  1. Jesus Fuck, did this band blow my face off.

I first heard of Rose Hill Drive about two and a half years ago. I had gotten way into the North Mississippi Allstars and RHD was playing a series of dates with them in the States. The North Mississippi message board was on fire with people saying, "Holy shit, you MUST check out this opening band."

I downloaded a bunch of Rose Hill Drive live cuts and loved them. They hadn't done a record so there was nothing to buy. I grooved to these killer cuts for about six months and relentlessly checked their tourdates, but they never even came close to Toronto. I lost track of them.

Two and a half years later, they've finally just released their debut record, and by some miracle, ended up at the Horseshoe tonight.

The rumour is that the guitar player is 21 years old, which would have made him 18 or 19 when I first heard of the band.

In short, a fucking balls-to-the-wall Zeppelin/Sabbath 70's power trio blowjob. Skull-crushing riffs? Check. Lengthy, in-depth instrumental excursions? Check. Powerful vocals and lyrics? Check. All-around "this band fucking kills it better than any band I've seen in a long time" factor? Fucking check, bitches. This band kills it, and anybody on this message board for love of rock will love them.

  2. I'm headed to the Shoe tonight to see Rose Hill Drive and it occured to me that I can grab a ticket for Magnolia Electric Company while I'm there. They're playing next Tuesday Sept 12 at Lee's Palace. Anybody else into them/planning to go?

I saw them in Toronto in March and they positively flattened me...pure Neil Young/Crazy Horse vibe. Jason Molina is the songwriter/singer/guitarist/driving force. He released an ungodly number of records under the name "Songs:Ohia" between 1996 and 2002, including a split EP with My Morning Jacket (on average, 2 albums and 2 7" singles each year).

In 2003 he formed Magnolia Electric Company and they released their self-titled. They have since released three more (!) full-length records and an EP, and Molina has done two solo records and a 7" in the meantime. Holy shit, this guy makes a lot of music.

For fans of roots-rock that ventures into sad bastard territory, like Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and newer acts like My Morning Jacket and Ryan Adams.

  3. Excellent report, thank you cowboy.

I don't understand how the sound at the Dollar is supposed to go down. It's an awesome place, I've been seeing music there since before I was of age. But it's this big long room with the stage on one side, with the soundboard at side stage facing in, like where the monitor desk would be at a place that had a separate monitor mix. The only thing I can surmise is that the PA is in mono (most club PAs are set up in mono anyway) and the guy mixes for his side and figures the other side will be cool, but I have heard the sound suck there before, big time.

Glad to hear it was a good show otherwise, though.

They're from Halifax, and have a wicked cool early Dylan thing happening.

    Here's what their MySpace says:

As a band, The Grass are a melting pot of musical styles; three chord country, jangley folk-rock, gritty 50s style power chording, mammoth arena rock and spirited do-wop group sing-a-longs all find their place in the music. Inspired by old records and ancient concert footage, the members of The Grass joined together in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to play music that sounds like all their favorite bands performing simultaneously. While trying to play as often as possible, The Grass have appeared at rock n roll bars, country clubs, art galleries, discos, hunting lodges, museum openings, book readings, graduation ceremonies, lunch hours, and library socials, and they will continue to play whenever they are allowed.

We're pretty feckin good, if I do say so myself. We made extra sure to include two members of Charlemagne, so as to attract the ladiezzz. Here's what our MySpace has to say (as if I didn't write it):

We all play a bunch of instruments, to varying degrees of success; we all make our best attempts at singing and writing, to varying degrees of success. Our heroes are The Band and Neil Young. We call it folk-/country-/roots-rock and roll. It's a down-home country boy's soul music, and we hope you like it.

I think this picture says it all (thanks phorbesie :D):

Seriously, though, $2.75 pints of Steamwhistle on Mondays at Casbah.

I do believe I have mastered the official whiteymuseum method of show posting.

  5. We did however play in about 4 different keys throughout the hour + movement.

I'll admit, when I found out I wasn't playing I sat and watched for about 20 minutes and it didn't really seem like it was going anywhere...I had another gig earlier in the night and hadn't eaten dinner, so I went and got a slice, sat for a while, then came back. I really wasn't sure if it was one key or not.

And Dave, I mean no disrespect. We all know you can play.

On the bright side, my gig at Casbah was friggin awesome!

  6. The whole night was pushed waaaay back; Damo and the band only ended up doing one set and none of the second-set guests got up there (me included).

The musicians were all top-notch, but Dave was telling me after the show that there was absolutely no discussion as to how they would change between songs or anything like that, so it ended up being one loooooong vamp in the same key without a break. The drummer, Mike, switched it up a bit. Alexis was saying that, with the four dudes up there in complete improvisational mode, Damo's gibberish vocals were holding them back from doing their thing properly, and I agreed. Curious to know what Dave's final impressions were.

  7. Man Falls 60 Feet at Red Rocks Ben Harper Concert

DENVER -- There's no word yet on the condition of a man who fell while attending a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater Wednesday night.

Witnesses say the man was trying to lift himself up to sit on the steel railing as the Ben Harper show was ending. The man apparently lost his balance and fell about 60 feet into rocks and bushes. This occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on the ramp leading down to the Upper South Lot.

The man was airlifted to St. Anthony's Hospital and people who saw what happened say he was badly hurt, and that he was unconscious and appeared to have broken several bones.

His identity has not been released. Witnesses said he was in his 20s. One witness told 7NEWS that a female Red Rocks security officer cleared his airways and appeared to save him from suffocating in his own blood because je was bleeding from the nose and mouth.

Red Rocks officials said this is the third time in nearly three decades that someone has been flown to the hospital from a concert.

Anne Williams, with Denver Theaters and Arenas, said that there has never been an incident like this on the South Ramp and that management hopes concert goers "use common sense when using the venue."
