  2. i despise that campaign. Who the fuck is their target market with those ads? Who thinks that is funny/cool/etc? Here's a take on it and the Koodo service; http://marketnewsblog.blogspot.com/2008/04/koodo-is-new-mentos.html http://mobilesyrup.com/2008/04/09/exclusive-interview-with-kevin-banderk-chief-koodo-officer/
  3. those were the good ol' days Birdy Sadly, the roll up the rim campaign is one of the biggest scams out there right now. I think this year I may even boycott Tim Horton's during it (last year it took us 40 cups to win a fucking cookie!)
  4. wasn't even billed as The Dead. Simply listed all the players' names.

  6. I don't know about Copps Coliseum, but maybe Hamilton Place for a couple of nights, or Massey Hall!
  7. Nice story. The power of music agian. http://www.news-record.com/content/2008/11/17/article/mom_s_b_natural_solace_is_seeing_dead_jammin Mom’s 'B natural’ solace is seeing Dead jammin’ Tuesday, November 18 (updated 7:01 am) By Jeri Rowe Staff Columnist GREENSBORO — Like many ink-stained refugees, I get my share of calls from readers. One of them came from Betty Ruffin. She had a doozie of a request. She wanted me to help her better understand her son. Her request came a few months back. She saw my column on the Marcus C. Rizzo Center for Musician Enrichment, a proposed music incubator on South Elm, and she wanted to make a donation in honor of Tommy, her oldest son. When I asked her why, she told me about Tommy. He had a big heart. He was a Greensboro native, a tax attorney in Florida who thought nothing of helping disabled children, hurricane victims, single mothers he knew and uninsured musicians he didn’t know. In one particular case, after hearing a minister on the radio, he helped poor black families, victims of Hurricane Andrew, get money from insurance companies to rebuild their homes and their lives. Tommy, a single father of two, was named Dade County Citizen of the Year for his work. But he never told anyone in his hometown, including his mom. Betty heard about it from Tommy’s law partners. Tommy was like that. He was an unpretentious, intensely private man who never wanted attention. He wanted to right the wrongs of the world. But at the same time, he was troubled, burdened with depression beyond anyone’s ability to comprehend. Last year, Tommy killed himself. He was 49. But one thing that gave him peace, away from his world he saw restrictive and suffocating, was music. Or “real music,’’ as he called it. And music from The Grateful Dead made his soul sing. He discovered The Dead as an undergrad at UNC-Chapel Hill. Tommy visited every national park and saw every Dead show he could when he covered the country in an old Oldsmobile and a pop-up camper. His musical adventures with The Dead never waned. He saw them constantly. And somewhere along the way, he gave The Dead’s guitarist Jerry Garcia some kind of advice. Maybe tax advice. But like he did with much of his life, he didn’t tell people. They found out about his work with Garcia only after his death, when they found a signed photo in his office. There was a short thank-you from Garcia, written in gold pen, that included this tidbit: “Life’s short. Don’t B flat. B natural.’’ Garcia signed it in the universal language of music notes. After Garcia’s death in 1995, Tommy criss-crossed the country to see the remaining band members of The Dead play and see its community. And every time after every show, he told his mom about it. Even when Betty visited him in Florida, Tommy would put on something from The Dead and say, “Listen to this, Mom, listen to this!’’ But she never saw the band live. And she never fully understood her son’s connection to The Grateful Dead and its legion of deeply loyal fans who searched for what some called “The Happy Sound.’’ Deadheads. Tommy was one. So was I. I had followed The Dead since 1985. Just like Tommy. So, I knew the draw. And with Tommy gone, she asked me for help. She wanted to better understand the why of what Tommy loved. At first, I thought we’d talk over coffee. But when the Greensboro Coliseum Complex booked RatDog, the group fronted by Bob Weir, the former rhythm guitarist of The Grateful Dead, I had a better idea. We’d go. And we did Sunday night. I walked Betty — a 75-year-old woman called BeBe by her grandkids — into War Memorial Auditorium, and there, she saw a mass of 1,500 Deadheads turn one big room into one big dance hall. She got it. At least she told me she did. But she didn’t need to. I saw it for myself Sunday night, when she clapped, swayed and patted the seat in front of her with every tune she recognized. She had heard it all before. Somewhere in her son’s life. But Sunday night, she heard it — and saw it — for herself. And she just grinned.
  8. I stand corrected. I'm still amazed that with the "superstars" they do have that they could skid for this long. There is something very very wrong with the team.
  9. Drive-thrus are ridiculous most of the time. On our way to work (if we're late and haven't made our own fresh ground coffees at home) we'll stop in at Tim's. I park in front, turn off the car, and am back out again with my order and in the car well ahead of where we would have been going through the drive-thru. Bunch of lazy asses who can't get outta their cars
  10. Seriously, i don't know waht they should do. I don't think there's a lack of talent at all. It was easy to lay the blame on the cancerous Emery last year when the slide began. Now? It's gotta be in leadership/coaching. Think about when they consistently started losing on a regular basis. That was right around January 08 wasn't it? It hasn't gotten any better over the off-season and doesn't look any better in the near future.
  11. Both teams need to get outta da funk, but only one can do it. Who's it gonna be? The losing team will most certainly be dealt a cabinet shuffle of sorts!
  12. http://www.nhl.com/ice/standings.htm?type=CON&navid=NAV|STN|Conf Welcome to the basement! When do the firings start? I still don't understand why Murray is still allowed to meddle with that team.
  13. That was my grad quote when i finished high school. LOVE that song.
  14. I think that's it BR. They have totally marketed themselves as a "Canadian Institution". Somehow it's unpatriotic to drink a coffee from anywhere else. I find their coffee is mediocre, but it serves it's purpose. I have been enjoying their Pumpkin Spice Muffins with the candied pumpkin seeds on top. YUM!
  15. Thank you. Shit, that just sent shivers up my spine just reading it. Best of luck on future successes with him. Have you figured out what years he may have attended a lot of shows?? Maybe some live recordings from then, or even a specific show he was at would really trigger something.

