  1. WOW!!! I totally thought that was a photoshopped image. That is amazing: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/04/070409-crystal-cave.html April 9, 2007—Geologist Juan Manuel García-Ruiz calls it "the Sistine Chapel of crystals," but Superman could call it home. A sort of south-of-the-border Fortress of Solitude, Mexico's Cueva de los Cristales (Cave of Crystals) contains some of the world's largest known natural crystals—translucent beams of gypsum as long as 36 feet (11 meters). How did the crystals reach such superheroic proportions? In the new issue of the journal Geology, García-Ruiz reports that for millennia the crystals thrived in the cave's extremely rare and stable natural environment. Temperatures hovered consistently around a steamy 136 degrees Fahrenheit (58 degrees Celsius), and the cave was filled with mineral-rich water that drove the crystals' growth. Modern-day mining operations exposed the natural wonder by pumping water out of the 30-by-90-foot (10-by-30-meter) cave, which was found in 2000 near the town of Delicias (Chihuahua state map). Now García-Ruiz is advising the mining company to preserve the caves. "There is no other place on the planet," García-Ruiz said, "where the mineral world reveals itself in such beauty." The two brothers who discovered this Cave of Crystals "antechamber" dubbed it the Queen's Eye, because the opening leading to it resembled an eye. The cave is 950 feet (290 meters) underground. The Naica mining complex, which yields lead, zinc, copper, silver, and gold, zigzags nearly half a mile underground (760 meters). Deep inside Naica mountain, the Cave of Crystals is a horseshoe-shaped cavity in limestone rock about 30 feet (10 meters) wide and 90 feet (30 meters) long. Volcanic activity that began about 26 million years ago created Naica mountain and filled it with high-temperature anhydrite gypsum (giant shards of which are pictured above). When magma underneath the mountain cooled and the temperature dropped, the anhydrite began to dissolve. The anhydrite slowly enriched the waters with sulfate and calcium molecules, which for millions of years have been deposited in the caves in the form of huge selenite gypsum crystals. "There is no limit to the size a crystal can reach," geologist Juan Manuel García-Ruiz said. Delicate as glass, the "megacrystals" require great humidity and a temperature of about 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius) to maintain their current form. A special door has been constructed to seal off the Cave of Crystals from the rest of the mining complex, which is ventilated to keep it at a comparatively brisk 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius). Its walls studded with crystal "daggers," the 400-foot-deep (120-meter-deep) Cave of Swords is closer to the surface than the Cave of Crystals. While there are more crystals in the Cave of Swords, they are far smaller, typically about a yard (a meter) long. Their relative compactness is likely due to a rapid temperature decline, as opposed to the far more gradual change that is believed to have encouraged the megacrystals in the deeper cave. Thanks to the 13,200 gallons (55,000 liters) of water pumped out of the mine every minute, the acres surrounding the mountain have been rendered ready for farming—a rarity in Naica mountain's Chihuahuan Desert setting This same epic pumping operation makes it possible for humans to study the Cave of Crystals. If the pumping is stopped, the caves will again be submerged, and the crystals will start growing again. So what happens if—or when—the mine is closed? "Should we continue to pump water to keep the cave available so future generations may admire the crystals?" geologist Juan Manuel García-Ruiz said. "Or should we stop pumping and return the scenario to the natural origin, allowing the crystals to regrow?" —Stefan Lovgren and Ted Chamberlain
  2. Not a bad compilation, IMHO: http://cottonandsand.com/sandandcotton/?p=273
  3. LOL ... sure, sounds good. At this point I don't know if i'll be making the NRPS show. I really want to. However, the night before I'll be collecting my winnings from Ollie and enjoing the Slippermen show (i'll post info here soon). I don't know if i'll get clearance for the second night, but we'll see. NRPS will be a later start anyhow and I may be able to sneak in to town after everyone has gone to bed :)
  4. wipe that smirk of your face Ms Zimmy!
  5. Keep an eye on this page: http://my.execpc.com/~billp61/dates.html#cur You'll find out there first for sure. He's got the best, and most reliable, sources.
  6. I haven't seen a show there yet. As much as I'd like to see Bob again, that's the same weekend as the Grateful Fest ... http://www.casinorama.com/
  7. Who you calling geek? Watchit Soccerboy. I may have to let KungLukeZero loose on you. I'd like to see you survive an 8 mile throw down with him! .
  8. This was probably the last It's going to go under major renovations this year. Most hard core Peach Heads felt this was the true finale and that next year it won't be as likely to happen. New management won't want to give up 3 weeks to ABB when they could charge a TON more for other events. But, you never know ....
  9. Kanada Kev

    bye bye belinda

She'll have more time to hang out with Domi.
  10. That's a great hotel and VERY central! It would be a perfect one for Toronto Jazz Fest. When I booked a room there for a buddy last year it overlooked Nathan Phillips Square where all the action was. Too bad you couldn't open the windows to hear anything .
  11. Haha ... i knew you'd like Baj I got "turned on" to JBT a while back by a guy I know who lives in Melbourne. JBT is HUGE in OZ. He's kinda like The Hip ... you see him outside of OZ and you get to see him in clubs/small venues with a whole bunch of Aussies. Seriously, the last show at Lee's must've been 75% Australian crowd ... good times Too bad he ain't playin' Gratefulfest.
  12. Baj, Come on out to this one and you'll have a good time. Trust me on this one. Check out his album Sunrise Over Sea, and some of the live links that bradm mentioned.
  13. Can't remember if this was posted here yet: Derek Trucks Band Sat 06/30/07 Toronto, ON Downtown Jazz

  15. Buddy, you're not moving to Cornwall are you? Cornwall kinda stinks (at least Cornwall, ON ).
  16. Bet with a knee jerk? You either think that a team is going to win a series or you don't. What's so knee jerkish about that? I simply think that the Pens are going to win. I think that's great that you took the odds at the beginning of the year ... that's truly going out on a limb.
  17. Booche, don't bother ... you're just bitter because your team missed the playoffs! You're a sissy Habs fan and they are confident Sens fans Ollie's got balls (and great taste in understanding the greatness of Gabriel-era Genesis)!
  18. waaa waaa waaa Come on Billy, we're not talking about big money here. You wouldn't say that you have $5 of faith that your team is the shit? It doesn't have to be $$$ ... a couple of shows on CD? Now THAT is funny.
  19. LOL ... since it's the start of the playoffs, we're having a "jersey day" in the sales/marketing dept at the CBC today. One dude just walked by with a Leafs jersey with McCabe on the back. I snickered as he passed ... what a waste of money (McCabe and getting that name on the jersey). I've got a Team Canada jersey on, but have yet to see anyone show up with a Sens one ... there are a number of "fans" here too. Interesting. I get along really well with one of them. Mind you, she's a pretty hot blonde so I can look past some faults William, if you were a "true Sens fan" you'd be offering a wager that they will win this round ... shit, you'd be betting that they will win the Stanley Cup!
  20. Hey William, how could I possibly take over this forum? I'm not trashing the Sens or anything. I was simply inspired by c-towns request for a wager from some of the Sens fans in here. At least Ollie was willing to step up to the plate and represent I love the playoffs! Time for some kick-ass hockey, and most all of the match-ups look like they should be very entertaining.
