  1. The 34th one...according to the Grateful Dead calendar. Wish it was every day ;)

In a small honourary celebration, I went outside and tried to clean up my yard a bit. Unfortunately, I'm only 8-1/2 years behind schedule, so the whole thing's just mud with some sparse clover greenery interspersed throughout the mud. Birds were singing up a storm anyway :)

  2. Well, I don't know what more can be said that hasn't already been said, except that the one distinct difference I felt between this and previous BF&F shows I've seen was that the band seemed to be playing more together as a band than what I see usually, as four individual members doing much soloing and coming together periodically. Not that either way is better, but I believe that their proximity on a smaller stage lead to a tighter interaction. It was a fabulous show, and long enough that I could get in the "hey's" and "hello's" and still catch lots of the show. It's a great feeling to walk into a room of 700-800 people and feel like you know half of them (perhaps not that many, but it sure felt like that at times). A friend of mine had expressed his surprise earlier in the night at my intention of going to the show solo. But much of the beauty of this scene for me is that I might arrive solo (on my own rather relaxed schedule), but feel instantly like I'm in a room full of friends. Thanks to everyone for sharing this vibe...I couldn't think of a more beautiful group of people to share them with :)

Anyway, the one thing I did notice missing from this thread was the setlist, that the lighting tech was so kind as to pass along to me, as follows -

    Bela Fleck & The Flecktones - 04/20/2004

    Club 77, Hamilton

    Next

    Bil Mon

    Scratch

    3/4

    Futch/Bela

    Off the Top

    Poindexter

    Vic/Jeff

    Sleeper

    Heidi

    Sherpa

    Bela

    Moment

Turns out, they fell off the sheet of paper for I believe just the encore which I neglected to get from the light guy.

Thanks again Brian for all your hard work and efforts on this show, and I hope your Earth Day gigs are just as satisfying. Out of curiosity, did you end up having to chase their bus to give Victor back his effects pedals?

BTW nellie, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones are scheduled to play Toronto Jazzfest Wednesday, June 30th and Ottawa Jazzfest both Friday and Saturday, July 2nd and 3rd, 2004 - wow ::

  3. Can't believe it's past 6am and no one's yet posted anything about this grand festive day!?! Perhaps the celebrations started early ;)

Happy 420 to all!! And happy Bela day!! And happy vacation day for me...yippee!! ::

Hope to see all your smiling faces out there later tonight!

  4. For archivist types, the actual dates of The Comfort Zone Spear shows were Friday, July 21st and Saturday, July 22nd, 2000, with DJ Chocolate and Dub Solution supporting both nights. They were smokin' hot shows, though somehow being that HOT really worked on those nights ;) Remember too NR, that was the weekend of the ill-fated Goodforest Festival in Chippewa with ekoostik hookah, Zen Tricksters, and Sultans of Bing up from the states. Seems to me, that's been hookah's only trip to Canada thus far.

But hasn't Spear been up to Toronto since? Seems to me I have some kind of recollection of some festival a couple years later (not counting the Hillside Festival a week later).

  5. Not only that, but every player in the band is phenomenal. He's put together a stellar band whose versatility is beyond comprehension, flowing seamlessly between jazz, world and blues, and fusing it altogether, with Kofi (Hammond and flute), Rico (drums) and Todd (bass). I still haven't quite made up my mind about Mike (vocalist, and newest member) ;)

  6. Forgive my ignorance, but I always thought Hall & Oates kinda sucked! Even when they showed up at the Grateful Dead's final Rainforest Benefit show at MSG in NYC on 9/24/88, I thought there might be a lot of disappointment apparent in the room that night (though hey, they were all there for a good cause). Anyway, to H&O's credit, they did a really sweet "What's Going On" and my opinion of them was mildly transformed ;)

  7. Today the promoter left me a message that the show would have to be at the Opera House afterall since the Mod Club was booked that day. He also said that it wasn't a completely done deal, but seeing as it appears Kimock camp is already trying to get the word out, that's a pretty good indication that the show will happen I think.

Hey Rossolee, I didn't know that was Kimock at the RR Heaven show in '91...guess I've seen Kimock a couple of times afterall :)

  8. Don't know if it pertains to anyone on this board, but it was mentioned on Breakfast Television that there was a website dedicated to bank balances that had been inactive for over 9 years. Maybe someone has a bank account where perhaps union dues or pension were direct deposited back to an account used by the company. All you do is type in your name and province and it gives you any possible matches. Nothing came up for me unfortunately, as I could really use some cash for that upcoming Dead tour onsale, but hey, perhaps someone else will get lucky. Here's the main site -

    www.bank-banque-canada.ca/en

And the page to go directly to the search -

    http://ucbswww.bank-banque-canada.ca/scripts/search_english.asp

    Good luck!

