    Pepperjacks!

Kev, you know the place well. We've had many good times there for sure. It's been a fast and furious 8 years in the meantime. So many scenes and people have come and gone. Thanks everyone for all the kind words. The Deadhead scene in Hamilton and many who are on this board are the ones who kicked off the PJC odyssey. We had a funk band called Hot Buttered Soul, who are friends of mine, as the first band to start playing there. but No one came to see them. They played every friday night(and are awesome) but it was dead and depressing. And Fever was raging so we had to live in their horrible shadow for a while. (thank god they moved). Some of you may remember when we started a grateful dead night on wednesdays in the 1st(or was it the second) summer we were open. I wanted to throw a grateful dead night and someone I was talking to at the Casbah said Julie from Shady Grove might know a guy who dj's dead shows. I think I might have made a trip up to see her specifically to find out how to get in touch with this Grateful Dead dj Rory (aka Gratefully Deadicated Sound System) Well she hooked me up and we started having a GD night. It was great, we cranked the dead. You could hear if from a few blocks in either direction. There weren't too many off us but enough to make it fun for a little while. Remember Button? Jay Cleary took notice of this night and booked his band there one of these nights. What the hell was their name? This night then caught the eye of show-whore aka flowers aka shane. Who REALLY wanted to book JSB and Grand Theft Bus there. since he was getting no love from the original Casbah owners(not brodie). I think when he saw the space and realized I was a deadhead it was a natural fit. So he booked JSB and GTB as our first successful shows. I had never heard of them and had given up on the jamband scene in general until he introduced me to them and I became an instant fan. Hearing those CTMF shows before they played pjc had me wowed. What a fresh new sound. then the shows happened and hippies were coming out out of the woodwork to see these guys. Everyone danced. It was awesome!!! Then came Nero, Blue Quarter, Raisin Hill, Jomomma, FAT CATS! Deisel Dog. There was old school and new school styles both doing very well. Those first 2 wassabi shows were definitely some of the most epic to ever hit pjc. Then the scene did start to fizzle a bit. Shane moved to Halifax and I was left to do the booking and to get a new sound guy named Doug the Soundguy. He wanted more money then Shane but it became apparent he was worth it. To be honest I kind of thought the end was when Shane left. then Brodie started booking the same jambands we had been booking all this time, it was a bit aggravating a first but it also opened the doors for me to also book styles outside of the jam scene I had become accustomed to. I think Sharon Jones was the tsn turning point in our future. Also as the regional jamband scene fizzled a bit, Brian Carson stepped in and started booking the really big guns on a national/ international level. Codetalkers, NRPS, Truths and Rights, Maria Muldaur, Little Feat!?!?! yeah so then indie rock and funk and electro bands started came into the mix and the rest is history. I could go on, but I got a lot of explaining to do to soo many people. Things will get better. It always gets worse before things get better as you all know. We do still have some good times to come in the next 2 months still. Hope everyone knows that I've saved the last show at PJC for the Fat Cats and Diesel Dog on May 30th. Hope everyone can make it. And thanks again for all the love everyone. My goal is to get through this closing without crying in public so don't mess!!

Face T A master in the art of making people move in his DJ sets, Poirier spin music that flows effortlessly from dancehall, dubstep, global urban beats, electro, soca and much more. He based and masterminded his sets in Montréal at his sold out party « Bounce le Gros » for two years. In the past Poirier has collaborated with MC’s and DJ’s from across the globe, working with NYC’s resident large cats BEANS (Warp) and DJ RUPTURE(Tigerbeat6), as well as Parisian heavy weights TTC (Big Dada), Chicago’s MC ZULU and London’s LOTEK Hi-Fi (Big Dada) amongst others. Poirier has become renowned globally for his bass slammin remixes that continue to further solidify his title as “king of the bounceâ€. He has remixed tracks for UK grime/hip hop sensation LADY SOVEREIGN(Def Jam), BASSNECTAR, POLE, BUCK 65, THE EDITORS, CHAMPION, all to much critical acclaim and garnering him attention from publications such as http://pitchforkmedia.com , The Wire and XLR8R Magazine. In 2005 Poirier decided to throw down his own successful monthly DJ night in Montreal, BOUNCE LE GROS. An evening that featured what Poirier described as “Bass and no attitude“. Poirier’s night of genre Mashing provided enough bass to fill the place, attracting a mixed crowd that appreciate his dirty style, tasty beats and eclectic flare. In 2007-2008 Poirier released the album ‘No Ground Under’ on Ninja Tune. The record was well received by the public and press alike, and as a result he toured in North America and Europe several times. This legend in the making is touring the world extensively playing the underground club circuit. 4. Celebrating the release of Thundereheist's 1st full length album on Big Dada(out Mar. 31st) as well as Exclaim!'s 17th anniversary, this Hamilton stop on the cross Canada tour will no doubt be a night of dirty dance-floor mayhem. pjc and exclaim.ca present THUNDERHEIST(Big Dada/Ninja Tune) http://www.thunderheist.com http://www.myspace.com/thunderheist http://www.bigdada.com/ with special guests: WINTER GLOVES(Paper Bag records/Montreal) http://www.myspace.com/wintergloves http://paperbagrecords.com/ With only a handful of live shows behind them at the beginning of the year, Winter Gloves was already receiving invitations to join dates with bands the likes The D'URBERVILLES, JEALOUS GIRLFRIENDS and TOKYO POLICE CLUB on a series of sold-out tour dates (Montreal, Ottawa, two Toronto shows). Such well-attended shows helped spread what was already becoming the wildfire of their demo tracks across blogs and music chat sites, and lead to top pick coverage at both Canadian Music Week and NXNE this year. Guest DJ's: CARLA COMA MAC & A.A. SATURDAY, APRIL 4TH @ Pepper Jacks 38 King William St., Hamilton http://www.pepperjackcafe.com Tickets: $12 Advance Tickets: $10, available at PJC (when open) or Dr. Disc [20 Wilson St., Hamilton, (905)523-1010] Doors: 9pm, 19+ VIDEO: Thunderheist: Little Booty Girl: Pitchfork TV Exclusive: http://pitchfork.com/tv/#/musicvideo/907-thunderheist-nothing-2-step-2-big-dada Thunderheist: Jerk It: Stealing thunder so you move that ass, the duo dubbed THUNDERHEIST unleashes serious electrocrunk boom bap. Ribcage-rattling bass breaks laced with proper rhyming are flipped with digital booty bass, 80s-inspired electronic pop and slowed down Southern bounce, all fresh-dipped in serious swagger. MC and singer Isis and producer Grahmzilla know how to bring it. And once they’ve brought it, it stays brung. "Toronto's shit-hot electro duo" (NME.com) are already a huge online phenomenon, but this first full taste of their forthcoming album comes courtesy of Nasty Mix Records in Canada. Catchy, propulsive, ecstatic and uncompromising, it’s party music of the highest order, utterly unique but sounding like its been in your head all along. Singles and album will follow from Big Dada, but for now, “let them know you're worth it/ dust it off and jerk it…"
