Fire on the Mountain (live)

this is also kind of cool:

Tonight in Athens, 2-9-11, WSP brought back "Fire On The Mountain" with JB doing the extra verses from Robert Hunter's original lyrics, the Fire Rap section.

JB solo & early WP played it like that in 1985.

Widespread Panic, first-time-played: 2-6-86 Athens the first official show with Todd that is celebrated now in 25th anniversary year.

Widespread Panic, last-time-played: 10-2-88 Macon.... until bringing it off the shelf more than 22 years later --- that's a gap of 2,326 shows.

Grateful Dead never played it with the rap. Side projects did. Mickey Hart recorded 2 versions of "Fire On The Mountain" in the early 1970s with Jerry Garcia, Barry Melton, David Freiberg and others. Both have Mickey's 'rap' lyrics. One version is from the Area Code 415 sessions, and one from the sessions for Mickey Hart's unreleased album titled Fire On The Mountain. After 1995 when Jerry passed away, Mickey Hart brought back the Fire rap with The Other Ones at Furthur Fest, and in 2006 with The Rhythm Devils.

Original lyrics are here:

The Fire Rap part (which JB did most of tonight) goes like this:

Wound in barbed wire, hell I ain't sore

Only hurts when I laugh, or roll on the floor

It only hurts a little, at least that's what I'm told

When you drown in hot oil it can even feel cold

Cut up in sections, squirming alive

Lost to the world on that fifty-cent jive

Fireman, fireman, call off your dog

This isn't a blaze, it's just a hog in the log

There's a fire on the mountain, running around

What doesn't go up can never come down

Gonna drink a hot water before I die

It cools me down, I ain't telling no lie

Out of the frying pan and into the fire

Over the rat trap and under the wire

My baby's in scarlet, her shackles in gray

If loves to love she's got it slated away

Put it down heavy, pick it up lean

Got to lay it down dirty and play it back clean
