  1. Rock Crew Productions, CFRC 101.9 FM and Elixir Nightclub present:

    Femme Generation

    The Creeping Nobodies

Thursday, April 27 - $6 at the door or in advance at www.rockcrew.ca

Femme Generation’s first full-length album Brothers and Sisters, Alone We Explode was produced by Dave MacKinnon (The Fembots) in the summer of 2005 and saw it's way into people's hands in February of 2006. Recorded in a barn, the album explores new textures and instruments to build upon the raw tones already present in the band's signature sound. Restricting themselves to analog recording and live-off-the-floor takes, the band managed to exploit the atmosphere and natural sounds of their surroundings (including an impromptu Bat Choir). The result is a record that breathes with anachronistic freedom and all the life of a brand new tree fort. Brothers and Sisters, Alone We Explode was released through Permafrost Records, home of fellow emerging artists Barmitzvah Brothers and Jon-Rae and the River.

Femme Generation's slow formation began in 2002 with Bernard Kadosh (Vocals, Guitar) and Aaron Hutchings (Keyboards) piercing their eardrums in a lonely rehearsal room. By late May 2003 the duo enlisted Paul Filippelli (Drums), a jazz expatriate recently returned from a pan-Asian soul-searching expedition. The group began fusing influences with a revolving door of bassists. With two weeks left until their scheduled recording sessions, a Montreal émigréé answered an ad the day after moving to Toronto. John Rivera (Bass) hopped aboard and began an intense immersion process. The starting point was a sound born of urgency that reached through disparate influences such as The Stooges, The Smiths, Curtis Mayfield, and Talking Heads. The result was 2004's Circle Gets The Square, their debut EP which made the Top 10 discs of 2004 in Toronto.

The Creeping Nobodies are a five-piece from Toronto, Ontario. The past year has been filled with excitement and near constant activity for the band. Here’s what they’ve been up to:

A twelve inch VINYL EP called Half Saboteur was released fall ‘05 by Rob Gordon's Bloodworks Music (also home to No Dynamics). Jeff McMurrich recorded four of the five songs from this release at Halla Music in Toronto. Halla's echoey, high-ceilinged room captured the stark, haunting and slightly unnerving sound of the EP. Original art was provided by James Morrison (Brooklyn, NY), and was individually hand-silkscreened onto the sleeve. The first 150 pressed also include a limited run poster. Every copy of the vinyl is also marked with a band member’s fingerprint on the inside record label.

The fall of 2005 saw the band embark on a three-week tour of the Eastern U.S., playing the Deep South just days after Hurricane Katrina hit. Following the release of the E.P. in October, the band toured with Old Time Relijun in the U.S. and Canada.

In the winter, The Creeping Nobodies returned to Halla Music to record again with Jeff McMurrich. These songs will be released in May on the forthcoming Sound of Joy album, along with 7 others recorded with Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, Theoretical Girls, Wharton Tiers Ensemble).

Sound of Joy will be released on Toronto's Blocks Recording Club (Final Fantasy, Ninja High School) which also released the 2004 Creeping Nobodies release Stop Movement Stop Loss. The CD release date is May 2/’06.

Sound of Joy captures the various moods the band has occupied throughout the last 2 years. Overall, there's an emphasis on percussion and rhythm, simple yet striking melodies, slow progressions and sudden changes, and the use of multiple vocals and vocal styles. In the same vein, many of the songs feature members switching to different instruments. In addition to the current 5-piece line-up, James Anderson was also present to add the sounds of metal, glass, paper and wood to many of the songs.

In the immediate future, the band will be playing several shows in Ontario and Quebec, and are planning to tour extensively around the album’s official release date.

(The Populars were originally scheduled to play but apparently their bass player just quit a couple of days ago)

Tickets are $8 advance at Zap Records, Brian's Record Option, Destinations, Chumleighs, Renaissance Music, Elixir and www.rockcrew.ca

The Mahones were formed at the end of the bar at the Toucan Irish Pub in Kingston, (Ontario Canada), in 1990 over a few pints of Guinness and a couple of shots of Jameson’s Irish Whiskey. It was the brilliant idea of Finny McConnell and his musical mentor Barry Williams to put together a band that sounded like The Clash, The Pogues, The Who, The Waterboys, Husker Du and The Dubliners with a dash of The Replacements and a name that rhymed with The Ramones. Once the stew was complete, a one-off gig was booked, March 17th, St. Patrick's Day. Go figure.

Six CDS have now been released (Draggin' The Days, Rise Again, The Hellfire Club Sessions, Live At The Horseshoe, Paint The Town Red, and Here Comes Lucky) and The Mahones have been on too many tours to count. Europe, Scandinavia and North America have been the usual stomping grounds for these Irish-Punk legends.

