My buddies in Charlemagne just rang, said the dude from Cuff is rocking a sweet-looking pedal steel. I think I'm going to head down there now.

This is really interesting especially as I don't know a thing about this group. Fuck the things you pick up on this board.
Download the show and soon you WILL know a thing or two about them! Musically, that is...my goodness, what a band.

Noticed yesterday that a Dave Lauzon show was the "Curator's Pick" on the Live Music Archive. It's not on the Archive.org front page anymore, but it's listed in the short list of staff picks, which also include Ryan Adams and Antibalas.

Yes sir, they were certainly on a bill with Zygote at one point. I saw them at Lee's during NxNE too, but I think the last time I saw them was at Yonge/Dundas during Toronto Streetfest, must have been Summer 2003.
Booch: I know Derek has had an on/off with Holy Fuck, I think maybe he fills in on the kit (or used to) when they need somebody. I know he is playing/has played drums with Hugh Dillon's Redemption Choir (singer from the Headstones), and has been gigging all over the place, doing sessions too. And yes, Roman Tome was/is a killer, killer percussionist. Great voice too. Funny you should mention that, because Vanderpark has reminded me of Grindig at times, though you guys stretch it out a bit more.
I couldn't find a picture of the drummer, Stefan Szezniak, but it's worth noting that he was also awesome. He still plays around Toronto. I remember as Grindig was disolving, he told me he had flown down south to play a track on the G-Love album that was being done at the time.

I listened to the whole show last night, what a killer fucking set. Almost every song is deadly. Please to download.

Yeah yeah, Willy...this show has more to do with a defunct awesome band than the brief cameo that I make.
And the link being no good...I can't explain that. Looks like the whole domain is down. Should be up again soon, I hope.

A few years ago I followed around a ridiculously good band in Toronto called Grindig (pronounced grin-dig). They unfortunately fizzled out but for about a year or so, they were extremely popular in Toronto. They released a solid record, and their live show was killer. Shit-hot players, the best indie pop songwriting I've ever heard without sacrificing the rock element. I saw them 25 times in the span of about a year before they stopped playing. Saw them all over Ontario.
So a friend of mine has just unearthed a recording of a Grindig show at Healey's on February 15, 2003. I remember the night well. They packed the joint to the rafters and played forever. I was up front and probably more loaded than I had ever been. Then came the encore and they busted into the Hendrix tune Who Knows...and the singer, Derek, leans into the crowd, grabs me by the arm and straps his Telecaster onto me. I was a huge fan and knew the guys and they knew me, but we weren't really friends and had never played together...I was 19 and drunk as shit and didn't know what was going on...I remember leaning over to him and asking what key we were in and he said "D FLAT!" and we were away. What can I say...the recording doesn't lie. There are good bits and then there are...interesting bits.
But forget about that, the rest of the show is INCREDIBLE and really the only testament to one of my favourite bands ever, one that disolved far too soon.

fanatastic lineup
Absolutely man. I'm just pumped to play with Don Vail. I saw them on the Jon-Rae/Constantines bill at the Underground a while ago and thought they were wicked cool. Indie math-rock with interesting songwriting. They're now comprised of three quarters of Chore, and of course Bill Priddle frmrly of Treble Charger.
But holy shit, the Casbah and Corktown lineups are especially good. I'd have a blast at either of those if I wasn't playing.

Felt damn good to play last night...we're on something of a roll, you might say.

I also quite enjoy this record. I spin it regularly on my show. Hell, I wrote the bio on the WTTS website.
I tell you, though; when I first got my hands on a pre-release copy months ago, I thought it was cool but it didn't immediately grab me. Then again, it was an early mix and the tracks weren't split up the same way they are on the release copy. Then I wrote a piece on the band and hauled out the disc and gave it a listen again, and it really started to grow on me. Those tunes fresh in my brain, I did all three shows on the CD release weekend to research for writing the bio, and man did it hit me once I saw it live. I left the last show, new disc in hand and now it makes perfect sense to me. "Monsoon" is an incredibly powerful tune.
But Deeps already knows I love him and his cronies, dontcha?

