Jay Funk Dawg
Toronto's Word People are the openers. www.wordpeople.ca An eight-piece band that aspires to redefine hip-hop using unparalleled ingredients; wielding writing and musicianship reminiscent of the glory days of both, Blue Note and Motown Records alike. After winning the “Rhythm of the Future” contest, hosted by 91.5fm the Beat (a CanWest Global subsidiary) in Kitchener, Word People hit the studio to record the songs they have been working and performing live throughout Toronto and surrounding areas. The result is a five song EP, Vol. 1: PLAYONWORDS, signaling the band’s debut on record. The EP shines just as bright as their live show. Word People is an amalgamation of eight individuals stemming from a community of like-minded music enthusiasts. Music that satisfies the mind and body is Word People’s “soul” mission. Each member of this collective adds their specialized piece to the puzzle. Consisting of: emcee - Johann People, vocalist –Lisa People, guitarist - Ben People, bassist - Dave People, drums – Noel People, sax – Nick People, and turntables – DMS People, Word People grooves like your favorite old vinyl keeping the dance floors of today bouncing. Their live performance is laced with the latest cuts off their new album, Vol. 1: PLAYONWORDS, and a few renditions of classics from Marvin Gaye, the Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, and other old school favourites. This show is not to be missed. Word People are innovators, proudly delivering a carefully crafted Canadian Hip Hop niche to an international audience. They are soon to be shining stars in the Canadian celestial map.

zero
Gruvasylum's MC Enlight is really quite gifted, I saw him do a schizophrenic freestyle in two or three voices that was so tight it seemed scripted (which it turns out it wasn't). Brownman of course is one of our best kept secrets and the rhythm section cooks. Word People are highly palatable also, saw them open for Embassy and they were far more interesting. Not sure how these big bands survive though, obviously day jobs.
Jay Funk Dawg
it was a pretty good night... For the most part the crowd was there for Word People, who stole the show in my opinion, tight scripted show. GRUVASYLUM were far more agressive.. still put on a kick ass show.. definitely will be bring the Brownman (likely in one of his different group) and Word People back!thanks y'all! SaggyBalls
my vote for the nick ali electric trio.take away enlight and it's more like that, but enlight is a chill guy, and great at what he does. I've seen both trio and gruvasylum...cruzao is another of nick's groups but it's decidedly more latin...what a hard working musician.
Jay Funk Dawg
I'll probably get the electric trio or Cruzaro next time.. I like Brownman's vibe... hopefully his draw will cross over into the jam world...he certainly is a great improviser and hard working player.