  9. I'm an idiot...I have an NRBQ CD "message for the message", but I must've gotten it within a stack of CD purchases, 'cuz this one seems to have fallen by the wayside (only played a couple of times). Guess this'll be the next one to get heavy rotation in my discman. It appears the album was released in 1994, so I guess this was Al Anderson's final album. He's on it, and several tunes were cowritten by him. Thanks for the heads up Kung (and see ya soon).

  10. Wow, what a night! I'm just now conscious enough to contemplate any action (shouldn't have gone to bed afterall I guess)...too bad Friday night's show isn't starting now.

So, thanks again to everyone that made last night so cool, and especially Pete and Tasha...never have I felt so welcome in anyone's home (well except maybe Velvet's)...you guys rock! At last I was able to partake of one of the legendary P&T Guelph afterparties, and it definitely lived up to its reputation ;)

Lastly, it's been a great week of Slammin' Jack, and I hope it won't be too long before we see both SJ and nero back in the neighbourhood. It was fabulous to see (and hear) everyone ::

  11. For those folks keen on seeing Sound Tribe Sector 9, I just noticed their proximity in the next few days. Rochester's at the Water Street Music Hall tomorrow night, and Detroit's at St Andrew's on Saturday. Don't think I'll be catching either since I think the party's in Guelph on Thursday, and I'll most likely be visiting family on Saturday, but, if anyone does go, be sure to post back and tell us how it was :)

  12. Hey ST - I definitely prefer your experiences to the ones I'm familiar with. The quote I heard about Thursday's Bowie show was that security were like "Nazis". And, as for the sound, first time CSNY came around I called "Carry On" as the opener, but the distortion was so bad at the beginning of the show, it was unrecognizable. Luckily, it did improve as the show progressed. I sat through the entire first set, and when finally they pulled out "Wooden Ships" near the end of the show, I could no longer contain myself. I got up to dance and all the "old folks" behind me yelled at me to sit down, so I tried to get to the area where it appeared the majority of folks were standing and ended up chased around by security through the entire song.

Anyway, perhaps one of these days I'll have a good experience there and my viewpoint will change, but, in the meantime, I'm hoping my friend goes forward with his much talked about class-action suit against ACC security.

BTW, I did enjoy Greendale from the 4th row, but once again one of my friends got the boot.

Okay, gotta get my ass in gear, over to the Slammin' Jack show - what the hell am I still doing here?

  13. ACC security have got to go!!! It's gotta be a pretty amazing show for me to even consider going to that place because of the security bullshit. Where does it say that you're not allowed to dance at a show. I know several people that have been kicked out of that place for dancing...and one of them spent the night in the Don jail (security claiming my friend punched him). The only saving grace is that it's so easy to get back in if you do get kicked out ;)

  14. Yay, I didn't get shutout! Thanks Bouche. Out of curiousity, is it just me or do threads no longer move to the top of the Cavern page when someone has added a comment. If they don't move to the top, how are you to know that they're still active? (Or is it because I have the "let other users know you're online" feature turned off...no offence folks, but if in a fit of insanity I become obsessed with a particular thread, I don't necessarily want everyone to know that I've temporarily gone off the deep end...or do I?) ;)

  15. The TO show is definitely in my grand plan...but, who knows, things do change. Like something Paula Poundstone once said in reference to the reason why she was not married, "hey, I have trouble committing to a movie"...something I can totally relate to...not that that comment relates even remotely to this thread. Wow, delirium has set in once again ;)

  16. The first (and only) time I heard Panic do Cat Steven's "Trouble" I couldn't immediately remember whose song it was, but had a lump in my throat the size of an apple and felt my eyes welling up with tears. I thought, "what the hell is it with this song that is making this happen to me?" and then I remembered that it's played during the final climactic scene in the movie "Harold and Maude" which I've only seen about 25 times and it hits me the same way every time. Whether or not that was WSP's intention in playing that cover (or whether they play it as a tribute to Michael Houser), I'm not sure, but man, talk about emotional.

As for Stella Blue, some may think it blasphemous, but Warren Haynes and Rob Barraco did a very soulful emotional acoustic version at the Terrapin Gathering at Alpine Valley in 2002 that had to be heard to be believed. It was gorgeous.

A couple favourites that I'd like to hear someone do justice to are Stones "Stray Cat Blues" (Beggar's Banquet version), though I have a Johnny Winter version that's pretty smokin', and Who "My Wife".

Still waiting to hear Mule's version of "Since I've Been Loving You" too.

As a sidenote, I remember She Stole My Beer would play a long show filled with great originals and just pull out great b-side obscurities for their encores. Hey, whatever happened to SSMB?

And why does no one ever do some Alvin Lee and good old Ten Years After, like maybe "Once There Was A Time" or "Hard Monkeys", both b-side off "Space In Time", one of the best album sides ever IMHO.