Always enjoying a rotating line-up of fantastic musicians, this Irish gang of rockers led by singer/songwriter Finny McConnell have played at many major festivals in Europe and North America alongside legends such as Van Morrison, Shane MacGowan, and Christy Moore to name a few. More recently, Terry Woods and Phil Chevron of the Pogues joined The Mahones on stage for a tour of Central and East Coast Canada!

Over the years the music of The Mahones has appeared in several places other than their previously mentioned CDs. These include the title track for the Dan Aykroyd movie "Celtic Pride", the song 100 Bucks was showcased in the movie "Dog Park" (Kids in the Hall), and The Mahones made a special appearance to sing the Canadian and American national anthems at the Air Canada Center in Toronto on St Patricks day, and then there was the time that they blah blah blah...

Now armed with a brand new CD (Take No Prisoners), The Mahones are back!! Look forward to a new world tour starting throughout 2006 that will take the band through North America, over to Europe and Scandinavia and maybe even to Australia and Japan.

Hide your drinks, and lock up you daughters...

    The Mahones are back!!!!

For twelve years, Ken Tizzard was a member of Canadian rock band The Watchmen. As one of the hardest working bands in Canada, The Watchmen ascended to the elite of Canadian rock and with a series of diverse records and a string of top ten singles and Gold and Platinum records that established a highly appealing signature sound. In 2001, Ken began collaborating with Big Wreck front man Ian Thornley on a new band, Thornley. In late 2003, Thornley recorded their debut album “Come Again,†which was received well in both Canada and the U.S. Ken has performed thousands of concerts worldwide. From dark, intimate cabaret style clubs in Russia to entertaining millions worldwide on The Tonight Show, Ken has played in many diverse situations. Nowadays Ken plans to craft a new niche for himself with an exciting new sound that focuses on diversifying the role of the bass.

  5. This Thursday, April 6 at Elixir Nightclub (14 Garrett Street), Eggplant Entertainment and Rock Crew Productions present Josh Ritter, with special guest Valery Gore. Tickets are on sale now at Zap Records, Brian's Record Option, Destinations, Renaissance Music, Chumleighs, Elixir and online at www.rockcrew.ca

Hailing from the unlikely, small town of Moscow, Idaho, twenty-nine year old Josh Ritter crafts songs that are a rare gift of natural, intuitive beauty. His third album, Hello Starling, garnered critical praise and was hailed in the press both here and abroad, especially in Ireland, where it achieved gold status and where Josh has built a fiercely loyal fan base. Publications like The New York Times, Details, USA Today, and Harp have scrambled to describe what made Josh's music so stunning and, in the process, invoked comparisons to a young Springsteen or Leonard Cohen.

Josh has spent much of the past two years touring the world, including stops in Ireland and Canada with Sarah Harmer and Kathleen Edwards. His new album (and first major label release), The Animal Years, will be released on V2 Records on Tuesday, April 4th.

Maybe it's the fact that her backseat is full of flyer mail or that her socks are green or that the grass seems blue or that in another life she was Glenn Gould's first piano teacher, but the truth of the matter is that Valery Gore possesses the ability to dissolve the boundaries between age, time, and music. She is as involved with the past as she is obsessed with the modernity of strange, subtle noises and how a piano is meant to sound when its keys fall under her fingers. She understands its idiosyncrasies because her music belongs to such a place where romance still lingers in the night airs, perfumed by the salty sea some miles off to the east.

Introducing Valery Gore. Classically trained, schooled in Jazz and raised on pop and soul, the young Valery is already a songwriter to be reckoned with. She was the girl exposing four hundred peers to F.E. Vanderbeck, Queen, and Chopin at her public school assemblies, while dad sat proud with the video camera. This all happened after countless visits to her grandmother's where Mary Poppins sing-alongs would develop around the piano. Prominent influences for Valery have been Tori Amos, Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright, Fiona Apple, Joni Mitchell, Bjork, Elliott Smith, and Laura Nyro.

  6. Rock Crew Productions, Elixir Nightclub (14 Garrett Street), and CFRC 101.9 FM are very proud to present The Hootenanny Revue featuring: Carolyn Mark, Jenny Whiteley, Oh Susanna, Shuyler Jansen, Luther Wright, and Hank & Lily with guests Tolan McNeil, Dan Whiteley, Cam Giroux and Diona Davies (of Po' Girl) on Thursday, March 30.

Git yer tickets now at Brian’s Record Option, Zap Records, Chumleighs, Destinations, Renaissance Music, Elixir, or online at www.rockcrew.ca

The Story of The Hootenanny Revue so far...

Once upon a time there was a girl named Carolyn Mark. She lived in Victoria and hosted a weekly open mic called The Hootenanny. Then she went on tour and met up with a handsome maniac named Luther Wright.

