  1. Can hardly wait!! :: Outside of TM, you might try Sonic Temple for a ticket, or if you're near Kitchener, perhaps Encore Records. As for being smoke-friendly, this venue is not used very often, so likely the promoters will have to hire security, and hopefully they'll pick the same ones as were at the Danforth last time. If not, the side doors of the venue open out to the lake and a patio of sorts, so you may be able to smoke and watch the band simultaneously (I know this was the promoter's hope). And BTW, last I heard, advance ticket sales were very good, so it wouldn't surprise me if it's a sellout, or really close to night of show.

  2. Well, I thought I had to work Saturday night, but now I think I might have it off afterall...but, regardless, cool there's something good to do on Saturday night since it seems some folks are arriving pre-Mule from Buffalo and Ottawa. This way, if we hook up, I'll have somewhere to drag them to :: Nothing worse than being the local hostess and nothing's happening in town (besides John Prine which you definitely need to have a ticket for in advance).

  3. I read an article in the Toronto Star recently about how many speeding tickets appear to be obvious cash grabs, especially when most fines are negotiable. I have to go for yet another speeding ticket on December 3rd, and am hoping the OPP are also negotiable.

BTW ST, unless your insurance company does regular checks, there's a possibility they may not even know about your day in court...just don't bring it up.

  4. Not quite sure how late The Slip played in TO, but I heard Jaydawg tell the bartender at 2am that they would do just one more song...and they did two medium length songs, so I guess the show was over about 2:20...and then kind continuation festivities over at Alexis and Sari's, that the band actually decided to attend. So, it was a fabulous night all round. Wish I could've made it to Hamilton last night, but I had to work, so I'll definitely be seeing you at the Mule ::

  5. Looks like I shouldn't have left after "Fearless", but it was my intent to see both Rich and The Slip, and I thought Rich was supposed to be done by 12:15-12:30 (as per Lee's website). Except for the mix in the room, I thought they sounded great, and I enjoyed them more than Hookah Brown (though I only saw a song or two coming from work that night). Saw you there Timmy, front and centre, but decided not to disturb you only to say hi and bye.

At one point, I saw Garry Lowe walking through the crowd and wondered whether he might not be invited to take over bass so that Rich and Gordie could trade off some leads...didn't happen huh?

Oh and not sure if it was more crowded earlier on, but from my vantage point, the room looked pretty sparse. I was estimating between 150-200 people, but who knows ::

  6. From the current Gov't Mule newsletter -

"MULE TRACK DOWNLOADS TO START WITH 10/15 SHOW

This Friday also marks the beginning of the Mule Tracks live show downloads. Starting with this tour Gov't Mule shows will be made available for download through www.mule.net. So after you see them live, you can download it from the comfort of your own home."

I'm thinking...sweet (now if only I had this capability ::)

  7. And, oh yeah kc, perhaps The Sideshow/Funhouse in Lackawanna - Sideshow's the big room and the Funhouse is the smaller room next door. Plus that new Sphere place, or Club Trinity where Project Object just played. And thanks for the plug zero (wish I was currently a bit more active ::)

  8. Wasn't Diesel Dog's last NYE show in Port Dover, with a rather large pre- and post-show at someone's place (possibly a rental that no one is allowed back to...but that's just the rumour I heard ;))? I ended up at the Fatties show at PJC after I got off work.

This year, I figure October 30th (being the Saturday) will be the big Halloween party celebration date, and it seems the competition is stiff. There's the Fatties/Diesel Dog show in Hamilton, I believe nero in Guelph, and the Charlie Hunter/Logic/Previte show in TO - man, tough choices ::

  9. Regardless of whether the G&M's review of the show or Canned Beats subsequent letter to the editor are correct or well-written, I'd just like to point out that it's really difficult to get national mainstream media to pay any attention to anything jam-related or a show by a relatively new independent promoter, so to this, I would like to offer my congratulations to Marky. And, with this in mind, at this point, positive or negative, a helluva lot more people have now heard of Soulive than would've had Mr. Mark Miller not written a review of the show.

Also, in my experience, and to their credit, The Globe & Mail have been more supportive of anything jam-related than any other of the larger newspapers. I use as examples their 1-1/2 page very insightful feature article about Phish and their surrounding scene from several years ago, their support of Merl Saunders when he came to town, and their pre-show interview with Jorma Kaukonen, along with many others.

  10. He played at The Comfort Zone back in the fall of 2002 - it was one of the only shows that HOB put at the Zone (I'm thinking because the guy has dreads and played at the first (?) Bonnaroo), and he was fabulous. Like zero says, you can definitely see the Ben Harper connection...politically active, folky, percussive, and even often plays that same rare lap steel with the name that escapes me. I would definitely recommend checking him out, but unfortunately I gotta work that night. Oh yeah, Mark Wilson & The Way It Is opened for him that night at the Cozone, so any one of those guys could probably attest to his talent as well.

  11. I really don't want to be the first to post, 'cause I have no idea about the setlist...I know there were a lot of favourites played, but since vinyl became CD, song titles seem to elude me somewhat. Anyway, the band were on fire (no tapers unfortunately), and the horn section was a welcome addition! I'd say the room was a bit echoey - sometimes the distortion in the Opera House can work to your advantage, sometimes not - but all in all, the room was fairly full, so most of it was absorbed. I loved the show, and as I said before, what a treat seeing them north of the border - thanks Marky for bringing these guys our way after such a long time.

The only thing that kinda bothered me was, what's with the 75-minute set, plus encore? God, ya figure they come all this way, why can't they play a bit longer? I'm thinking it's that whole jazz genre thing with 75-minute sets all over the place. I know if I'm going to travel to see a band, and pay good cash, I'd like several hours of music. I know you have no control over the set length Marky and that it's just a contract thing, but I used to bitch to Derek Trucks and his agency about this all the time. As much as I love them, I've pretty much stopped travelling to see them based on the short set I get after travelling a couple hours there and back to see them.

But regardless, it was a fabulous night of music, and the early finish allowed me a chance to get over to the BNB show for a couple songs and some quick hellos, so it was all good ::

And hey, great to meet you TimmyB - hope you had a good show...setlist please? - and Willy and Leanne - great to see your smiling faces!
