The Juno nominations are in. An interesting year for Canadian music. Here are some of the major categories that include bands that we discuss on this message board:

JUNO FAN CHOICE AWARD (PRESENTED BY TD)
  • Arcade Fire
  • Bobby Bazini
  • Drake
  • Hedley
  • Leonard Cohen
  • Magic!
  • Michael Bublé
  • Nickelback
  • Serge Fiori
  • You+Me
(Arcade Fire is my favourite on this list, but they didn't really release any new material in 2014, just toured in support of 2013's Reflektor. Leonard Cohen had a strong year. Fuck you Nickelback. Drake continues to be an international superduperstar, so he'll take this category.)

SINGLE OF THE YEAR
  • Hold On, We’re Going Home Drake
  • Crazy for You Hedley
  • Hideaway Kiesza
  • Rude Magic!
  • We’re All in This Together Sam Roberts Band

(I dig Sam Roberts Band, and hope that they take this category, but let's not fool ourselves, Drake's song is a worldwide hit, and despite being released in 2013, continued strong through most of 2014.)

INTERNATIONAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR
  • PRISM Katy Perry
  • Pure Heroine Lorde
  • Midnight Memories One Direction
  • In the Lonely Hour Sam Smith
  • 1989 Taylor Swift

(It comes down to Sam Smith and Taylor Swift. It will probably depend on which artist is willing to attend the Junos in person to receive the award. Under that premise I'll go with Sam Smith.)

ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY MUSIC CANADA)
  • Where I Belong Bobby Bazini
  • Wild Life Hedley
  • Popular Problems Leonard Cohen
  • No Fixed Address Nickelback
  • Serge Fiori Serge Fiori

(No clue. I haven't heard any of these albums. Fuck you Nickelback. Leonard Cohen for the win?)

ARTIST OF THE YEAR
  • Bryan Adams
  • Deadmau5
  • Leonard Cohen
  • Sarah McLachlan
  • The Weeknd

(Is Bryan Adams really still a thing in 2015? Is Sarah McLachlan?? What the hell was the criteria for this category anyways? It can't be relevance. The Weeknd single-handedly reinvigorated strip clubs around the world, so I'll give it to him.)

GROUP OF THE YEAR
  • Arkells
  • Chromeo
  • Mother Mother
  • Nickelback
  • You+Me

(Arkells win it. Fuck you Nickelback.)

BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY FACTOR AND RADIO STARMAKER FUND)
  • Glenn Morrison
  • Jess Moskaluke
  • Kiesza
  • Mac DeMarco
  • Shawn Mendes

(Ok. I'm seriously not recognizing al lot of these nominees so far. Am I out of the loop or is everyone else struggling with these lists as well? Mac DeMarco wins because his album was actually pretty good, and also the only one I heard from this list.)

BREAKTHROUGH GROUP OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY FACTOR AND RADIO STARMAKER FUND)
  • Adventure Club
  • Alvvays
  • Magic!
  • USS
  • Zeds Dead

(Alvvays should win this list hands down IMO. Means they won't win. Magic! are a bunch of stoner white college kids playing pseudo-reggae music, so their reach is greater, so they will win.)

COUNTRY ALBUM OF THE YEAR
  • Lifted Dallas Smith
  • Light Up The Night Jess Moskaluke
  • Caffeine & Big Dreams Kira Isabella
  • MacKenzie Porter Mackenzie Porter
  • Wheels The Road Hammers

(Pass.)

ADULT ALTERNATIVE ALBUM OF THE YEAR
  • Bahamas Is Afie Bahamas
  • Compostela Jenn Grant
  • The Lemon Squeeze Jeremy Fisher
  • Popular Problems Leonard Cohen
  • Sleeping Operator The Barr Brothers

(I assume you all want the Barr Brothers to win, right?)

ALTERNATIVE ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY LONG & MCQUADE)
  • Alvvays Alvvays
  • Shrink Dust Chad VanGaalen
  • July Talk July Talk
  • Animism Tanya Tagaq
  • Hot Dreams Timber Timbre

(Alvvays is a great album. I'm listening to it right now in fact. Great vocals, good pace all the way through, excellent production. Give it to them already!)

