  1. This show is mega-awesome. Seriously.

This Thursday, January 5, Rock Crew Productions and Elixir Nightclub present James McKenty & The Spades with special guests Kris Ward and Mississippi Grover. Tickets are $6 at the door, or in advance at www.rockcrew.ca

Relying on craft, not gimmick, James McKenty and The Spades are a high-energy band who draw musical inspiration from classic rock’n'roll and infuse it with a youthful vibrancy which is all their own. Formed in 2003, the trio of James McKenty (vox/guitar), Winchester Street (drums), and Chachi Robichaud (bass) deliver a solid, vigorous live show which excites audiences and critics across the country. Blending infectious rhythms, vocal harmonies, and skilful, soaring guitar to create a seamless sound which belies their age. With producer Gord Sinclair (Tragically Hip), JMATS worked on capturing a live, raw sound at The Hip's Bathouse Studio for their debut album "Burning on Fumes," released August of 2004.

Growing up out of the fertile music community of Peterborough, Ontario, the band's members have played and recorded with some of Canada's leading musicians, including The Sadies, The Silver Hearts, and The Tragically Hip. They are influenced by the music which surrounds them; their community and friends as well as the larger Canadian scene. JMATS in 2004 opened for The Tragically Hip twice playing in front of crowds of 15,000+ in Sarnia and also being part of "Across The Causeway" in Kingston! As well as opening for The Hip, JMATS have shared bills with such Great Canadian artists such as Matt Mays, Cuff The Duke, Jim Cuddy, Matthew Barber, Matthew Good Band, Wide Mouth Mason, Joel Plaskett, Brothers in Stereo, The Golden Dogs, The Sadies, The Trews, Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir, April Wine and international artists Seether and The Blind Boys of Alabama.

The simplest of questions can sometimes lead to the most complex of answers. In this case 22 year old Ottawa born singer-songwriter Kris Ward asks the question, Why is Everybody, Anybody? in fact it is the title to his debut album. Released in May of 2005, this disc contains 10 eclectic songs that show a singer and songwriter attempting to discover reasons for the way people are. The album deals with a wide variety of themes ranging from love and relationships to politics. In fact this album sounds a lot like someone in their mid-20’s attempting to discover just who they are and their place in this often confusing and frustrating world.

The journey began in 1998 when Ward, then 16 purchased his first guitar. Something as simple as a music video was able to permeate the rough skin of a then-teenager and convince him to pick up his guitar and look at the world through new eyes and with a new purpose - do something with your life that you will love to do every minute of every day - he chose to take the route of 'musician'. Ward's headphones travelled across the pond to the UK where he stumbled upon bands such as Oasis, the Stereophonics, Doves and the Verve - bands that had figuratively written the book on modern-brit rock. Taking notes and writing lines, Ward took the brilliant melodies, ringing guitars, and pounding drums with him back across the water and into his own world he had now created.

For the past 6 years, Kris has toiled through the Ottawa music scene, bridging the gap between british rock and indie rock. Working with criticially-acclaimed producer Dave Draves (Kathleen Edwards, Jim Bryson, Kepler) at Little Bullhorn Productions, Ward has created an album that could not only turn his life around on a dime, but the way the entire world views Canadian music.

During the late '90s, after moving back east from Vancouver, I decided to stay in Ottawa for awhile. I lived in a bachelor pad at the back of a house in which some of my friends also resided. While sitting in my basement I heard two of my friends/neighbours, Darrell and Tim, start to mess around on guitar and drums respectively; they were creating this raunchy, swampy garage rock that I could hear as clearly as if I was sitting in the next room, which essentially I was. One day, they asked me if I'd like to play harmonica for a song or two – I said, “Sure!†The next thing I knew, I was playing accordion on a couple tunes, and pretty soon they'd asked me to play organ for the rest of 'em, and “Mississippi Grover†Watson had become a full-time Desecrator.

