Okay, so Good Friday is when Jesus gets put on the cross, right? So right now we're drinking beers and such things in celebration of the torture of one really neat guy? (whether or not you're religious you have to admit that Jesus was probably a pretty cool person)

So why do they call it Good Friday if ,J.C. died hmmmm

With apologies to bradm ... :)

From the earliest times the Christians kept every Friday as a feast day; and the obvious reasons for those usages explain why Easter is the Sunday par excellence, and why the Friday which marks the anniversary of Christ's death came to be called the Great or the Holy or the Good Friday. The origin of the term Good is not clear. Some say it is from "God's Friday" (Gottes Freitag); others maintain that it is from the German Gute Freitag, and not specially English. Sometimes, too, the day was called Long Friday by the Anglo-Saxons; so today in Denmark.
There are two possible origins for the name "Good Friday". The first may have come from the Gallican Church in Gaul (modern-day France and Germany). The name "Gute Freitag" is Germanic in origin and literally means "good" or "holy" Friday. The second possibility is a variation on the name "God's Friday," where the word "good" was used to replace the word "God," which was often viewed as too holy for commoners to speak.

I'm surprised there aren't more gawdy eight feet tall inflatable easter bunnies littering people's lawns here in Chatham. My cousin and I just went on a three hour cruise all within the city limits on the hunt for obscene easter decorations and funny church greeting signs. The best was "Jesus Christ. He paid the price", the same church in the summer has their sign reading "Our church is prayer conditioned". The best inflatable easter bunny prize went to chatham-kent secondary school for their 30 foot high ginormous pink bunny pegged down on the front lawn. All in all, it was good times. Four coffees between the two of us later, and noone won anything. Roll up the rim this time around is bullshit. Whatever happened to the good old days when winning nothing was a surprise?

Happy Easter!
