  1. Just got home from working overnight and got to read the article. Good read Timmy, very insightful. So, how many albums is this now? Interesting about Alan's solo album release, as I only have Soulive's first three albums and was wondering at the time of the third release whether they were losing their songwriting momentum based on the rearrangements of several previously released tunes...very nicely done though, especially the reworkings with Fred Wesley. Also, out of curiosity, why was their relationship with Blue Note ended?

And Willy, I can hardly wait to get down and funk out (maybe you'll give me a run for my money after all ;)) - see ya there!

  2. Right you are TimmyB...how could I forget? Thanks. Even finally got an aftershow pass for that night, but Soulive were not hanging out in the area given access to the pass holders - just saw Phil, Warren and Rob Barraco (and moe.'s FOH man Steve Young).

  3. For what it's worth, in my opinion, almost all Mule albums take time to grow on you, like a creeper-buzz. Sure, the Deep End albums were instantly likeable, but in the long run, it's the creeper ones I prefer (and the darker, the better ;)). Strangely, I found the same thing with Phish. (BTW, this comes from a person who has yet to hear the new album).

  4. Soulive pre- and post-Phish show parties were July 5th and 6th, 2000 at The Comfort Zone...and what a party they were!! Some folks missed 'em due to the BNB afterparty at Atlantis, which is strange since BNB are once again scheduled to play the same night as Soulive. Soulive were scheduled one other time to play the Lava Lounge on College in Toronto in the spring of 2001 (and the promoter managed to get a small blurb in NOW), but Eric Krasno fell ill and the show didn't happen.

As possibly Soulive's biggest fan north of the border, I'm really excited about seeing them again without having to cross the border. Last time I saw them was at The Showplace in Buffalo during Toronto's SARS scare, and all the familiar American faces took 3 steps backward when they saw me coming - what a trip that was.

See everyone tomorrow night - you don't want to miss this show! ::

  5. From Gov't Mule Newsletter 09/21/04 -

"We have another set of "Deja Voodoo" Midwest, West Coast & Canada tour dates to announce. Gov't Mule will be hitting the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, WI on November 6th before heading out to California for TWO NIGHTS at The Fillmore in San Francisco, CA on November 10th & 11th. The Mule will also head back north of the border for shows in Calgary, Alberta and Vancouver, British Columbia on November 17th and 18th respectively. These shows will be followed by a return to the Pacific Northwest for shows at The Showbox in Seattle, WA on November 19th and at the McDonald Theatre in Eugene, OR on November 20th.

The presales for these seven shows will be taking place this Thursday, September 23rd at 3PM Eastern Time."

Some western folks oughta be happy, but I think it's kind of stupid that they haven't allowed a travel day or a third show somewhere midway for any western Canadians who want to hit both shows. If I'm not mistaken aren't Calgary and Vancouver quite a long drive apart?

  6. It was my roommate and his new band who made their debut last week at the park that brought out the generator. I think he's intending to do it again, but I almost always work Tuesday nights, so I don't have a clue what they sound like or when I'll get a chance to hear them. The band he used to be in, Ontario Hydro, were very cool though, so I have faith that this one is worth checking out too ::

  7. Don't know the logistics of buying equipment from the states, but I just realized that The Tralf was closed during the summer and it appears they're selling all the gear from the club. The list is almost a month old, and maybe most of the equipment went to Sphere across the street, but the club did have great sound, so maybe it's worth looking into if you're in need of some gear. Here's the link to the list -

    See ya soon ::

BTW, Sphere has a couple great shows coming up in October, but they possibly start too early for this chicky ;)

    Galactic - Wed. October 13 @ 8pm

    Donna the Buffalo - Fri. October 15 @ 9pm

  8. Thanks Esau, that's the most news I've heard about Merl since his stroke. And, Merl really liked to tell that story when I hung with him for a couple shows in the fall of 2001. He also told me additional tidbits about playing in Muhommad Ali's band at The Apollo back in the 70s, doing the soundtrack for "Fritz The Cat", being the music director for The Grammys, and one of his relatives being Jamie Fox. Can't remember all he told me, but that article was a good memory refresher, and it's great to hear he's doing so well!!! Keep on keepin' on Merl ::

  9. Possibly meeting a friend from London in Hamilton to carpool to Buffalo for the Brothers on Monday. Can anyone suggest a good spot to meet just off the highway, hopefully somewhere along the QEW, after the London to Hamilton exit onto the QEW, still heading toward Buffalo. It's the wrong direction, but it occurred to me that the parking lot adjacent to PJC might be the easiest, and an obvious choice if anything is happening there on Monday night (since the ABB show will probably be over by 9pm). Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

  10. You know, you're the third person in as many days that's told me that they're going overseas for a year or so...man, this is going to be one lonely year.

On the bright side, I can say I know folks all over the world, and you get to expand your horizons monumentally I expect ::

Anyway, I miss you already, so don't forget to check in and fill us in on every adventure you have ;)

  11. Are there any photos of Jay upright?...upright and passed out perhaps? Well, I guess someone's gotta pick up the slack from the wusses that are absent most of the time (like me). Hope you had a sh!t-kickin' party on your birthday, and it wasn't too much trouble to pick up the slack once again ;) (thanks buddy)

Could it be like Ken Kesey's paid university LSD tests back in the '60s? ;)

  13. Hey Del - Maybe you oughta stay down this way for the week since the guy you rave about Xavier Rudd is at The Horseshoe the following Wednesday (09/29). Don't know anything about him myself, otherwise perhaps I'd rave about him too. But based on your solid good taste and recommendation, it is my intention to definitely check him out (unless of course I can't wrangle the night off work). Sure would be cool to share some frosty ones with ya!!

Oh yeah, and hopefully I'll hit up one or more nero dates while they're in this neck of the woods too ;) (not that I know of anything beyond PJC)

  14. Thanks for providing the setlist dave-O - at least I have a small idea what's going down. And in tribute to those folks that made the long trek to Coventry and were sent home, I made a trip to the Peace Bridge border last night, made a u-turn, got searched at Immigration and came home. Unfortunately, my stupid trek was due to my own dumbass planning. I was on my way to the free Dickey Betts show in Buffalo, and when I went into the Duty Free, I met a dude from Buffalo who was wearing an ABB shirt but had no idea about the Dickey show. I got my printed info and directions out of the car, and realized that the show was ending an hour earlier than I had thought (at 10 rather than 11). Seems by the time I found the place, it would pretty much be over. And since Jimmy T hasn't been doing many shows recently, there was a good chance the shows at either Nietzsche's or McGarrett's weren't worth crossing the border for. Didn't realize it would be so difficult to get back into Canada when I hadn't even left, but I guess my studidity appeared rather suspicious. I sure am having bad luck catching live music this weekend.

  15. Brian, we went in the front door and to the right, where you could also access the patio at the far right. Were they playing in another room behind the front room? Sure would've been great to see some familiar faces and get down to the Dog, while simultaneously giving my friend a glimpse into my world.