Oh yeah, that's what we were called, just in case you were wondering – The Desecrators. A raucous, loud and drunken band, we would whip the crowd into a frenzy (people actually stopped talking and watched us when we played at the El Mocambo in Toronto!), incorporating Darrell's frothing sermon intros, guest percussionists, and of course, fire into our sets. Like all great things, The Desecrators eventually decided to call it a day, and we all moved on to other musical projects – Darrell's now in the Golden Famile, Tim's in The Glads, and I've been doing a live version of The Orange Alabaster Mushroom for a few years now.

Last September, we got back together, adding Nat (Glads) on second guitar, to do a “reunion†show at the Dominion Tavern in Ottawa. I had such a great time – maybe this is the Labatt 50 talking – that I wished it wasn't just a reunion gig. When I got back home, I started to put together a set of “Desecrators-esque†songs, finishing off a few unwritten ones, pulling ancient ones out of my felt hat, and filling it out with the odd Link Wray or Little Willie John cover. In February, I picked up a second kick drum pedal, and attached it to my snare drum, allowing me to play both bass and snare drums with my feet. Thus, Mississippi Grover was born again as a one-man-band. Yeah, I know what you're saying: everone's doing that these days. But you see, I live in the country, so bandmates are few and far between, let alone ones who would understand the swampy garage/broken blues stuff I have in mind. Plus, it's quite a bit of a challenge for me to play drums and guitar, and sing at the same time – it's sorta like speaking English while writing in Mandarin Chinese, or playing the accordion. I dig that kind of challenge.

My first one-man-band gig happened in mid-May of this year, after practising for only a couple of months, opening for Merle Knurling & The Silent K up in Ottawa. It was sloppy, I had technical difficulties coming out my wazoo, but damn, it was fun.

Anyway, Mississippi Grover is available, cheap, for your show, houseparty, barmitzvah, whatever - drop me an email. I'm a one-man travelling medicine show, and my tonic is sonic, baby!

  2. Rock Crew Productions and Elixir Nightclub (14 Garrett Street),are very proud to present Mark Wilson, Daniel Chalmers Affair and castingFadora on Thursday, December 29. Doors open at 9 PM, this is a 19+ event. Tickets are $6 at the door, or in advance at www.rockcrew.ca

Formerly of The Roamers, Mark Wilson began a solo campaign this summer by recording his debut EP titled The Endless Elevator Tour. The album stars a wide range of backing musicians including cellist Erika Nielsen who recently performed with Kanye West.

Mark Wilson’s sound has been described as Dinosaur Jr.’s strumming with the alternative country vibe of Neil Young, topped off with very unique vocals.

After playing a couple open mics in Ottawa, a trendy night club called The Thirsty Scholar scooped up Mark to perform series of shows of every Saturday. As the series began, so did a following of weekly crowds of 200 plus.

Live shows range from an intimate solo performance with just an acoustic guitar and harmonica, to a full out backing band with percussion, bass, keys, and cellos.

    The Daniel Chalmers Affair

Every now and then something extraordinary comes along.

This four-member alternative rock band hails from the Kingston, Ontario area. These young musicians bring previous band and a long list of gigging experience to their new endeavour, “The Daniel Chalmers Affairâ€. With a vision for the music that they wanted to create, they have pooled their artistic gifts to form a uniquely uplifting and refreshing sound in rock music.

The members of the band started their musical careers at tender ages of around 10 years old or earlier. The rhythm section have been playing night clubs and public functions since the age of fifteen and they are well known in the Kingston circuit by both their fans and colleagues. The band members have shared the stage with such artists as “Tom Cochraneâ€, “Project Orangeâ€, “Bedouin Soundclash†and more.

Individually, each band member stands out distinctively. Collectively, the band shines as an entity. As performers, their live shows are more then just good music. They are captivating. At shows, “The Daniel Chalmers Affair†is consistent when it comes to bringing out spontaneous enthusiasm from the crowd.

