THE LEAFS MAKE ANOTHER MOVE!

TORONTO (CP) - The Maple Leafs re-signed defenceman-forward Wade Belak on Wednesday while defenceman Aki Berg accepted his one-year qualifying offer.

Belak, 29, recorded one goal, one assist and 109 penalty minutes in 43 games with Toronto in 2003-04. He spent the lockout season with Coventry of the British Elite Ice Hockey League.

The hard-nosed Saskatoon native has played 275 career NHL games for Colorado, Calgary and Toronto with seven goals, 15 assists and 811 penalty minutes.

Berg, 28, had two goals, seven assists and 40 penalty minutes in 79 games with the Leafs in 2003-04. He played 47 games for Timra of the Swedish Elite League last season.

A native of Turku, Finland, Berg has played 531 career NHL games for Los Angeles and Toronto with 15 goals, 62 assists and 318 penalty minutes.

This just in: A bunch of nobodies re-signed with a bunch of teams we don't care about. The dreaded "terms not disclosed" was rampant.

In other news, Bob Gainey is looking for his smile.

The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward Mike Ribeiro and defenceman Mike Komisarek to one-year contracts, as well as goaltender Jaroslav Halak to a 3-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

Joe Thornton signed with Boston. That's a biggie.

Interesting that Thornton and the Bruins settled on a 3 year contract. The Bruins were reportedly looking for a 5 year deal, Thornton reportedly looking for a 1 year deal.

Again, it looks like the promise of next year's "even better free agency period" isn't going to happen. None of the younger player who will be eligible under the new CBA are signing 1 year deals.

The agent for Vincent Lecavalier says he's worked out the parameters one year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning but the two sides continue to hammer away at a long term deal.

Kent Hughes says he expects to resume negotiations with Lightning GM Jay Feaster either today or early next week.

"We really haven't rolled up our sleeves yet on the long-term deal," Hughes tells the St. Petersburg Times. "We kind of talked about certain parameters or terms, but aren't into the nuts and bolts. But we're both committed to working it out."

Lecavalier, a restricted free agent, can become an unrestricted free agent next season under terms of the new collective bargaining agreement because he has been in the league for at least eight seasons. However, the 25 year old has made it clear he wants to sign a long-term deal in Tampa Bay.

Lecavalier was scheduled to make $4.6-million during the lockout season.

According to Hughes, Lecavalier has also offered to give the Lightning a "home team discount" on his services if it means keeping the core of the team intact. That likely includes fellow restricted free agent Martin St. Louis.

"I think Vinny is prepared to take less than what is perhaps fair market value if he wanted to be a free agent next year," Hughes said. "He is prepared to take less to stay in Tampa and try to win one or more additional (Stanley) Cups."
