Del
A friend of mine bought a new PC yesterday, and he was hoping I could help him get set up with the following:-BitTorrent-shn -> wav converter-flac -> wav converter-an OiNK invitationCan anyone recommend the best free programs for him? Also, can anyone recommend some good sites to download live shows and mp3s? Thanks.
bradm
For BT, I use Azureus. For shn->wav, I use Shorten; I'd also recommend getting and using MD5Sum to verify downloads. (Note that both of those are command-line tools, so if he's not cool with typing commands in a command prompt, they might be tough to use for him.)Most programs that handle FLAC can be downloaded via this website. As well as the main FLAC tools, getting FLAC frontend is a good idea, as it makes using FLAC a lot easier.http://www.etree.org/software.htmlalso has links to other programs which might be useful. As for download sites,http://bt.etree.organdhttp://www.archive.org/details/etreeare the main ones I use.Aloha,Brad Edited September 30, 2006 by Guest

bouche
I would also HIGHLY recommend a bit of software that is not free, but super cheap and worth the money. It's called Total Audio Converter. My favourite part is the fact that it can take out some DRM (digital rights management) from files like Audio Books so you can archive them, or put them on a CD. It works great for every file format except that crazy SHN. I do wish people would dump SHN. It needs a license for software developers and hinders music sharing due to the file format. FLAC is probably the best format to stick to for lossless.
ollie
As stated before, I'm a recent convert from Azureus to uTorrent. Take a look at that one too.
Freeker
Go uTorrent all the way. I just recently switched after years of using ABC and am loving it.Also i recommend http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ for all of your converting need.
