  1. Totally agreed Jaimoe.

When I was a kid we had the mornings off from school in New Brunswick, and nobody I know went to any ceremonies.

Today I asked my students about it and every single one of them had an assembly at school.

    That's way better.

  2. Just got back from the ceremony at the War Memorial. It was very well done this year, the choir was great. First time I remember seeing helicopters in the fly-by.

I was surprised how many I saw texting during the ceremony but there ya go.

I always think of my grandfather when I'm there. The war needed cooks too.

  3. Good to see you last night Mr. M, thanks very much for coming.

So I guess we don't suck too bad as our engagement was extended for four more weeks. I'll be away for one of those so Doug will take that one solo, but the two of us will be there on:

    Nov. 15

    Nov. 29

    Dec. 6

    Dec. 13

  4. With U.S. Thanksgiving approaching, some Detroit Lions fans are telling Nickelback to stuff it.

A petition is circulating online to prevent the Canadian rock group from performing at halftime of Detroit's Nov. 24 holiday showdown against the Green Bay Packers.

The letter slams the Lions for choosing "such an awful band" to perform and poses the question: "Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?!"

As of late afternoon on Thursday the petition had more than 6,500 signatures, a number that was multiplying rapidly as the story spread to news outlets around the world.

Many signatures simply decried Nickelback as the "worst band ever," while others pointed to the long musical history of the city that spawned Motown, Bob Seger and Eminem.

"Haven't the good people of Detroit been through enough?" read one comment.

It's actually the second time in recent months that a potential Nickelback performance has elicited an outcry from sports fans.

In August, two Winnipeg Free Press critics penned an open letter to the NHL requesting that Nickelback be excluded from the splashy ceremony surrounding the return of the city's Jets franchise.

Long a popular target for derision, Nickelback has nonetheless sold nearly 50 million albums worldwide and scooped up 12 Juno Awards.

The Hanna, Alta., rockers, now based in Vancouver, are scheduled to release their seventh studio album, Here and Now, on Nov. 21.

  5. The lead guitarist for the heavy metal band GWAR was found dead Thursday on its tour bus following a concert in Minneapolis, the band's manager and record label said.

Manager Jack Flanagan and record label Metal Blade said Cory Smoot's body was discovered Thursday before the bus crossed into Canada on the Richmond, Va.-based band's tour.

It's unclear what caused Smoot's death or how old he was. A person who answered the phone at the Smoot family residence in Richmond declined to comment. Flanagan and Metal Blade's Kelli Malella, vice-president of publicity, said they had no further information to release about Smoot.

Smoot performed since 2002 under the name "Flattus Maximus" with the band known for its comically grotesque sci-fi/fantasy-based costumes, stage antics and vulgar lyrics. He produced GWAR's last two albums.

Lead singer Dave Brockie, also known as "Oderus Urungus," called Smoot "one of the most talented guitar players in metal today" and added "at this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother."

Flanagan says there's no word yet on funeral arrangements.

GWAR's tour is scheduled to stop in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta, on Friday and Saturday. A publicist confirmed overnight that despite Smoot's death, the band's Friday night show in Edmonton will proceed.

  7. Safe mode is freaky.

I deleted the scan history and ran AVG in safe mode. It found a virus that it hadn't found previously.

I'm doing another scan right now and will have to experiment with other suggested solutions later.

Gotta practise my G chord for tonight.

  8. Thanks very much folks. I'm going to start trying your suggestions one at a time.

I'm sure many of your suggestions will involve restarting and I will pay close attention at that time to see what my OS is.

Sloth: kind offer though I'm still weighing the payment options.

Seriously though, a friend at work said he would take a look at it on Thursday. I'll bring it to him then, hopefully everything will already be fixed from your suggestions, but if there's still a ghost in the machine I'll start working on your cellphone appreciation song Monday.

Thanks again. If this works I may change my name to:

    iTod

  9. Hey all,

Doug (from the recently defunct John Henrys) and I have taken over Tuesday nights at Irene's while Steve Marriner is on tour with Monkeyjunk.

We have three weeks left: tonight, next Tuesday and the one after that. It's just the two of us; the setlist centers on old country and stuff that sounds like old country. Gram Parsons, Merle Haggard, Steve Earle, John Prine, Flaming Lips, and lots and lots of guitar solos.

Music runs around 9:30 to about midnight, no cover.
