  1. EGGPLANT ENTERTAINMENT and ROCK CREW PRODUCTIONS PRESENT

    STONY PLAINS RECORDING ARTIST

[color:brown]CORB LUND & THE HURTIN' ALBERTANS

    With Special Guests [color:brown]ELLIOTT BROOD

“Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer" is the fourth and CD from Alberta's Corb Lund. The album was produced by Harry Stinson (Dead Reckoners, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett) and recorded at Treasure Isle Recorders in Nashville, TN. The CD also features guest vocals from legends Ian Tyson and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott.

"Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer" runs the gamut of roots music forms and flavours, from western swing to Waylon-esque country rock to ragtime to acoustic blues. The album continues in the vein of the band's previous release "Five Dollar Bill" by combining traditional western and acoustic stylings with incisive lyrics in an 'innovatively traditional' style.

“Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer†is certified Gold and won the Best Roots & Traditional award at the 2006 Junos. Corb is nominated for nine CCMA’s, including Album of the Year and Artist of the Year.

The ever-stylish Elliott Brood will add their critically acclaimed sound to the show.

Doors at 9 PM, music begins at 10 PM. $15 at the door.

The Hidden Cameras had yet to release a note of commercially available music when, in early 2002, they became among the most discussed and celebrated unsigned bands in the history of their native Toronto. At the close of the year, they had been the subject of uncommonly sensational features in The Globe and Mail (Canada’s national newspaper) as well as in every daily and weekly in Toronto.

The reasons for the reckless enthusiasm of these usually cautious journals are simple: revelatory live performances that attack and transcend the staid, dispassionate traditions of rock nightclub culture; and the songs of band front-man and mastermind Joel Gibb, a talent of uncommon melodic and poetic gifts. “The Hidden Cameras aren’t famous,†wrote the Toronto Star in July, “but if you believe the buzz, it’s only a matter of time.â€

Now, shortly after becoming the first Canadian band to be signed by Rough Trade in the label’s 25-year history, The Hidden Cameras have delivered The Smell of Our Own, surely – and without hyperbolic padding – one of the most enthralling and individual debut albums to come from anywhere in years. The Smell of Our Own is an all-too-rare type of debut – the type that sounds as if it was conceived in its own aesthetic universe, its worldview and core sound already whole. But at the same time, it suggests that The Hidden Cameras are only beginning to evolve.

The Hidden Cameras might fleetingly remind listeners of other great artists, but the heart of the group’s sound is best explained by a flip but accurate descriptor that Gibb created when the Cameras was only the seed of an idea: “gay church folk music.†“’Gay’†meaning ‘happy’,†Gibb says, although his songs have also drawn wide acclaim for their fearlessly explicit but remarkably touching examinations of homosexuality.

‘Church’ refers to the implicit gospel influence in the Camera’s music; the cavernous, cathedral-like air of their recordings (some of the group’s now-legendary early concerts were staged in Toronto churches); and the religious/spiritual imagery that weaves comfortably around the erotic and romantic themes in Gibb’s lyrics.

‘Folk’ addresses not only the central motif of Gibbs strummed acoustic guitar, but the communal, open-door policy that has seen the band swell to as many as 15 on-stage members, including male go-go dancers who strip down to underwear and balaclavas and encourage the audience to sing along to lyrics projected onto a backdrop. “Indie shows, generally in my mind, are associated with people not moving, smoking cigarettes, maybe making little insults to their friends about people who are trying to dance,†Gibb said in a recent newspaper interview. “For us, it’s about engagement. The dancers are there to take away some inhibitions…It’s about enjoying yourself and your body.â€

No longer the secret of Toronto and the few Canadian cities lucky enough to have been visited by them, The Hidden Cameras are now poised to belong to the world. Listen to The Smell of Our Own, and know that bands as special as this rarely happen along. And know that one has, just when we needed it. Their latest album, AWOO, is in stores now.

  4. The Can Jam scene is in the same place as the US jam scene ... pretty much dead in the water. Things got a little better during "the hiatus" but when Phish got back together and then 'broke up' that was it ... there's no one leading the charge anymore ... there's no jam band in either country that has a mainstream profile. I saw it at shows in Kingston over the last couple of years ... GTB and JSB have been getting more or less the same turnouts for the last two years (even though the material is getting waaaayy better) and all the lesser known jam bands are pretty much doing nothing here. Things are probably different in other cities ... but there is NO jam scene here at all, when there used to be quite a good one.

What a sweet double bill that is! Looks like a road trip coming up.

Skelter, as your time with Rock Crew draws to a close, as a music fan, I want to say thanks. What you've done over the last number of years to help build a credible music scene in K-town has been absolutely incredible, and, if ever, there was one who did it because of their love of music it was you. Thanks. Hope to see you on the 21st.

Ah, bless you Dr. J. Thanks for the kind words.

I may also see you this Thursday, non?

  6. Well, the deal is done, and Rock Crew is now belonging to a lovely new pair of fine young folks. We'll be announcing details soon enough ...

  7. Woodenheads is quite possibly the best restaurant in Kingston. Go for the meals, then go next door to the Brew Pub for some pints ... your Kingston journey will be complete.

As for me, Jaimoe mentioned that I book the live music at Elixir ... I don't actually anymore, Rock Crew has been sold to a new pair of owners and I'm getting into real estate this fall.

Merchant MacLiam at the bottom of Princess St. sometimes has decent live acts, but you'll have a great time at the Wolfe Island Music Festival ... definitely the best, most laid-back vibes I've ever witnesses at a festival.

  8. pretty much any Phish/Trey/whatever article based around a new tour/album/whatever is all the same. The journalists all get the same press release, and base their questions on that release, so they end up giving more or less the same answers. Check out all the press surrounded Story of the Ghost (editing jams into songs), Billy Breathes (blob), and Round Room (demos made into an album).

Then again, most journalists have stock questions they ask everyone anyways.

  10. .

Meanwhile a bartender opens the fridge behind them, pulls off the beercap, hands you the beer and expects a tip every single time.

I'm actually with ya on this. I've worked in a few bars in Kingston, where I'm usually putting on shows, sometimes after working 9 hours delivering rented couches to sketchy people. Been offered a tip twice in a year for lugging that shit around (we can't accept tips), and the bartenders are making a couple of hundred a night, tax free.

They work hard, but I don't think it's worth that much.