castingFadora was formed in early 2005 out of Kingston, Ontario. Anyways, here is how it all went down ... Chris and Will, who were formerly members of another band known as The Crofters, decided one day that they wanted to start a new project. Being that they were roommates it all just seemed like the right thing to do. All they needed now was find another member. Putting their thinking caps on they thought who better than Hal, who was one of Will's old high school buddies from back home in Cornwall, ON. It just so happened that Hal was also living in Kingston at the time and better yet, a wicked shredder on the axe as well! HA! After recruiting Hal, the three began jamming in Chris and Will's basement. Jamming in the dungeon didn't last long since they got three noise complaints in the first two practices and eventually got a 250$ fine from the coppers. About a month later, one of Hal's good buddies, a young chap by the name of Chris Evans, saved their respective asses. Evans knew that they were looking for a place to jam and he knew just the place. He asked his Dad if they could use his warehouse for rehearsal, and his Dad, being the nice guy that he is, said, "Yeah ... Why not?" cF jams there to this day. Since then castingFadora have developed an original sound and style that they can call their own.

  3. This Thursday, December 22 at Elixir, it's An Acoustic Evening with

    - Kyra & Tully

    - The Lady Racers

    - Derek Downham

    - Erick Turnbull

Cover is $6 at the door or in advance at www.rockcrew.ca

Kyra and Tully have been a long time coming. Like a beacon of love guiding us through a troubled world, Kyra and Tully's music is set to inspire the next generation of bright-eyed lovers. Their music provides a lifeline to the tradition of the duo superstars of the 60s and 70s. Sprouting new melodies in the trail blazed by those real-life couple predecessors, Kyra and Tully are not themselves new to the world of music. Fixtures on the Kingston music scene, they have been doing their thing locally on their own terms, regularly jamming and performing with some of Kingston's best-known homegrown talent. Kyra and Tully have shared the stage with artists such as Ember Swift, Gentleman Reg and Mia Sheard. Hardly believable considering their long career, their self-titled six song EP is their first attempt at sharing their music with a larger audience. Produced and mixed by Night Sun's Chris Coleman at the beautiful Leopard Frog Studio and mastered by Marty Kinack (Broken Social Scene, Sarah Harmer), the record bubbles with elements of pop, folk, and chamber music that come together to create a rich and beautiful sound. And their relaxed, confident stage show makes for sweet pleasure all around. It's no surprise then that for Kyra and Tully, their time has come.

The Lady Racers - Christina Foster, Lia Dawson and Anna Robertson are a trio of talented young women from Kingston. All under 21 and performing all-original music (with one or two covers thrown in on occasion), they possess voices and stage presence beyond their years.

Formed in spring of 2003, they have since played at Blue Skies Music Festival and shared the stage with David Francey and others. Accompanied by one acoustic guitar, which they take turns playing, these young women share a passion for singing and songwriting that shines through and illuminates their thoughtful, sometimes melancholy, and always beautiful harmonies. Their self-titled, eight song album is the Racers’ first recording.

Derek Downham is a multi-instrumentalist from Toronto. He is an accomplished drummer/producer/guitarist/pianist and possesses a voice with both power and dexterity.

For several years, Derek fronted the Kensigton Market based group GRINDIG. With them, he earned nationwide critical success, plus Much Music and radio airplay from their self titled debut, GRINDIG (Shoreline/EMI). In 2002, they were voted "Best Independent Band In Canada" by Canadian Music Week.

Now, Derek has decided to utilize all of his musical talents, playing drums for THE HUGH DILLON REDEMPTION CHOIR (featuring the ex-Headstones frontman Hugh Dillon). The band's debut album was produced by Tragically Hip guitarist Paul Langlois and mixed by Adam Kaspar (Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age). With this combination, Derek's classic drumming is captured in full form.

Derek sits in with many of Toronto's finest bands and artists, such as By Divine Right, Blair Packham, The New Kings, Micheal O'Grady and many more.

He is also producing and writing for many up and coming acts. Not to mention, he is an accomplished session guitarist, performing on the upcoming Graph Nobel (Columbia) record, among others. He has also written commercials for McDonald's and Mr.Greek.

This year Derek has toured with Holy Fuck, hip-hop legend Beans and The Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir.

With every show, Derek gives his entire heart and soul. You can tell from the lake of sweat underneath him after each performance. Derek jumps at the opportunity to play live, and performed over 300 shows last year alone!

The enormous, inspired passion within his own music - and his ability to make others sound pristine - is a gift that very few possess. Once you experience him live, you will understand.

