  1. it's hard to tell people you went to see a guy who plays the violin and whistles, and make it sound cool.

GREAT show! Bird played for almost 2hrs. its really interesting to watch him play to see how he loops the whistles, violin riffs. almost like brian eno is off stage tweaking knobs, but im pretty sure its just Bird doing it all himself. he played a lot of songs that I wanted to hear, like nervous tic, and fiery crash, scythian empire off armchair apocrypha. picked up the new CD at the show for $15 - so much better to put the $ in his pocket than HMV's.

Montreal's Plants and Animals opened. (they played Hillside this year) pretty decent band, but the crowd was more into drinking than listening. (too bad too, his mother was there.) Dosh (Bird's drummer's project) is opening for other shows.

    anyone else go?

  3. It's all in good fun, but you have to know you're taking a risk when you go in.

but that's the thing ... more often than not, the mosh pit spontaneously emerges. it's not something that you go in to. ive been to a number of shows over the last few years where the band has either stopped playing, or has scolded the crowd for moshing. buzzkill? maybe. but it ensures the safety of those sweet pretty things that camped out all night to get up close. if I was a sweet pretty thing, the last thing I'd want is a big smelly guy shoving his way up next to me so he can slam his wasted friend's head with a beer can and then have him turn to me and burp "what's your problem, honey"?.

  4. didnt Bush say he could impose democracy on Iraq? seems simple enough. ;)

ive just recently gotten into some new research on public perception of various healthcare financing structures: public, private or a mix. still in the design stages, but a cursory review of some of the lit im looking at seems to indicate that generally people want to maintain their own personal abilities to choose how they/we pay for healthcare, prevent others from choosing if those others' choices negatively impact their own choice, and at the same time be able to rely on the public saftey net. in other words, give me everything I want, but dont give anyone else anything I would have to pay (too much) for. from a policy perspective, that's a difficult set of preferences to navigate, so we are looking at ways to establish finance preference equilibria. fun stuff.

  5. ive ordered things via MT in the past which supposedly came with free subscriptions to Rolling Stone, free calendars, etc. and they never arrived. this is the same company that requires you to create an entirely new account every time you order tickets or schwag from a different artist. simply put, MT doesnt have its act together. personally, I wouldnt hold my breath waiting for the CDs.

  6. If our dollar is now the same' date=' why is there still an american and canadian price on magazines and books, I smell a conspiracy...[/quote']

It's got nothing to do with exchange rates. Canada places huge tariffs on books.

I bought a mug at Starbucks (yeah, I know, boooo, hiss, screw you) a couple of months ago. The pricetag said $US 10.50 / $Cdn 14.50, but they only charged me $Cdn 12.50. I paid and hightailed it outta there thinking they'd made a mistake ... Start the Car! ... Turns out a large number of retailers are automatically adjusting their price differentials and there was an article in the Globe about it last week (looked, can't find it). Some greeting card stores are now actually charging the US price in Canada.

  7. Yale History degree, MBA from Harvard. I bet he's more educated than anyone reading this.

Please AD, you've been suckered. Bush barely had a C+ GPA at Yale, and his admission to Harvard was to avoid real military service and was entirely facilitated by his father's influence. And no, he's not 'more educated' than several people reading this.

  8. Hang Seng is a bank, not a person. And the Hang Seng Index is a related measure on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Regardless, Sheratons have never been Canadian, so why would it matter who owns the hotel now or their nationality?

Is it the union's intention to draw attention to the fact that the hotel is owned by a Chinese company, and if so, why? Or, is this just picketline banter, with a rather troubling undertone?
