Mary and Rob met while Mary was completing a music degree in bassoon performance at Western Michigan University and Rob was working in visual art, teaching lithography and etching at a New York art school. Both were performing as solo musicians at the time, Mary as Transformation Surprise, and Rob as the Urxed After becoming fast friends, Mary relocated to New York from Michigan in late spring 2006, and the two soon after began collaborating under the name High Places in May of 2006. The name refers to a place where one has a better vantage point and can gain broader perspective; it references a love for mountains, rooftops, and of course metaphorical "high places." High Places' songs contain a fascinating range of aural layers: bells and bird calls over a wash of ocean waves; mallets hitting mixing bowls over treated guitar and glockenspiel; Mary's reflective vocals over Rob's homemade beats. The result is an imaginative and spacious amalgamation of sounds with a unique, almost Caribbean undertone that is as immediate as it is refreshing. They played their first show in may of 2006 in North Adams MA, with Japanther, after Rob, who was scheduled to play solo, didn't want to perform alone. They wrote the set in three days. A few weeks later they finished a six song demo CD-R, and left for their first US tour. They began by releasing a number of singles as well as contributing songs to a few compilations. In the Summer of 2008, They duo signed with Chicago label Thrill Jockey Records. The early singles and varied works were collected and released in July of 2008 as 03/07-09/07, and their debut S/T full length followed in September of 2008. High Places tours almost constantly, and have toured with such notable bands; Deerhunter, No Age, Abe Vigoda, Ponytail, Soft Circle, Lucky Dragons and Hawnay Troof.

Last night was awesome, Did anyone on here show? 2 drummers, often 3 8 vocalists. Sometimes gospel sounding, sometimes they sound like native indian war chants. lots of percussion. Sometimes Frank Zappa-esque back-ground vocals. Lots of fun and lots going on.

The jarring shift of such a transition seemed to peek through every chance it could, a constant inspiration as much as frustration that was drafted in the band's self-released EP of mainly demo tracks. With only a handful of live shows behind them at the beginning of the year, Winter Gloves was already receiving invitations to join dates with bands the likes The D'Urbervilles, Jealous Girlfriends and Tokyo Police Club on a series of sold-out tour dates (Montreal, Ottawa, two Toronto shows). Such well-attended shows helped spread what was already becoming the wildfire of their demo tracks across blogs and music chat sites, and lead to top pick coverage at both Canadian Music Week and NXNE this year. If you attended any of these earlier shows, you may have caught (literally) a copy of the Winter Gloves' EP as dozens were thrown offstage during their set. If not, you can grab your own copy of the Let Me Drive EP (injury-free), now available through iTunes on Paper Bag Digital . Paper Bag Records will be behind the release of Winter Gloves' full length debut, about a girl, which will pick up where these song sketches left off. The album was recorded in Toronto during the Winter of 2008 with Producer Jon Drew (Tokyo Police Club, F*cked Up) and is set to drop in Canada on September 9, 2008. That's alright, I'm not toooo bothered. The 2 wigger dudes stayed on the patio mostly. They at least weren't sketchy violent, more sketchy annoying and talking all wigga to a bunch of hippies. The arm of the couch broke off from someone standing(or jumping) on it. the couch was a cheap ikea model. It was just a pain in the ass at the begining of that night.

Naturally, then, emerging grassroots acclaim for the sextet's lingering, literate debut, Forest of Tears, has been fostered by the support of such homegrown indie-rock pillars as Fucked Up auteur Rick White. Who are these people? One Hundred Dollars was born less than two years ago when untested singer/lyricist Simone Schmidt serenaded Ian Russell – formerly of Jon Rae and the River – with an original composition over the phone. They started writing songs together and doing shows as a duo and then as a trio with ace pedal-steel player Stew Crookes and quietly issued an EP titled Hold It Together last year.
