Just spoke to a friend who called the venue. The advance tickets are sold out, and there are 100 they'll be releasing at door time (7pm). Trying to debate whether I should hop in the car and catch this.

Dude
Fat Cats and Cities in Dust? That's going to make for an interesting clash of fanbase. Both great bands, but I don't know...
-
I am all about a couger over here.
-
Hahahaha
The cat is out of the bag.
I am the proudest new proponent of The Hetfieldâ„¢ style of facial hair.
Can't say for sure how long it will last, but shit, I gotta play at least one gig on the pedal steel while rockin the dirtiest of dirty south face carpets. That'll be tonight. Maybe a few more, if I have the stomach and find that people are still taking me seriously.
For those unfamiliar, I suppose it's a style that falls somewhere between the Friendly Mutton Chops and the Franz Josef:

Thanks Dave, that'd be sweet.
Shite, I figured I'd better post here cause I just figured out that admission tomorrow night is $10 for Mac students, $15 if you're not. Just to be clear.
-
Tried to hit it a bit earlier this week
By my watch I still got 26 minutes. Rockin some Skynyrd in honour of my newfound Hetfield facial hair. Rock.

Right on Marc, we'd be glad to see you.
I imagine the merch will be priced to sell that night.

The Sari
The Quarters show starts at 6pm sharp. There are nine bands and we're playing third. Our scheduled set time is from 7:20 to 7:50pm, and they're being intense about insisting that we stick to the schedule.
There will be a couple really quick speakers in between bands (just during the 10-minute changeover), talking about the causes they're raising money for:
Liz Weaver on behalf of Hamilton Round Table for Poverty Reduction [http://www.blackboxfire.com/fight/povertyReduction.php]'>http://www.blackboxfire.com/fight/povertyReduction.php]
Sarah Knowles on behalf of Howard Hospital in Zimbabwe [http://www.blackboxfire.com/fight/howardHospital.php]'>http://www.blackboxfire.com/fight/howardHospital.php]
Here's the website with all the other info, including other bands (though the site was down a short time ago, but it's back up): http://www.blackboxfire.com/fight

The Surly Young Bucks are on the bill both for Thurs the 17th in London and Thurs the 30th in Hamilton. Looking forward to rocking, y'all.
-
They def. remind me of the Band and I would say are the Band of our time.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves there, dear. A cool Toronto band with a Band-like, Americana-informed sound, but harder rocking, and heavy communal-gospel influence when it comes to vocals and attitude. That's as far as I'll go. Great band, though, for sure.
I suspect they'll be easier to catch in the near future than Burt Neilson, though.

I remember thinking something similar, but last week things were a little different. There is another new guy in the band, a seriously shaggy-bearded hippy-type fellow who plays an old-school moog-like synth on his lap. He sings too. I found that a lot of times they would all back off the mics and sing together, especially at the end of a tune. It was cool. I hear what you're saying with the chick being loud, though.
-
It's really too bad these guys are playing Toronto on the night BNB is doing their reunion...
I think the error was the latter's...the Jon-Rae tour has been booked for a long time. You're right, it is too bad, because I think these bands would share fans. I saw them in Hamilton last week and they were awesome, for what it's worth. They have a new drummer since the last time I saw them, he makes all the difference. Great songs with singalongs, and plenty of rocking.

This is a real shame.
I both volunteer as a host and am employed part-time at CFMU at McMaster. I don't know much about the SOCAN process, but I do know that we don't pay a royalty for most of what we play. About every two months or so, SOCAN monitors about three days worth of broadcast, and we pay the royalties on that chunk of time. I guess that's the break they give us as a non-commercial radio station; it's my understanding that the process is the same for other campus stations.
"If you are adopting a new business operation that uses copyright, then you have to pay for it. College radio traditionally does not want to pay or wants to pay as little as possible for these rights."So for them to introduce a blanket fee for online broadcast, if the above is correct, seems a little extraneous. Campus stations, by and large, don't have massive sponsorships and other avenues of income that commercial stations have. I know that CFMU is run on a very modest budget provided by the McMaster Students Union, who owns the station, and we execute a fundraising drive every spring where we shoot for around $20,000. That extra money is intergral to our operation. We're not talking about taking money from stations that would be otherwise spending it on lavish things or whatever; we're talking about a network of low-budget operations.
The way I see it, why impose this exorbidant fee that most campus stations won't be able to afford, instead of simply adding to the fee paid every couple months on the small chunk of time? I.e. if a certain amount is already being paid in royalties every couple months, why not simply charge a slightly higher royalty for the fact that the music is also being broadcast on the internet? SOCAN isn't helping artists by imposing an unreasonable tariff, they're hurting them because they're effectively stifling an avenue for their represented artists to be heard and, hopefully, generate more work.

The Charlemagne boys have a lot of Charlemagne-related stuff to do. Matthew and Red Zeppelin are writing alot. Dan has a solo record ready to go. I have...a few lonely months ahead. Except that I'll be playing steel with Dan.
Anyway, we've got five gigs booked from now until the end of November, three of which are in Hamilton. After that, nothing booked, and no plans for a while. Something of a hiatus (dare I use that word on the Jambands.ca message board). Just wanted to put the word out; see us in November, or you won't for quite a long while.

Hey Rich, you guys are sounding tight, but I'm really trying to do something here where I'm calling the shots. I'm the Zappa, looking for the Mothers, dig? I wouldn't want to encroach on what you've got going on. I do want to come see you guys when I next get the chance, though. Come down and play in Hamilton!
And Ari...I think the plan is to head down for my 6th Mule experience, indeed. See you there?
-
I walked in without paying at about midnight and caught the last few tunes. Holy shit, were they good. I went and got drunk afterwards. Good for me.

The time has come to form a musical venture where I am at the helm, and I've decided it should begin as a power trio. I know a lot of players, but any who I'd consider to be right for this project are too busy.
Looking for a hard-drug-free bass player and drummer with gear, transportation, time and commitment to run the gamut from loose Neil Young/Crazy Horse-style jams to Sabbath-and-heavier style riffing to Gov't Mule Mk I-style improvisation. I write and sing; if you do too, that's a plus. Trying to steer clear of any dinosaur rock cliches, I'm thinking of a sound heavily rooted in the old and filtered through an indie mindset.
I'm in Hamilton and have rehearsal space here, but would travel to Toronto or another relatively close locale for the right folks. Please e-mail me at aaron@thegoodrev.ca

my morning jacket - "i will be there when you die"
My friend and bandmate Dan Griffin covered that song last night in an acoustic set. Great tune.
As far as tunes that tug at the ol' heartstrings for me, I can think of a few:
Hank Williams - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
The Band - Tears of Rage, It Makes No Difference, there are so many good ones
Joel Plaskett - The Day You Walked Away

Bump
Only fitteen minutes left this week, sorry I was slow on the draw.
-
When are you heading East man?
-
Well fry my grits, I guess it won't matter anyway, because we've had to cancel in Kingston. Sort of bummed. There will be others though.
-
The Parkas are a great band, too. I'd like to make it out tonight.
-
Crowes are on now and killin' it. New keyboard player is great, so is Paul Stacey on guitar (but we knew that already). Something funky with the mix, though, Rich's guitar seems to be absent, Stacey nice and loud. Killer though.
Wow, it's really as if there's no mic on Rich's rig. There's this little drum break in the middle of Morning Song now and Rich is playing along a little bit, his guitar is barely there. Shitty.

Shain I responded to your message on Stillepost. If you look at the website, Lanois, Roberts and Big Sugar are past performers at the Hamilton Music Awards. Performing this year are Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, and Jacksoul.
