn't find the thread, so here's more info about the show:

    Harvard Mousemas

    Wed. Dec. 28

    upstairs at the Lancaster Tavern

    Kitchener

    no cover

early show from 7 - 8 p.m. (we're playing a set for our kids and families, so feel free to come out early and bring your kids if you have 'em)

late show from 9 p.m. until it ends (this will be a full-on jam; we've got a second drummer joining us on this night, and some guest musicians are coming out as well, so it should be a blast!)

Looking forward to the holidays, and hope to see some of you there.

    Peace, Mark

  2. Thanks to Chewie and MarcO for sharing their anniversary thoughts, as this was also my first Phish show. Ten years ago! It's scary how quickly time passes.

Chewie said "also, i remember walking into the venue wondering why there was a giant chess board over the stage...it also very cold that day...wow."

Ditto for me ... I distinctly remember those two things about this show experience. I was dressed for the cold, with a winter coat, hat, mitts, etc. and I was still cold.

MarcO said "The shock of Jerry’s passing and the hurt of two subsequently cancelled Toronto GD shows had faded a little and I thought it would be good for me to dip my toe into these waters and see what all the fuss was about."

I was at a similar point when I decided to check out Phish at this show for the first time.

    -----

My show thoughts ... sorry for the pun, but I was hooked after this show. The Split Open & Melt and Mike's Song > Weekapaug totally blew my mind. I think that I owned Hoist and had no other Phish music at the time of this show, but I distinctly remember being blown away by the music that the band played on this night ... I remember describing the show to people as having awesome spiral/swirl jams, where a jam would get more and more intense and just when you thought the jam/song peaked, another spiral would happen that was more intense than the last one. That's probably the thing that I miss the most about Phish ... those jams that bust through to the other side of a peak, and reach an even higher peak, and bust through again.

  3. Skank A said something which was misinterpreted by Skank B, who posted something about it which Skank C thought was a joke, so Skank C added to the joke but Skank D thought that Skank D was serious and replied seriously to a joke, and this was funny to Skank E who had been watching the whole thing unfold after having private messaged Skank A about the original post, then Skank E private messaged Skank D to clear it up, but by then Skank F had said something else to Skank D about something else, but Skank D thought it related to the original post by Skank A, so Skank D posted again with this in mind, but Skank B didn't know about the private messages so posted something which Skank C took seriously, and then Skanks G, H, and I posted about things kind of related to the topics originally posted by Skanks A, B & C, but those three Skanks weren't thinging about the original posts anymore, they were thinking about other posts, and then a bunch of other Skanks logged into the board and saw all of this and one of them decided to do a Roll Call to determine if anybody else didn't know what was going on, and apparantly lots of other Skanks are as clued out as the original Skanks A through I who really didn't know what was going on either, so I think that we should all reply to this roll call.

Hopefully that clears things up once and for all.

  4. OK, I'm not done with this thread ... Willy's post made me smile and chuckle and now MarcO's post has me laughing my ass off ... my office mate doesn't know what to think as I sit here with a huge giggly grin on my face.

OK, now I'm really done with this thread ... gotta get working on some other things.

    Peace, Mark

  5. My apologies if the words dictator or dictatorship offended anybody. I didn't mean to offend anybody, and if I did, I'm sorry. I really am sorry if I called somebody something that they didn't want to be called, although I am laughing as I type this because of what I wrote a few hours ago about apologizing. ;):);)

Bouche, I still think that you rock, and I am still very thankful for all that you do. I hope that I haven't offended anybody by saying so. :);):)

Wi!!y, I look forward to the next time that I get to see you in person instead of in cyberspace. It's been too long, my friend, and nothing beats the old fashioned person-to-person method of communication.

OK, I think that I'm done with this thread.

    Peace, Mark

  6. Well, seems I have stirred up some anger issues with a couple folks, well my intention was & is not to give Mike a hard time. As mentioned in my post, there was no offence meant. I was simply wondering so I asked. If that comes across as a 'sense of entitlment' to some of ya'll theres not much I will or can say I guess.

I certianly do not expect Mike to answer to me about other peoples threads and the reasons for them being deleted or locked. I never saw the locked thread that started all this but I did see a later one deleted & locked.

Although not really an issue now, I have had it occur in the past to me & without explanation so when the topic came up yesterday I decided to reply & make my comments on the issue. Obviouly I asked & commented at an inappropiate time. (see my first comments in this thread), I guess I was more wondering about the issue as a whole not a specfic thread, although that certianly wasn't clear, which is my mistake.

