New Soccer Stadium

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd. plan to become involved in the construction of a soccer-specific stadium at Exhibition Place in Toronto.

''We'd be willing to put in money to make this happen,'' MLSE president Richard Peddie told the Globe and Mail.'' We had been sitting on the fence for some time about a stadium and it was time to get off the fence.''

MLSE owns both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors.

I'll believe it when I see it. How many different spots does that make it now?

I've followed this story closely since the Varsity/York disaster.

I think this one will go through. When Downsview was proposed, Mayor David Miller went nuts. He is anti suburbs and it looks like the municipal government wants the stadium downtown.

They have been trying to build this stadium for 10-15 years, I'll believe it when there are shovels in the ground.

So will I, but they have to build the stadium, and soon. The soccer World Cup is looming.

If they are not digging by January it will not be ready for the 2007 FIFA World Youth Championships.
