I think BradM mentioned this in another thread about Oscar Peterson, but its worth mentioning again because:

A) its free

B) its at Roy Thomson Hall

C) Herbie Hancock will be playing

Unfortunately I can't make it to Toronto this weekend, but those of you close by are in for a treat...(well if you can plug your ears during the Valerie Pringle parts...)

This event will be broadcast LIVE on CBC Radio One and Sirius 137 at 4pm ET.

It will be re-broadcast on CBC Radio Two and SRC Espace Musique at 8pm.

One of the world's best known and influential jazz pianists, Oscar Peterson died at the age of 82 on December 23, 2007. Simply the Best will celebrate Mr. Peterson’s life through performance, memories and film and video highlights of his spectacular career.

Her Excellency Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada will speak on behalf of Canadians who loved the musician. Avid pianist and former Premier of Ontario Bob Rae will also speak and Valerie Pringle will host.

Musicians paying tribute include Hilary Kole, Nancy Wilson, Audrey Morris, Gregory Charles, Measha Brueggergosman with Monty Alexander (piano), Ulf Wakenius (guitar), Dave Young (bass) and Jeff Hamilton (drums). Just announced, Herbie Hancock will also perform. The tribute will conclude with a performance of Peterson's Hymn to Freedom featuring Measha Brueggergosman with the combined forces of the Faith Chorale, the Nathanial Dett Chorale and the University of Toronto Gospel choir all directed by pianist and CBC Radio host Andrew Craig.