    Tintin

Unygenix the fishmonger and his wife Bacteria Cacofonix the local bard. Great names. There were tons of 'em.
  17. Trust me, the CBC is management-heavy. Travel costs for management are massive in this place and a lot of it is not really required. I used to work in one area of the Corp where this was abused ridiculously, IMHO. Could you imagine living in Vancouver, Halifax, Calgary and travelling to Toronto to work a few days EVERY week?! AND you get to keep all you air miles to fly your family down to Florida for vacation? You'd think those air miles would be pooled back into the company to lessen the costs of future airfares (but those who travel, see the points as a perk). UGH. As for funding, more than half of the CBC's funding is raised via Media Sales. So, less than half of my paycheck is provided by you guys (who pay your taxes that is)

    yayyyyyy God

Totally agree with ya. That sounds like a fine way to operate. Only problem I see is that there are always those few that don't agree with the "within reason" and "try" and instantly will cry discrimination. How/where do you draw the line? I was just thinking that in a case where there is a largely diverse population (eg. University classes) that the whole thing just can't STOP because every so often a chunk of the class has to leave. Maybe it should be thought of more along the lines of what supercedes what? Much like other holidays some employees will argue that they should get the day off too, or non-smokers have to work more because they don't take 10 smoke-breaks during the day, why do classes only shut down for Christian and Jewish holidays, etc.

So, I guess it wouldn't be right then to have Muslims who require their 5-times a day prayers function as firefighters, police officers, military, etc? Hold on, I have to put the hose down now to go and pray! All i'm saying is that there are certain jobs/professions where specific religious requirements simply can not be accommodated. Any legislation on this part has to be adjusted accordingly. Based on your "Biggest piece of religion pie" chart, it seems unfair that proceedings at public institutions/workplaces be halted for religious "breaks" during the day only be made for one or two religions and not for all. If it were made for all, then almost nothing would be accomplished.

What? So you were just mad that somebody labelled you "offensive" and not the fact that the event didn't take into consideration one faith's high holiday? You mention earlier the plight of some Muslims that don't like the fact that a University doesn't fit their timetable around their prayer breaks, but it's OK to organize events that don't fit another faith's holidays? Clarify please.
