  1. The language could stoke all sorts of trouble, I bet. It just strikes me as inaccurate, and calculated only to have emotional appeal. I mean, what is the definition of a nation, anyway? Clear boundaries, a military, a currency....
  2. . Now that you mention it, it does make you wonder what gets edited these things, a la Wag the Dog. What bugs me is file footage, like that one of the Palestinians celebrating "on" 9/11, which had been taken from stock footage from who knows when.
  3. Well put. I've been using him in my classes on persuasive/argumentative essays to show how the open-endedness of science (where argument belongs) can be compromised when people engage those who put their claims out as non-negotiables (persuasion). For Dawkins, his non-negotiable is the scientific method (fair enough?), but he betrays that at a variety of points when he comes out with his attacks on religion (failing, e.g., to acknowledge the variety of ways the term itself can be understood, and not being flexible himself in how he uses it - failing, in other words, to actually communicate with the people he confronts). Messy!
  4. Eric Clapton, soundtrack for Rush. Music that seems to establish a definite mood. What do you call that wry, tired, blurry lights-in-the-distance, ultra-late night sound? Something about this reminds me of the Rheostatics' soundtrack for Whale Music.
  5. KK - - I like throwing that Zappa interview on from time to time. It's eerily accurate. SK, both those docs are excellent. And apparently the Jesus Camp in question had to shut down after the documentary came out, for all the bad press they got. Pity they probably won't take anything away from that than that the devil's out to get them.
  6. He's spot on, of course, except for the being hard on the kids. It ain't their fault if they're not allowed to disagree.
  7. Hey, why reinvent the wheel? It's worked already.
  8. Specifics of the legislation aside for a moment, I got a real kick out of this line - QED!
  9. What the hell are they thinking? Peter Jackson dropped from ‘The Hobbit’
  10. I always get a kick out of the fact that fark.com has "Florida" as one of their news story tags.
  11. (Sounds a little more intriguing than Panoramix, the original French name ). BUMP! The Tad Hackish Band has this effect on you:
  12. Interesting idea. Is there some master list of charities around that we might peruse?
  13. Thanks for the reminder . I resign myself grumpily to winters. I did get a nice view of the stars tonight for the first time in what seems like ages. I see too more and more houses with Christmas lights up, too (!).
  14. Was he at first mistaken for a Samsquamch?
  15. Any good bands playing that night? We could see if they play any differently.
  16. I figure somehow I'll have to get myself a copy of this.
  17. Oh, no, I wouldn't want to blame anything on Borat; I was just thinking of him pulling a Borat stunt and fucking it all up. But true, we all have responsibility for the things we say and do; he seems to have been quick off the mark to take that on. I just don't have the interest or energy to follow any of that up.
  18. I agree - he did look scared of himself. Of course, he is an actor by trade, but when the audience keep laughing at the stunned look on his face, as if he was in character as Kramer (or maybe it was just nervous laughter), there was what seemed like real frustration coming out. His saying he needed some time for real introspection I thought was the healthiest thing (for everybody) he came out with. Then again, who's to say what's real in this whacky postmodern world. For all we know, the thing could have been staged, and he could be pulling a (very strange, mind you) Borat.
  19. Sounds like Homer trying to use reverse psychology.