POP ALBUM OF THE YEAR
  • Avril Lavigne Avril Lavigne
  • Party For Your Life Down With Webster
  • Little Machines Lights
  • Don’t Kill The Magic Magic!
  • Little Secret Nikki Yanofsky

(It's between Lights and Magic! Fuck you Nickelback. I'll say Magic! wins it.)

ROCK ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY SIRIUSXM CANADA)
  • High Noon Arkells
  • Ghosts Big Wreck
  • Lo-Fantasy Sam Roberts Band
  • The Union The Glorious Sons
  • Between Illness and Migration Your Favorite Enemies

(Big Wreck released an album this year? Interesting, in the sense that I am surprised that they are still around. Sam Roberts Band or the Arkells will win. If I had to pick, I'd say Arkells because they are the hometown boys, and will pop the crowd when they are announced as winners.)

RAP RECORDING OF THE YEAR
  • PA2: The Director’s Cut Marco Polo
  • The Legends League Presents: Naturally Born Strangers Naturally Born Strangers
  • Dear America P Reign
  • Amani Saukrates
  • Stigmata Tre Mission

(No. Clue. We still call it "Rap"??)

DANCE RECORDING OF THE YEAR
  • Calling All Heroes Adventure Club
  • White Women Chromeo
  • Goodbye Glenn Morrison
  • Sound Of A Woman Kiesza
  • Soundwave Trevor Guthrie

(Kiesza because reasons.)

R&B/SOUL RECORDING OF THE YEAR

  • Dirty Laundry Ben Stevenson
  • Got To Have It jacksoul
  • JRDN JRDN
  • Four Seasons Melanie Durrant
  • Often The Weeknd

(The Weeknd by a mile. In terms of mainstream reach Weeknd is killing it.)

ELECTRONIC ALBUM OF THE YEAR
  • Our Love Caribou
  • While (1<2) Deadmau5
  • Right From Real Lydia Ainsworth
  • EX Plastikman
  • Alone For The First Time Ryan Hemsworth

(Caribou *should* win, but I have a terrible feeling that Deadmau5 will win instead, unless the Juno committee shies away from him due to the ongoing lawsuit with Disney.)

[deleted other categories that I had no opinion or anything witty to say about. Fuck you Nickelback.]

The Ottawa Citizen has an article about The Juno Awards' jazz nominees for 2015, including a comment about the "album of year" category from Darcy James Argue, about a Lenny Breau album:

"I mean no disrespect to the memory of the great Lenny Breau, but a live bootleg recorded 30 years ago should not be eligible for Jazz Album of the Year — that’s absurd. The Grammys require nominated records to have been recorded within the previous three years, I believe, and I’d really recommend that the Junos adopt a similar policy. The Breau record could be eligible for a “Best Historic Recording” category if CARAS decides to add one, but including an archival recording in a category designed to honor the best album of the past year does a real disservice to working jazz artists."

Aloha,

Brad

My picks as to who should win, keeping in mind I don't know the criteria.

Fan choice - everyone except Arcade Fire is terrible, so them.

Single - every song is terrible except the Sam Roberts song which isn't great but passable, so it.

International Album - this is a dumb category

Album of the Year - Ugh

Artist of the Year - Ugh

Group of the Year - Arkells should win.  Mother Mother will win (ugh).

Breakthrough Artist - all terrible.

Breakthrough Group - Alvvays should win, but I fear Magic! will win because their song was massive)

Country Album - Ugh

Adult Alternative - Barr Bros should win, Bahamas will win.

Alternative Album - Hot Dreams is a masterpiece that will lose to July Talk because they have hype.  Ugh.

Pop Album - Ugh.

Rock Album - Arkells should win but they probably won't because Junos.

Rap - No idea

Dance - No idea

R&B - No idea

Electronic - Caribou's album is excellent.  Hope it pulls through.