One day while they shared a veggie dog, Luther turned to Carolyn and said "Why don't we put on a Hootenanny in Kingston?" The necessary phone calls were made and the talent wrangled and to make a long story boring, at the end of the night as they stood in the sold out Irish bar with the line up around the side of the building and the sign-up board boasting the names of such musical royalty as Sarah Harmer, Oh! Susanna, Jenny Whiteley and N.Q. Arbuckle, Carolyn and Luther began to suspect that they just might be "on to something" and like all good obsessive compulsives (which is to say all musicians!, they immediately wanted to repeat the experience oh about as soon as the show had finished.

The next year, Luther chartered a boat(!) and The Hootenanny sailed around Kingston harbour with Carolyn doing the hosting and Oh! Susanna and Jenny Whiteley and Sarah Harmer behind the microphone and Captain Wright behind the wheel and dozens of teary eyed fans left behind on the dock because dang if the darn thing didn't sell out again.

Well the very next year a tour of Ontario and Quebec was booked and Luther and Carolyn and Jenny and Suzie traveled around with the quilted Hootenanny banner (hand sewn at least twice by Miss J. McLaughlin of Victoria who also designs the tour posters and merchandise case and hell even sits in sometimes)

leaving trail of warmed hearts and swollen livers in their wake.

One day Carolyn woke up in the back of the van feeling a little homesick. She turned to her captors and said,

"You know Ontario's great and all but you guys really oughtta come out West sometime."

The following fall, the group (sans Oh! Susanna who was busy having a baby) expanded to include Shuyler Jansen (who moonlights as one quarter of Alberta's Old Reliable but currently represents Saskatchewan) and Hank and Lily (up and coming spooky cabaret feel-good duo whose characters are based on a comic book of their own invention, from Victoria of course). With ranks now swollen to fourteen strong, the group toured around Alberta and B.C. performing The Western Hootenanny Revue. The act became tighter. There was now a theme song and everybody wore matching outfits and the show took on the feel of a slightly evil Up With People with a hearty nod to the inspiration behind most showfolk - The Muppets.

This spring, the whole gang (with Suzy back in the saddle) will tour "the east" again while discovering the true spirit of what it means to be Canadian and how to work well in groups which is no easy feat with five Capricorns running around all seriously believing that they are in charge. There are even plans afoot to record an album and tour DVD.

And just like in the movies, a gang of down-on-their-luck misfits band together and become heroic, able to face the world with confidence while learning alot about themselves and others.

And they all lived scrappily ever after.

    The End

Inside Luca Maoloni's brain exists a planetary system unlike any other. Where non-sensical ideas form and out of his mouth an fingers floats beautiful melodies reminiscent of a time where fun and a care free style of music making were key to creating intelligent, unpretentious albums.

Once the planets were aligned, a big bang occurred and The Old Soul was born. This wasn't an ordinary bang and The Old Soul isn't an ordinary band, they are an experience! An orchestral explosion of horns, drums, saxophones, vibraphones and accordions. Drawing from their pop, calypso, folk and rock influences. The Old Soul taps into the synapses of you brain stimulating parts of your body with their non-linear brand of music making, taking you through waves of emotion leaving you pleasantly exhausted and overwhelmed.

They know the comparisons exist, they are not blind to what came before them. The Old Soul know that place in your memory where the happiest moment occurred, with each melody and harmony they bring it out over and over again with reckless abandon. The Old Soul experience uncrosses your arms, moves your feet and unleashes the gospel...People dance!!! Along with Matt McLaren, Nick Taylor, Jay Anderson, Andrew Zalameda, Juri Biondic, Luca has invited many a friend to join in and add to The Old Soul live experience. After a decade in various bands The Old Soul has come together and recently signed a licensing deal with Universal Music through Maoloni's Hand of God Records. The Old Soul come from the Hand of God, to Maoloni's lips, to your ears. Don't disappoint the Lord.

Montreal resident Krista Muir, through her mischievous alter ego Lederhosen Lucil, has done much to support the notion that one can be pretty weird and still make really phenomenal pop music. Her stage persona –– a German-accented mutant complete with blonde braids, a taste for dried apricots, and a growing wardrobe of faux-hosen –– has captured the imagination of audiences world-wide with a lightning-fast wit. Her 2nd full-length album Tales From The Pantry ranked high on Canadian indie charts and became one of Earshot’s Top 50 albums of 2003. Since the release of her “Apricota†single in November 2004, Lederhosen Lucil spent much of 2005 touring Australia, New Zealand, Texas, and throughout Europe –– often with friend DJ Kid Koala. Krista is currently working with Montreal graphic designer Todd Stewart and photographer Jocelyn Michel on a Lederhosen Lucil art book entitled “The Joy of Hosen: Lederhosen Lucil Up Close und Pictorialâ€, to be released in March 2006. She is also busy working on developing a bilingual television series with filmmaker Kara Blake as well as recording a brand new musical project. This new project ––Lucille –– will hit the road as part of the Lederhosen Lucil book tour in March 2006.

Join Lederhosen Lucil at A Novel Idea (156 Princess Street) from 5 - 7 PM on March 23 for her book signing event!
