Ottawa residents will pay more next year to ride the bus, park their cars and participate in City of Ottawa recreational activities.

City Council continues deliberations on the 2008 City of Ottawa budget.

OC Transpo users will see a 30% hike in transit fares compounded over the next three years through 2010.

A 7.5% increase in transit fares will take effect on July 1st. Councillors approved a 7.5% hike in 2009 and 2010.

Director of Transit Services Alain Mercier tells CFRA News the fare hike will result in a $1.2 million boost to OC Transpo's budget next year.

OC Transpo ticket prices will increase 10 cents for a one way fare. Cash fares will remain at $3. Mercier says OC Transpo adult passes will increase $8 a month. Senior monthly passes will increase $1.40, while student passes will jump to $62.75 a month.

Parking fares will increase in commercial areas during the evening. The City is extending parking hours at on-street parking meters and increasing the parking rates.

In the New Year, motorists will have to pay meters to park until 9 pm Monday-Saturday. The city will start charging to park on City Streets on Sundays between 8 am and 5:30 pm.

Parking rates will increase to $3 an hour.

Councillors also approved an increase in user fees for adult recreational activities including field and arena rentals. The increase will not apply for children's recreation activities.

Prime time arena rental rates will jump to $210/hour from $165.75/hour. The cost to rent City of Ottawa sports fields will double next summer to $46 dollars an hour.