In no means do I feel like this place is a democracy and have really never felt it was, nor do I expect anything here, except to have a good time, unfortunatley my humor is obviously not reacted to very well on some topics (eg: the red bolded statement in my posts), again my problem not others.

I'm extremely grateful to Mike & all his hard work he's done & does for our community. I wasn't at all pissed off or irked yesterday over any of this, but my apologys to Mike for any of my comments that offended, not my intent.

Greg, thanks for this post. It's nice when people are willing to say sorry, even if they didn't mean any harm. Personally I wasn't offended by any of your comments from yesterday, but if others were, thanks for the post.

I had to deal with a situation today at school similar to this, where somebody was offended at what somebody else said. Personally, I didn't think what was said was very offensive, but somebody else did. However, the person who made the questionably offensive remark didn't say "Sorry if I offended you. I didn't mean to, but I'm sorry if I did." Instead they said "You shouldn't be offended by that." Not a great way to resolve a conflict ...

    Peace, Mark

  7. This community exists because of every single person that takes part in it. Remove the participants and the community vanishes. What Mike has provided, or offered, is a 'location' for the community to inhabit. There have been and still are other 'locations'.

Mike has contributed an unfathomable amount of time, energy, and passion, into providing this environment for our community to occupy. I have loved and will continue to love him for those efforts. However; that does not give him 'ownership' of the community nor does it grant him an unchallenged 'dictatorship' over the community. Mike owns a domain name and possibly some software. We, the people, are the community and no one owns that.

I know that you are trying to be supportive of Mike, but please give this some additional thought.

In our community, the whole is far greater than the sum of its individual parts.

I agree with you Willy. The community exists in a location, and this is the location. Ultimately, bouche gets to make decisions about this location, such as how the site will look, what should be allowed or not allowed, etc. Of course he is going to listen to us when making decisions. He's our friend. We're his friend. He respects us. We respect him. We respect each other. Many of my closest "real life" friends are a part of this cyberspace community. Having said that, ultimately bouche has the right to make the call, because it's his location. The person hosting the party gets to set the house rules. And if we don't like the rules, we can leave the party. Absolutely correct.

So I use the term dictatorship instead of democracy in the sense that we can't vote Mike out of a job or out of office. Yes, we can do what some people (try) to do if they are not happy with the dictator of the country, and that's leave to find another location to live in.

Personally, this location has treated me well. I've enjoyed it a lot, have developed friendships with people because of it, learned things, laughed, and got excited about events because of it. And yes, sometimes I've been pissed at what goes on, and have taken breaks from visiting.

I honestly, from the bottom of my heart, hope that people continue to think that this location is a nice place to visit. Because as Willy said, if the participants leave then the community vanishes. And that would be a sad day for me, as this community means a lot to me.

    Peace, Mark

  8. The way I see it, this forum is not a democracy. I think Mike can do whatever the hell he wants, without having to answer to anyone. Instead, we should just thank him for bringing so many like-minded folks together and never asking us for a penny.

I would also like to add, that if I requested a thread be locked or deleted, which I never have, I would not want, or even permit, Mike to share the details of the issue with anyone, especially in a public forum.

    Rock on bouche.

    Ditto.

What I like even more about this site is that it feels like a democracy. It's a dictatorship that feels more democratic than many democracies, if that makes sense. Rock on, dictator bouche! ;):)

On a related note, it's pretty mind-blowing to imagine how many hours Mike has spent working on this web site, from the time it first started as Phish Sanctuary until now. Here's my guess ... 5000 hours. That's over 2 years of full-time work. OK, maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's only 4500 hours. Or 4000. ONLY ... ha! I think that you get my point. Yes, it is easy for me to get ticked off or frustrated when something happens on this site that I disagree with. It happens. Maybe bouche's site layout doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I disagree with the content that it is included, or how it is displayed. Maybe I don't like that some post got blocked or deleted. But ultimately, I think about the massive effort that has gone into this site, and I am just thankful that somebody with bouche's skills is willing to spend so much time and energy on this site. Thank you so much for all that you do, Mike! You rock, and please continue to rock on!

On another related note, I'll use this opportunity to promote a show that I, along with some other people, are putting together. I hope that lots of people come out to this show as a way of showing support for this site, and because THE SHOW IS GOING TO BE A BLAST! Here's the plan so far:

    Sat. Jan. 28, 2006

    Jambands.ca FUNdraiser

    Lancaster Tavern, Kitchener

    two floors / two stages

    Fat Cats

    Diesel Dog

    What The Thunder Said

    Harvard Mouse

    Organic Groove

We've got some special things cooking for this show, and are working to make the show reflect the nature of the people that belong to this community ... in other words, it's going to be a top-shelf event!

