  1. I, too, am a now a fan of Randy Bachman. I've seen him play once in honour of Neil Young at the Governor General's awards in Ottawa (jamming Neil tunes!), once with the Guess Who in Calgary, and once with his own band on Vancouver Island along with Neil Young, the Barenaked Ladies and Bachman's son (just a couple weeks back).

I have decided he is now one of my favourite old-time rockers; a true legend.

Happy Birthday Randy and keep on "workin' overtime" for us!

  2. At least as far as Ween is concerned, I think that they play amazing music despite being as wasted as they often are. I think that Ween almost sees it as a challenge or a game to see how many different things and just how much of any one thing they can ingest on stage and still rock. They have been pretty much doing the same thing since they were teenagers, so they never really grew out of it.

The Dead and others, I think, were out to "expand their consciousness". I'm not quite sure that anyone can say what that means, but I think it's different than partying your face off, like I think Ween has been doing for their whole lives.

Either way; I always loved Jerry's music, and I continue to love Ween, in whatever condition they played.

  3. I was just watching a pet TV show, and the fish-expert on today gives me reason to believe that no one really considers fish pets. She suggested for a fresh-water tank:

"... some small goldfish, some medium goldfish ... maybe something a little more interesting that eats other fish..." ::

(I should comment that I always thought of my late, bluish purple Chinese-fighting-fish, "Kirkham", as a true pet.)

  4. I only ever saw JGB one time, and it was awesome. I do remember "joking" however after Jerry died, "Sure, everyone's wondering whether the Dead will continue. I want to know if the Jerry Garcia Band will continue." Can you imagine how surprised I was to find out that they actually did?!? Of course, they were called the John Kahn Band ... until like two weeks later when John Kahn bit the big one too! Then, I said, well that must be it. Nope! That was the birth of "JGB", who I think are still playing to this day; are they not? (Talk about a band that refuses to die!)

  5. Well, by coincidence, although I was living in Ottawa at the time I actually skipped that last Highgate show as it happened to fall on an extremely important occasion that didn't allow me to go. So, although I do seem to recall a bit of suckiness in that show (which I must admit I probably haven't listened to in 8 years) I think I can still safely say that he never sucked when I saw him. To this day, though, I still wish I made it to that show. If I'd only known...

  6. I definitely agree with our friend VermontDave. I tend to presume that most Americans that chose to live in Canada would likely be anti-Bush. For that reason, and as close as the polls are these days, American-Canadians have to get registered and vote in this election.

You can even register online and I really encourage any of you who qualify to do so:

    http://www.overseasvote2004.com/

And that is great Ahess that you made the effort and voted! Nice!

  7. I just kept phoning the Cowichan Centre, my friend. I was actually away in Toronto at the time, and just kept a cell phone handy. I started phoning at the moment tix went on sale and just kept hitting redial while I went on with my day.

I still have a few programs from the show left, if anyone wants one. Some have already been claimed and mailed out, so goin' fast....

  8. My apologies, Doug. I must have misunderstood.

I was under the erroneous impression that when you suggested: "I cant seriously believe that if Kerry somehow pulls off a miracle and defeats Bush, that he will be any different or better than any other president. He will simply become another scapegoat for people to blame everything on," and "I just hope he (Moore) take his tirades and propaganda and goes away for awhile after the election is over", you did not actually mean that you think Moore goes on "tirades" and proliferates "propaganda" and for that reason should go away.

You actually meant that you, personally, have heard enough from Michael Moore, and since he "definitely" does not have the “answers that will fix any of the problems/issues around Bush" he should just go away and stop campaigning to those who may yet be undecided. After all, it would be a "miracle" if Kerry won, and in any event he would "just be another scapegoat" who "won't be any better".

Good point. If I may summarize your argument for simplicity’s sake:

Bush sucks, but Kerry will probably suck too, so why bother campaigning to get people to vote Kerry? Besides, even if Kerry wins, he will just be treated as a scapegoat, and we would not want to subject poor Mr. Kerry to that. Let's just take the laissez faire approach, because all that loud, annoying campaigning (by Moore) is just annoying. In fact, it’s not just annoying but redundant, because Doug has already heard it all.

How can anyone argue with that? I’m convinced. Down with Michael Moore!

  9. I just hope he (Moore) take his tirades and propaganda and goes away for awhile after the election is over.

Good point. I mean, Michael Moore is certainly the one responsible for the majority of American propaganda these days. Oops, wait a second. I forgot about those childish attack-advertisements by the Republicans as well as the one-liner sound-byte speeches by their 'fearless leader' warning of doom and impending attacks and the need to give up all civil rights to deal with this rampant problem. So, wait a second, who is going off on tirades and proliferating propaganda again? I think I'm confused...

