"Watermelon Slim" is one of the most intriguing bluesmen out there. Watermelon Slim first appeared on the music scene in the early 1970s as the only Vietnam veteran to record a full length LP during the war. In subsequent years, Slim played with a variety of famous blues stars, but only recently has he become a full-time bluesman. Less than six months after leaving his last truck driving job, hauling industrial waste, Slim was making a living as a full-time touring bluesman. The decision was predominantly the result of a nearly fatal heart attack, and the renewed perspective on mortality that followed. Logically, why drive industrial waste around Oklahoma to dispose of when one can drive band mates around the US to play music and entertain? Definitely one of the highlights of last year for me at Pepper Jack's. This "arkestra" exceeded the hype at their Hamilton show. The Guelph Jazz fest has now caught on and is sponsoring their Toronto Lula Lounge show as well as their 2 appearances at this years Guelph Jazz Fest. There will be 14 of them this time. It was pretty casual. Only about 20 of us. Some danced, most hung on the patio. It was nice.

Rory has done quite well for himself as far as getting flown all over the continent to play his shows. KOUSHIK(dj set, with some live PA) http://www.stonesthrow.com/koushik/ Koushik specializes in making that hazy, hip-hop-based downbeat sh*t that you could easily compare to contemporaries such as Four Tet (who released Koushik's first single on his Text label), RJD2, and DJ Shadow. What sets Koushik apart from the others is a beautiful '60s psych-pop element that tends to pervade throughout. It shows itself in the spacious panned strings, acoustic guitars, and harpsichords that fall in and out of each other; and the beats have a harder regimented classic true school hip-hop sound, that Fourtet and Prefuse tend to stray away from. But what I truly love about this record is Koushik's voice. His singing is soft and mixed way down in the center of the track, sounding like the voice choirs you'd hear on one of those old Percy Faith or 101 Guitars from the late-'60s.