    Peace, Mark

  9. I don't think Bouche has enough server space to hold TimmyB's response.

    ad

Well said, ad! Has anybody seen more "big acts" than Timmy B.???

I know that I don't have nearly as many ticket stubs, or concert experiences, as many of you. But it isn't a contest to me, that's for sure. And I don't think that I'm much of a collector. Heck, I've even given away all of my vinyl. But for some reason, I do save ticket stubs. I've had many of the best times in my life at concerts, and I think that I save the stubs to help me trigger memories that make me smile and laugh and reflect and ponder and wonder.

Right now I'm staring at a piece of wood that a number of years ago I "hodge podge glued" a number of stubs to, all of them from the 1980's and 19990's. A few of my favourites from multiple shows are:

Probably my favourite two night run ever:

Peter Gabriel Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto Nov. 8, 1982

Peter Gabriel Shea's Theatre Buffalo Nov. 9, 1982

A signed photo and a number of ticket stubs from the reggae band Messanjah

A number of Grateful Dead ticket stubs ... I especially like the sparkly mail order ones

A few Ted Nugent ticket stubs ... ok, I admit that he's an egotistical racist "red-neck" in a lot of ways, but it blew my mind when he blew up a Japanese guitar with a bow and arrow at Lulu's the first time I saw him.

All of my more recent stubs are stored in my dresser ... at some point when I get some time I hope to create another collage of stubs.

Time to get back to work! Man oh man it's easy to drift into concert la la land ...

    Peace, Mark

  10. There's no accounting for why I love those songs so much (just as there's no accounting for taste generally), but I do always have to be aware when it crowds out my appreciation of music I've never run across before, so thanks for pushing the question. Luckily there is this community of people here who do listen to music that asks us to pay attention, so I can always expect to be pushed in worthwhile directions.

    Well said, Dr. Evil!

I also think that a reversion to this "older" method of trading helps to encourage more of a community in a way that clicking a button and downloading does not.

Back in the bubble-mailer days, I felt a greater connection with virtual strangers in various parts of North America who took time out of their day to burn discs for me. There's a dude named Brad in Wisconsin that I can thank for 70% of my Phish collection.

Brad Sall ... he was the first person to ever do a B&P for me ... Phish 08-01-99 (Japan) ... we actually met up for a short visit in Ohio at a campground before a Phish show, because of the B&P's that he did for me. I really enjoyed that part of trading via snail mail ... the personal connections that came from it.

    Peace, Mark

  11. I can't remeber if this info has been posted yet, so here it is again in case it hasn't been. Sorry for the short notice. Peace, Mark

    ----------

    Greetings,

The 4th annual Tribute to Neil Young and Benefit Concert is happening at the Starlight in Waterloo on Saturday November 26. Proceeds from the night go to two great charities; R.O.O.F. in Kitchener which works to assist street youth, and the Bridge School in California for children with severe physical disabilities. I've included a more detailed description of each charity below.

The cover charge is $10 (suggested), but we're asking everyone to reach deep down and give as much as they can to support our cause. The line-up includes many of the areas finest musicians performing their favourite Neil Young tunes, so $10 really is a bargain. The doors open at 8:00pm and the show starts at 9:00pm. Come early if you want a seat and to enter the early-bird raffle.

Raffle? Yes! Many businesses in the area have been very generous in their support of the event by donating prizes for us to raffle off throughout the night. With their help we should easily reach our goal of $4000 to split between R.O.O.F. and the Bridge School. Prizes includie Neil Young CD's, free studio time, books, gift certificates, clothes, and a whole lot more, so bring some extra cash to get a chance to win a great prize and support the charities.

    Charity Information:

R.O.O.F. - Reaching Our Outdoor Friends:

    www.roof-agency.ca

Our agency is committed to working with street youth, aged twelve and up, in the KITCHENER-WATERLOO area focusing on the safety, support and overall well-being of homeless youth and youth at risk. We offer resources (or link youth with resources) that will allow them to develop the self-care and skills needed to stay alive and eventually move forward to more stable and healthy living situations.

    THE BRIDGE SCHOOL

    www.bridgeschool.org

CALIFORNIA-BASED, Peggy Young (Neil's Wife) founded this school. The Bridge School is an educational program dedicated to ensuring that children with severe speech and physical impairments achieve full participation in their communities through the use of augmentative &

alternative means of communication (AAC) and assistive technology (AT) applications.

Please join us on Saturday November 26 to enjoy the music of one of the world's finest song-writers and to raise money for two great charities.
