W www.gladstonehotel.com Stephen Franke & Noises From The Tool Shed Songs For A Platinum Blonde Diner Waitress CD REVIEW by Earshot-online.com This loose feeling rock/slack/groove instrumental recording by Stephen Franke & company is a crafty blend of all things boogie woogie: smooth funk, jazz, rock, soul, folk and the blues. The playing on this recording is proficient and it is pretty easy to make comparisons to bands like Phish, the Burt Neilson Band, moe., MMW, Bela Fleck, Dave Hillyard & the Rocksteady 7 and the Jazz Mandolin Project. Some of the songs have vocals and they work out well, but the music on this records is “where it’s at!” - it’s smooth, rhythm driven, flowing and very West-coast B.C.-flavoured Mr. Franke is a trained jazz musician from the music scene in Victoria, BC and his high degree of skill is easily recognizable in his slick lyrical playing style. Franke’s rhythm section the Noises from the Toolshed: Dan Mock (bass), Brent Norman (drums), and Chris Van Sickle (keyboards) are apt at backing up their leader and they all share the floor when it comes to musical high-tailing. There is also additional horn playing peppered all over the recording. This is positive good groove music and it sounds as if it would be best suited to lazy summer outdoor festivals and “happening” good-vibe clubs.
