Blaze guts Centretown home

Firefighters discover marijuana grow operation at separate fire

OTTAWA -- Ottawa firefighters worked all day to contain a blaze at a Centretown house yesterday and, at a later fire on Cambridge Street, discovered a marijuana grow operation.

Firefighters arrived at 116 Cambridge St., where the first floor of the three-storey brick house, divided into apartments, was ablaze.

Sixty marijuana plants were discovered in the basement of the house by fire officials, who said the illegal operation was not connected to the blaze.

Officials say the fire started in a kitchen on the main floor.

Several trucks, with 42 firefighters, arrived about 7:20 a.m. and the fire was contained at 1:45 p.m, fire officials said.

A 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were treated for smoke inhalation at the Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus. The man also received treatment for minor burns to his hands.

Last night, police confirmed charges are pending against a 35-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman who were occupants of an apartment in the house.

"Damage to the building is $200,000, and damage to the contents is $100,000," said Chief David Olmstead.