Erick Turnbull is widely considered one of the best acoustic guitar players in eastern Ontario. His live show features incredible guitar work and bizarre comedy, always leaving audiences astonished and begging for more.

  4. This Thursday, December 15, Elixir and Rock Crew present Chris Koster & The Lonely with special guest Bullmoose! Tickets are $6 and on sale now at Zap Records, Brian's Record Option, Chumleighs, Destinations, Renaissance, Elixir and online at www.rockcrew.ca

"The mind is its own place, and in itself

Can make a Heaven of Hell,

    A Hell of Heaven"

    - Paradise Lost, John Milton

Like John Milton, if there was no music Chris Koster might have been a poet. A peculiar, dynamic, and thought-provoking poet. A poet who at first read you may not fully understand. However, after awhile the poetry takes hold and soon you want to claim it as your own - thinking the pieces were written only for you.

While Koster's lyrics may be poetry he is a Musician. Chris is known as a singer because it is his commanding voice that people usually first notice. However, he is a complete musician - a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer.

Chris Koster's debut album, Secrets of the Lonely, was released in early 2005. Recorded at the Tragically Hip's studio in Bath, Ontario, Secrets of the Lonely is a passionate and at times haunting disc, which can be melancholy and hopeful all at once. Secrets of the Lonely reveals Chris' wisdom beyond his years. Listening to the disc one cannot help but feel that we are all alone; we come into the world alone, we will leave it alone, but it is the interactions with each other that allow us to live. Maybe that is one of the Secrets of the Lonely.

The album showcases Chris' strong songwriting abilities with skilfully crafted songs. Through his songs Chris reveals that he understands people; he understands you, he understands what it is like to live, as we all do, alone, inside our heads.

Secrets of the Lonely contains 14 original songs, a cover of Prince's "When U Were Mine", and a track that is just a minute of silence (perhaps placed on the disc to allow some listeners to catch their breath and others time to reflect). It is not surprising that Koster covers Prince - like the American music icon, it is difficult to label Chris as a specific genre of music. In addition, similar to Prince, Chris plays numerous instruments on the album and frequently is the only performer on a song.

Performing with both a five-piece rock band (dubbed The Lonely), and as a solo act, Chris delivers unique, compelling, and stimulating live performances. Chris is capable of seamlessly tying together rock, folk, and pop into a distinct ear-catching sound. His music, powerful voice, and engaging lyrics are the attraction, but his on-stage humor and charisma make live shows unique and gratifying.

Listening to the Secrets of the Lonely reveals how Koster's songs can speak to all of us, but maybe more importantly, how they speak for themselves.

Bullmoose is a dynamic trio, originally from southeastern Ontario but currently based in Montreal. Bullmoose is lighting up stages east and west with its brand of loud rock and roll with hints of funk, blues and other traditional styles. With the release of their independent full-length debut entitled Lessons Learned, recorded at Studio Piccolo in Montreal Bullmoose has taken to the highways to promote the work.

Bullmoose thrives on playing live. With a combination of energy and honesty on stage, and a refined yet raw 3 piece sound with plenty of vocals, it's no wonder audiences and critics alike have taken fondly to Bullmoose.

…“Bullmoose, a three-piece band based out of Montreal, has a classic rock sound, but with strong elements of blues and funk. Take a little Led Zeppelin, a little Van Morrison and a whole lot of skill and you’ve got Bullmoose." - Queen’s Journal

With recent shows at the North By Northeast festival in Toronto, and inclusion on the Emergenza Canada CD compilation, Bullmoose is fast taking a place on the Canadian rock map.

  5. nice ... i just finally found a good digital source of my first show, darien lake 97. The Kesey bit in the second set isn't overly worth hearing ... but the post-Hood jam turns me to mush every time. Plus a sick sick Antelope closing the first set.

I recently got this show (the one this thread is about) again (replacing my charming cassette) and was quite pleased. What a killer year.

