Anastasio Gets Busy In The Studio

Following the dissolution of Phish, former guitarist Trey Anastasio has begun rolling tape on his next solo album. Late last month at his Barn studio in Vermont, the artist was joined by King Crimson/Peter Gabriel bassist Tony Levin, drummer Jerry Marotta and keyboardist Ray Paczkowski on select tracks, as well as Phish rhythm section Jon Fishman and Mike Gordon and Anastasio solo band trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick.

The as-yet-untitled set comes on the heels of April's instrumental collection "Seis de Mayo," which reached No. 18 on Billboard's Top Internet Albums chart. Anastasio's self-titled solo debut was released in 2002.

According to his official Web site, the artist will also guest on a track earmarked for jazz legend Herbie Hancock's next studio album. Hartswick was on hand for that session, as were bassist John Patitucci, drummer Steve Jordan and percussionist Cyro Baptista.

In other news, highlights of the Anastasio band's September appearance at the Austin City Limits festival will be broadcast Jan. 15 on PBS.

  4. Nice job with the review PalacePrincess!

Also you were very close to the setlist, you had all the right songs in there just a couple of them were in the wrong order. You did better with your memory than the official Beastie boys webstie www.beastieboys.com on the tour page! James B the guy that posted obviously just took the setlist sheet and the Boys changed it or he wasn't listening.

    Here's the correct setlist:

    Beastie Boys @ ACC 11/08/04

(Start time 9:17PM Mixmaster Mike Introduction)

    1. The Move

    7. Super Disco Breakin'

    8. Skills To Pay The Bills

    9. Shake Your Rump

    10. MMM (Mike had four girl dancers come out and break dance. The girls looked like to me to be apart of the Toronto Raptor Dance Pack. At which time the Beastie Boys do a costume change into pale blue suits the stage rotates and they perform instruments. Time 9:53PM)

    11. Sabrosa

    12. Ricky's Theme

    13. Something's Got To Give (End band set 10:05PM MMM rolls back out. The Beastie Boys do another costume change. The Boys return at 10:08PM)

    25. Sabotage

End Time 10:56PM (Total Time 1 hour and 39 minutes)

  5. I Believe In You (love for God, not woman)

Whether Bob Dylan wrote the song "I Believe In You" about the love for God or a woman has been up for debate ever since the song was recorded.

Here is what the liner notes in Bob Dylan's box set "Biograph" says about the song.

    I BELIEVE IN YOU

    Recorded in Muscel Shoals 5/79

A beautifully crafted track, from the "Slow Train Coming" sessions, "I Believe In You" is an ode to commitment. One can only imagine the studio atmosphere on the Muscle Shoals evening when Dylan recorded this powerful vocal performance. It's one of his most intimate and best. Many would later conjecture about the object of his feelings. Was it a higher being? A woman? A child? Did it really matter?

First performed in public on Saturday Night Live in October 1979, the song would hover close to the top of Dylan's subsequent concert performances.

Damn, I would love to get this song live just once! Though the odds are against me as Bob currently only performs it a handful of times each year.

    Phish Members Get Busy

Post-breakup, Anastasio, Gordon and McConnell are all booked

Two months after disbanding, the former members of Phish are getting busy. In October, ex-frontman Trey Anastasio returned to his Vermont studio, the Barn, to work on a pair of projects. Spending the bulk of the month writing material for an upcoming solo album, the guitarist invited along several collaborators -- new and old.

Anastasio first spent time jamming with jazz pianist Herbie Hancock for a cut on the fusion legend's forthcoming record. The date also included bassist John Patitucci (Chick Corea), veteran drummer Steve Jordan (Blues Brothers, Keith Richards), percussionist Cyro Baptista (Trey Anastasio Band, Beat the Donkey) and trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band). Several brief Hancock/Anastasio duets have been posted to TreyAnastasio.com.

During the final week of October, Anastasio also recorded solo tracks with bassist Tony Levin (King Crimson), drummer Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel) and keyboardist Ray Packowski (Trey Anastasio Band). Several of Anastasio's regular partners -- including Hartswick, ex-Phish bassist Mike Gordon and drummer Jon Fishman -- rounded out the sessions. No release date has been set. In addition, a Trey Anastasio Band taping of Austin City Limits, recorded in September, will air nationwide on January 15th.

After producing and playing on Bane, the surreal debut of quasi-fictional bassist Joey Arkenstat, Gordon will return to both the studio and the road in December. First, the bassist will reconvene with avant-folk guitar legend Leo Kottke to begin recording a follow-up to 2002's Clone. Shortly thereafter, he will join drummer Joe Russo and keyboardist Marco Benevento for a quartet of holiday shows as the "Benevento/Russo Duo featuring Mike Gordon," culminating in a New Year's performance at New York's B.B. King's. Gordon will soon launch MikeGordon.com to keep track of his solo activities.

Meanwhile, on November 30th, ex-Phish keyboardist Page McConnell will release Vida Blue and the Spam Allstars -- Live at the Fillmore, a DVD of a June 2004 performance with his Afro-funk band. Apparently, life after Phish sometimes involves more than music: the bonus disc will include a forty-minute documentary on McConnell's "foray into the world of demolition derby and car racing."

    What's yours?

  8. What? No Pixies Tim?

That's the only big show that I'm going to. I could go to moe. tomorrow, but I remain indifferent to them - and I've seen them twice.

I am up in the air about the Pixies, I still might go.

As for moe. what two moe. shows have you seen? I'm curious as one was as the opener for Phil Lesh & Friends in 2002 it was not a great gig to represent moe.

Here's a post from www.moerons.com where a person had a thread called "Best Tour Ever-they are on Fire!"

"This has been the best tour in the history of Moe. I've been catching shows since '97, and it's always been incredible. I've never had a "bad" Moe. show. I've done every show from this tour that's on archive, and caught the D.C show(which rocked-one of my favorite of all time), I can't believe how well they are playing. The new songs are insane, they really are running on all cylinders. The best part is that it is only going to keep getting better. We are all so blessed to be around for this stage in their development."

Also maybe my interview with Chuck Garvey will convince you to come see moe. at the Opera House.

  9. Hey Shain,

I too do not have any gossip about what's happening in the Hammer. I hope all is well across the Atlantic.

As for what's going on it's a busy week. I'll be going to the Beastie Boys 11/8, moe. 11/9, R.E.M. 11/10 and maybe Bob Dylan 11/13.

Later I'll be seeing The Musical Box 11/20, Gordon Lightfoot 11/28, Benevento/Russo Duo 12/3-4, MMW 12/4, Wilco/The Flaming Lips 12/31 and Benevento/Russo Duo with Mike Gordon 12/31.

It's going to be a fun couple of months. What other shows are you going to be seeing?

    Take it easy, Tim

  10. This thread has really shown me my ignorance. All this time, I thought Jesus was Jewish, and would have followed the Old Testament, and that he based his teachings on that. (Maybe he wasn't very religious; more of a non-practicing Jew?)

Of coarse Jesus Christ was Jewish and he followed the teachings of the Old Testament. But Jesus also changed things. Jesus changed the laws of the Old Testament as hamilton noted above.

    From Matthew 5:43-48

    Love for Enemies

43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor (from Lev. 19:18) and hate your enemy.' 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward do you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

    Amen.

  12. whats better about the 'new' testiment...

wouldn't the old one be 'more true'???

    hiiiidunno

The New Testament starts with the birth of Jesus Christ. The Old Testament is what leads up to Christs birth.

IMO Christians should follow Christs teaching in the Gospels which are found in the New Testament.
