  1. Braids and M. Ward are the two I am most excited for.

Others are Black Keys and DFA>

    Will check out of curiosity:

    Ed Sharpe

    My Morning Jacket

Erykah (get her with The Roots and that would be primo!)

Initial lineup is weak compared to previous years. (I should make it clear that I'm okay with the love being spread around Jazz and Folk fests too though).

  2. Hey so their Daytrotter session is now finally up (a year later) contains their cover of Fleetwood Mac's Chain, Itty Bitty Baby > Moon At Your Back, and a subtle version of Shanty.

Last year, a six-piece version of BP got in the van for a little tour of Michigan, Illinois and Iowa. We had a good time in Detroit and Chicago and at Knox College in Galesburg but the whole reason for the trip was to visit the fine fellows at Daytrotter.

It's a beautiful thing they have going there. Nestled atop a pizza joint in Rock Island, IL, you'd never know that the Daytrotter guys record a couple bands a day every single day at their unassuming studio. They were very inviting and patient with us, considering none of us had ever done a live-off-the-floor, get-it-right-quick taping before.

Rock Island is part of the Quad Cities, uniting with Davenport, Bettendorf and Moline. When we finished up, the DT guys pointed us over the bridge and into Iowa, where we found a casino / hotel / cruise ship that had cheap rooms. A bottle of tequila, some pizza, a little gambling and too much Wife Swap later, I can safely say it produced one of the best memories we've got.

Hope you enjoy it. Be sure to check out everything Daytrotter has to offer. You could be online for days.

  3. Hey everyone check out the new BP site here: http://bruce-peninsula.com/ (better to start here: http://bruce-peninsula.com/#startspot ) lots to explore. But today is the launch of the Bruce Trail Fire Sale...

As many of you have already heard, Bruce Peninsula was forced into hiatus in December as a principal member of our band was diagnosed with a highly treatable but nonetheless challenging illness to overcome. Our hearts sunk when we heard the news and the band's standing commitments were instantly postponed as we held at the side of our friend.

A few months removed and Neil is out of the hospital and working on the next stages of his recovery. As time has rolled on, our minds have started to drift back towards the release of our completed second full-length album, Open Flames. We had signed off on the master version just one day before Neil's diagnosis, even throwing a big band party to celebrate it with copious wine and indian cuisine all over the tables. There we all got excited about a possible March release date and started to daydream about all the touring plans that had been stacking up, which would have made for some of our longest and most fulfilling trips yet.

The thought of getting back in the van is having a very positive impact on Neil's recovery, but he unfortunately won't be ready to go on the road for some time still. As a band that has always known emphatically that our songs belong on a stage, we felt that releasing the record now, without any live momentum behind it, would do a huge disservice to a record that we are truly proud of. So the decision has been made to push the album's release back into the Fall. But now for the good news! Bruce Peninsula is not just a band. We are a tight-knit group of friends with a common goal to create together and we always have our hands in many pots at once. While working on Open Flames, there would always be a band member coming to the studio to say they'd made up something new the night before or a strange four track demo crossing the internet from London to Toronto late at night. Some are small, some are borrowed, some just barely missed their chance to be on LP2. Hell, one may be the most ambitious thing we've made to date. So, rather than giving you a full-length record this month, we are pleased to introduce you to the Bush Fires on the Bruce Trail series, in which we'll present you a new little morsel of music on the 21st of each month leading into the fall of 2011 and the release of Open Flames.

We hope that you enjoy the first installment, two of our favourite cover songs, and that you'll check back here each month to see what else we've cooked up. We appreciated the ongoing support and hope you like these oddities. We sure do.

    Also re: Neil's health... http://exclaim.ca/News/bruce_peninsula_launch_b-sides_series_following_neil_havertys_cancer_going_in_remission

The last we heard from Toronto roots collective Bruce Peninsula, frontman Neil Haverty had been diagnosed with leukemia. In an interview with Exclaim!, the singer revealed that he had undergone chemotherapy and was hopeful for a complete recovery. Well, we have some good news: Haverty's cancer is in remission, and Bruce Peninsula are gearing up for some new releases.

In a statement to Exclaim!, Haverty explained, "They call this the 'maintenance phase.' I will still take a pill called ATRA for a year and I will check in with my doctor once a month, but I'm basically done with all the truly icky stuff."

Now that the worst is behind him, Haverty and his band are ready to put out some new music. We already knew that Bruce Peninsula's sophomore album, Open Flames, was in the can. Before they release that into the world, though, the band will unveil Bruce Trail Fire Sale. According to a press release, this is a "digital B-side series that collects one-off songs, covers, live videos... whatever we can dream up."....