  6. Rock Crew Productions and Elixir Nightclub (14 Garrett Street) are very proud to present Priestess and The Illuminati, with special guests Chubbie, on Thursday, December 8. Advance tickets are $6 and on sale now at Brian’s Record Option, Zap Records, Chumleighs, Destinations, Renaissance Music, Elixir, or online at www.rockcrew.ca

“Buzz building. Tight, heavy, punishing. This Montreal band has urgency, huge hooks†- Montreal Gazette

“Okay, Montreal, you were right about these guys – they totally bring the rock and do it with style†– NOW Magazine, NNNN (4 out of 5 ‘N’s) review of Hello Master

“…with the wallop of this debut, they prove that big things are in store. Gas-guzzlin’ rock gets tangled up with some serious songwriting†– Montreal Mirror, Disc of the Week

“Montreal hasn’t heard a straight-ahead, metal-edged, monstrous melodic rock band like this, well, ever… ‘Hello Master’ is solid the whole way through with far too many stand-out tracks to list†– Hour Magazine, 4.5 / 5 stars

Having just released their debut album, Hello Master, to raunchiously raving reviews across the country, Montreal’s balls-to-the-wall Priestess are hitting the road to give you their own live version.

"I like Priestess a lot. To me, they epitomize the escape from banality and redundance in present day rock'n'roll without pretense or gimmickry. It is the positive intensity and true passion with which Priestess conveys a distaste for the mundane that has already built her a reputation as a force to admire and to reckon. Along with guitar riffage powerful enough to brand itself into brain tissue, this band achieves pure sonic bliss through genuine heaviosity and uncompromized melodic hookery."

The Illuminati are not a typical modern band. There is no gimmick. There is only the consuming roar of elegantly crafted rock music. Taking their name from the shadowy secret society purported to control the world, The Illuminati are the majority share of the now-defunct garage metal band Tchort.

They offer a refreshing return to musical virtuosity - conjuring wild spectres rock 'n roll's greatest legacies. Sneaky details like moments of metal-blues fusion and impeccably written noodley jazz codas recall a time before today's genre-bound constraints. It is time to expect more music. It is time to return to a sense of wonder. It is time for The Illuminati.

Chubbie was one of Kingston’s strongest local acts. They relentlessly worked the punk and indie rock scene in Ontario and Quebec, and were featured on Ottawa’s The New RO, and in the Ottawa Citizen. Chubbie won X-FM’s “Women Who Rock†contest in Ottawa while gigging to support their first EP “The World’s A Bitch Todayâ€. The EP was recorded in Kingston and released independently. They broke up a while ago, and just got back together in October with members of I Hate Sally and The Massacre.

  7. Rock Crew Productions and Elixir Nightclub (14 Garrett Street) are very proud to present The Intangibles, Here & There and Twelve34 on Thursday, December 1. Cover is $6 at the door or in advance at www.rockcrew.ca

Here and There has its early roots in a collection of acoustic songs written by vocalist/guitarist Dan Rochester, who was later joined by guitarist Andrew Terry as the two played a handful of acoustic open mics and began to work out the songs. Soon after this, Dan's brother Matt joined the fold playing drums, and the songs began to take on new forms. Finally, Michael Terry, Andrew's brother and Dan's friend since childhood picked up the bass guitar to round out the group. Since then the foursome has developed a unique rock sound with jam elements drawing from a diverse range of musical influences including Led Zeppelin, Jeff Buckley, Tool, Radiohead, Dave Matthews Band, Matthew Good, Rush, Bill Hicks and others.

The band's defining feature is the dynamism of both their live sets and their recordings. From the melody-driven, Nietzsche-inspired Hold On to the haunting, brooding and vocally astounding Idle Hands, the band keeps audiences rivetted with a driving rhythm section, a clash of sound offered by the use of an electric and an acoustic guitar and soaring vocal work. Based out of Waterloo, the band will be touring Ontario and parts of Quebec starting in August of 2005. They'll be hoping to build provincially what they have already established locally: a loyal, grassroots following. "The band came together out of principles and philosophy," says guitarist Andrew Terry, "when we started to jam together there was a feeling of a message coming out, one of peace and understanding, but not without elements of our frustration about what we see as obvious shortcomings in our society. We want to help build a community."