  10. [color:"brown"] NEIL YOUNG w/ Randy Bachman, Tal Bachman, and Barenaked Ladies

So, I'm a little slow at posting this, but in my defence I have been moving apartments ever since Sept. 18. (I'm still in the process.)

Anyway, I was at this amazing show.

It was a benefit for the Crofton Airshed Citizens Group and the Unbleached Foundation . These groups were fighting against a local paper mill on Vancouver Island that wants to start burning railway ties and old tires to save costs, regardless of the environmental impact. Randy Bachman lives on Saltspring Island, and he heard about this. He then spearheaded this show.

The show was in a hockey arena. Now that's Canadian! 2,500 tickets. There was a big video screen, but for some reason Neil wasn't shown on it. (Probably his choice.) Everyone else appeared on it, but it didn't really matter much because the place was so small. The acoustics, unfortunately, sucked.

    The show went like this:

    1. Tal Bachman

    2. David Suzuki (speaking of course)

    3. Michael Ableman (local enviromentalist also speaking)

    4. Randy Bachman

    5. Neil Young

    6. Barenaked Ladies

(I am presuming that Neil had to leave early b/c of Farm Aid the next day. He wasn't there to jam with everybody for the encore, and it explains why he didn't play last.)

TAL BACHMAN was surprisingly mildly entertaining. He ended his set with that "High Above Me" radio song. I didn't recognize anything else (and I apologize to any serious Tal Bachman fans among you.)

RANDY BACHMAN was the surprise of the evening. Like any good Canadian I have, of course, seen the Guess Who live, and even saw Randy Bachman play some Neil Young at the Governor General's awards a while back, but I was really surprised at how awesome his set was! He had a great stage presence, told hilarious stories, and brought along a guy from Victoria that just happens to sound a helluva lot like Burton Cummings.

    Set List:

    Prairie Town

    No Sugar Tonight

No Sugar Tonight w/ New Mother Nature

    Let It Ride

    She's Come Undone

    These Eyes

Looking Out for Number One (I think that's the name)

    No Time Left For You

    Takin' Care of Business

NEIL, of course, was mindblowing. He never ceases to amaze me. He was without a band and did most of his set as a duet with his wife Pegi. Pulled out some incredible songs too:

    Pocahontas

    Harvest Moon

    Journey Through the Past

    Cowgirl In the Sand

Don't Let It Bring You Down

    Birds

    Human Highway*

    Goin' Back*

    Old King*

Four Strong Winds* (John Denver tune)

    E: Field of Opportunity*

    E: Comes a Time*

    * w/ Pegi Young

So, after Neil, the BARENAKED LADIES played. It was kinda weird, because you were left in this post-Neil-state, and then you had this light, silly music. It was mildly amusing, though, and I will do my best to give you the set list, although I really don't know their music too well, (after that cassette they self-released in the '90s with the same songs on boths sides) so I'm making up some of these song titles according to lyrics...

    Roadrunner Theme

    It's All Been Done Before

You Can Be My Yoko Ono -> "Neil Young Rules" (chant) -> Tonight's the Night (jam) -> You Can Be My Yoko Ono (reprise)

    Blame It On Me

    Bye Bye Self-Respect

"Crosby Stills Nash and Young" (those were the lyrics) (to tunes of "Jack and Diane" and "Deck the Halls")

    I'm the Farmer

    Oh Oh

    Have You Seen My Love

Nothing Left That Won't Cross Over

For Every (I can't read the rest of my handwriting)

    Since You Looked At Me

One Week Since You Looked At Me

(spaced out and entirely missed 2 songs)

Lovers In a Dangerous Time (Bruce Cockburn)

    Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet*

    * w/ Randy Bachman

    Awesome evening in Duncan, BC!

    FREE STUFF FOR YOU...

So, I also want to say that I have about a dozen or so extra programs from the show. Velvet has already claimed one, but if anyone else wants one please private message me and I will mail one out. (First come first served.)

(Oh ya, one more thing. My girlfriend is thinking of sending me to psychoanalytic counselling to deal with my obsessive-compulsive tendency of writing down every song during concerts...)

  11. Here is a cut-and-past from Don Ross' most recent email newsletter. Some of the dates should be convenient for you Easterners (and I mean "Easterners" as opposed to Westerners, without meaning to offend the truly eastern "Maritimers".) Check this out:

  12. I have to say I have been really surprised at how many people seem to like this band. I saw them once, opening for and backing up Beck, and I was so irritated by the end of their set I considered leaving before Beck. The weird thing is, however, that a number of people whose opinions I respect seem to like these guys. Is there a particular album I should check out, as I seem to have missed the boat on this one.