  4. Same here. I don't think they are bad, but I am not as ecstatic about them as some are. However, I did see them live at Bluesfest and thoroughly enjoyed the show, was great set.

However, I am excited for them to win such high praise as oppose to the manufactured rubbish. Same applies to Esmerelda. They are honest musicians, and that integrity is something that was lacking in the bulk of these award shows. Hopefully, and it has already started to, this will spark a change.

    http://www.spinner.ca/2011/01/05/patrick-watson-snow-day-for-lhasa/

January 1, 2011 marked the first anniversary of the passing of celebrated Montreal singer-songwriter Lhasa de Sala, known to her fans simply as Lhasa. In honour of their good friend, who succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 37, fellow Montreal musician Patrick Watson has collaborated with instrumental group Esmerine to release 'Snow Day for Lhasa.'

"When she passed away it snowed in Montreal for four days, which is why it's called snow day," Watson tells Spinner. "The lyrics are mainly based around how snow ate up the whole city, so I guess that's what I was thinking about when I first wrote them."

    Lhasa Remembered

The dreamy lullaby itself is actually based on a song that de Sala had been working on with Esmerine harpist Sarah Pagé before she died. It seemed fitting to Pagé and the other musicians she brought on board, including Watson, that the instrumental number be reworked as a tribute.

"Sarah and I started doing the [final] version like the 14th or 15th of December so it was kind of a last-minute thing," says Watson, who collaborated with de Sala on 2009's 'Wooden Arms,' the follow-up to his Polaris Prize-winning 'Close to Paradise.' "We thought, 'Oh, it would be nice to release it on the anniversary [of her death],' and it kind of all fell into place at the right time."

After meeting at a fundraiser close to a decade ago, de Sala and Watson become, as he puts it, "close buddies." "We helped each other other because we're kind of polar opposites. She was always well-written and well-prepared, and I was always kind of spontaneous, so we always helped each other whenever we could and were always sharing songs."

"I'm very happy that people are going to download the song and think about her," he adds.

Listeners can make a donation to Ontario's Owl Conservatory Foundation in honour of de Sala through the 'Snow Day for Lhasa' website. Watson thinks the cause is fitting for the Juno-winning multilingual musician, who was named 'Best Artist of the Americas' by the BBC's World Music Awards in 2005, in addition to earning many other accolades.

"Finding the right foundation is always an interesting challenge, trying to put yourself into her skin to see where she'd want the money... I think the Owl foundation is great because she loved owls and it was an icon that was kind of around her."

"She was an amazing singer and an amazing friend," says Watson. "It's nice to know that the memory carries on."

Some new shows have been announced as well around Quebec. Timber Timbre opening for first three, and Barr Brothers for latter two.

    http://brucetrails.blogspot.com/2010/12/healing-power-in-2011.html

Inhabitants of the Bruce Peninsula Multi-verse

As we close the door on 2010 we'd like to thank all of those who came out to our shows, took the time to explore our recordings and supported the BP vessel as it navigated the waters of a crazy crazy year.

So, it is with a heavy heart that we announce that our plans for 2011 are currently on hold.

Neil Haverty has recently been diagnosed with Leukemia.

The good news is that it is a highly treatable form of cancer that has a 95% success rate associated with Neil's treatment. He is supported by a wide network of friends and family who are standing behind him in this difficult time.

As for the band: We are not breaking up. We will not stop recording. But for the immediate future, all of our touring plans are cancelled while Neil works toward a full recovery.

What Neil needs most right now are positive vibes, well wishes, and love concoctions of the highest caliber. If you are a fan, friend or foe and would like to send Neil some healing power, please send all messages to : neilhaverty@gmail.com

Any other questions, or for a mailing address please email: brucepeninsula@gmail.com

If you'd like to help out, please help contribute to the research and care facilities at the Princess Margaret hospital here in Toronto.

Or donate to a cancer charity of your choice.

In other band news, our second record is completed and mastered. We also have an EP in the can and ready to go. We will continue recording, collaborating and excavating as Neil recovers.

Please stay tuned for a fundraising event, happening Saturday, January 29th that will involve lots of great music, art, food, drinks and conversation.

We appreciate your continued support in this time of need.

    THANK YOU

    XOBP

  7. Yeah DR is sick too.

The Durbs' second album is going to slay, theres this opening track they played (which is also the opener of the album, says Kyle) and its pretty much Durbs going prog. 3 o 4 different sections, crazy riffs and drums and sounds 90s Bush prog-cranked up!