Twelve34 is four distinct songwriters, collaborating to create the sound of a new generation of rock. Relying on the songs that have proven the test of time to influence their infectious ditties, Twelve34 is hitting the Canadian scene hard.

Packed shows in their workaholic hometown of Ottawa was no small feat. To separate from the pack, Twelve34 played every show with intensity and a solid performance, and garnering enough attention to sell out their first show within 6 months of their inception.

Once onstage, Twelve34 doesn’t hold any punches. Jasen Colson, with a vocal range as long as a Canadian highway, is further complimented by his progressive drum influences. Guitarist Eric St-Cyr delivers his string shredding performance without apology/mercy. Older brother Jason St-Cyr with his firm but loose bass groove always delivers a performance worthy of his aviators. Chris Amos on percussion sets the group apart from the ‘average rock band’, giving each song a reason to exist.

While each band member has a distinct role onstage, the recording process is opened up to allow each member to perform their multi-instrumental duties. Through the beauty of modern recording, Twelve34, who self-produces all recordings, have the ability to take their raw live sound and give each song a thick arrangement. Their first release, Stop Abusing Yourself, has been well received across the true north. Their follow up full length is expected to be completed by the fall of 2005.

Because so much of what makes the largely improvisational Holy Fuck project an exciting proposition happens spontaneously, capturing that anything-can-happen vibe in a studio setting is a difficult prospect. Evidently, Brian Borcherdt, Glenn Milchem, Kevin Lynn, Graham Walsh, Loel Campbell and Mike Bigelow were up to the task, as the crash 'n' bash frolic they documented over two days in Halifax and Toronto sounds remarkably lively for a canned session. Some tracks sound a bit more structured – even, dare I say, songlike? – but they've wisely left things raw and loose. Granted, it's not as good as seeing a Holy Fuck performance, but it'll do.

    from http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_10.27.05/music/ondisc.html

Holy Fuck might screw about with toy instruments, but when it comes to making a killer party record, they're not kidding around. Not entirely, anyway. You can hear the instrumental Toronto foursome (comprised of Blue Rodeo/Swallows drummer Glenn Milchem, King Cobb Steelie bassist Kevin Lynn and lo-fi effects assault team Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh) shouting "woo hoo!" and "yeah!" amid the live-to-tape recording of this thunderous and relentless faux-electronica breakdance bash of a debut, so you know they're definitely having a lot of fun with this -- as will you. Holy Fuck waste no time blasting into high gear on a rocket set for the centre of your pelvis, making it sway with a mixture of funky sensibility and chaotic urgency. As the swirling insanity builds and releases, you'll be powerless to avoid getting caught up in Holy Fuck's celebratory spasms

  9. Rock Crew Productions, Elixir Nightclub (14 Garrett Street), and CFRC 101.9 FM are very proud to present Holy Fuck with special guests Tomate Potate on Thursday, November 17. Advance tickets are $7 and on sale now at Brian’s Record Option, Zap Records, Chumleighs, Destinations, Renaissance Music, Elixir, or online at www.rockcrew.ca

Holy Fuck are a four-piece improv band built on strange electronics, pulsing bass and full-steam drumming. Comprised of past and present members of By Divine Right and King Cobb Steelie, Holy Fuck made good on their name and pedigree with a danceable, alcohol-fuelled blow-out. Driving like Trans Am and littered with chipmunk vocal manipulations and analog tape trickery. No laptop’s, no samplers, no synths. The electronic sound of Holy Fuck is improvised entirely with toy keyboards, live drums, live bass guitar, and a myriad of other toy gadgets your little brother used to play with…oh yeah… and a 35mm film synchronizer. In only a years time Toronto’s Holy Fuck have made numerous live recordings and played a multitude of festivals including CMJ, SXSW, Montreal Jazz Festival, NXNE, CMW, Halifax Pop Explosion, Pop Montreal, and most recently Coachella as backing band for acclaimed Brooklyn hip hop artist Beans.

Tomate Potate are grumpy, and noisy. We cut feet, sing and shout. Welcome to the new love-in. Everyone smile.