I would have just been appalled. If I was your drummer, I would have been a Paul.

Pepper Jack's has MARACATU NUNCA ANTES, "the highly anticipated return of the sensational, multi-member Brazilian percussion ensemble". $10, band at 11pm. http://www.nuncaantes.ca
For me it's a toss-up between that and The Underground, which has:
JON EPWORTH AND THE IMPROVEMENTS (Halifax)

THE INFLATION KILLS

*we're rocking new tunes*
TELL THE DIVERS

Now there's a fucking lineup of rock and roll. Hamilton is on fucking fire these days, kids.

Good old Ric Taylor...a wicked-cool guy.
-
-
Played on a bill with them at Casbah not too long ago. Nice guys.
-
Hahaha yes!
I mean, as far as I can tell, it ain't that difficult to play, I don't know what these people are talking about. You hold down the button with the name of the chord you want and strum, the magic of felt does the rest for you.
That said, Tim Bovaconti is awesome at everything I've seen him do, so that gal should give him a call.
-
Haha
We've never used that autoharp with the band, but figured it'd be a handy prop for the photo. The suitcase that Mike is holding is his Value Village special pedal carrying case.
And yes, Guelph. We would love to come play there. Mayhaps on a bill with WTTS?
Hey, this is gonna be a good show. Look for us in the Hamilton Music Notes in this week's View, and we'll be on Ric Taylor's show on CFMU Friday afternoon, sometime between 5 and 6pm. http://cfmu.mcmaster.ca to listen.

Bump for our awesome new picture and a show that is sure to be awesome.
Only fie dolla!

holds 200 or so
That's exactly what I was looking for, should have specified. Thank you sir.
-
Not sure.
Scottie, when you say the Salt Lounge is big...how big we talkin?
-
Are Rum Runners and Tequila Rose the same room, or just attached? Any opinions on one vs. the other?
-
These guys put on a ridiculous show...it's all intrumental and 100% verb-dripping surf. Saw them at the Horseshoe a couple years ago, they were awesome.
They're back at the Horseshoe on Wednesday, Oct 25. I have a gig and can't make it, which is a bummer, but thought some others might be interested.

I missed locking the front door one night - ONE NIGHT - about a year and a half ago, and woke up in the morning missing three guitars, my roommate's very expensive mountain bike, and a bunch of other shit.
It's fucked up to think that some low-life was walking around trying doors and got lucky. My door is always locked since then.
(Didn't stop the burglers from climbing in the window at my new house...oh, Hamilton).
CUFF THE DUKE, TORNGAT, CHARLEMAGNE, Oct 13 -- Casbah

It was awesome. Lots of people out last night. First of all, Charlemagne busted out a couple new tunes that were monstrous in a Constantines-but-more-melodic kind of way.
Torngat was cool and interesting, though I was in the mood for Cuff as I had a midterm to wake up for this morning. They were great though, and had a great crowd watching them. The horn player wandered through the crowd at one point during the set, it was cool.
Then, Cuff the Duke owned me. Songwriting - awesome. Instrumentation - awesome. They have this multi-instrumentalist guy with them now who was playing a keyboard, a Moog and vibes (!). The guitar player only sat down at the steel for two tunes, despite my constant hollering for him to "play more of that steel!", but when he played it, it was outstanding. Picked his brain afterwards and he tells me he runs both his guitar and the steel through the same amp, something I've been having a lot of trouble with myself. They just don't have the room to bring two amps along, he told me (though apparently they make room for the vibes...)
Anyway. A killer show. Great crowd. Didn't even mind that I rolled in at 2am. Just wrote my midterm in Popular Music Post-WWII. I can't imagine I got a single question wrong.
