  1. The crazy thing about the story below... I became friends with this guy about 3 weeks before his arrest. Played music and sang with him. Talked about stuff. Met him at Market Square and we chatted and hung out. He was a really neat person. Told me his name was Josh! And now he faces life in prison. He's on the FBI's most wanted list. Labelled a terrorist for what? For damaging logging equipment. SICK!

A beautiful and important person is going to jail for THE REST OF HIS LIFE - what's happened to us? ::

    FBI arrests alleged ecoterrorist

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- A fugitive radical environmentalist has been arrested by federal officials on charges of setting fire to logging and cement trucks in 2001, the FBI announced Monday.

Michael Scarpitti has been on the FBI's most-wanted list since disappearing two years ago. He is among four activists charged with setting logging trucks on fire on June 1, 2001, to protest logging on the slopes of Mount Hood.

Three other suspects were captured after one of them told a girlfriend about the crime, according to arrest papers. The girlfriend's father is a deputy state fire marshal.

Scarpitti is also accused of taking part in an April 15, 2001 arson attack that damaged three cement trucks at Ross Island Sand & Gravel in Portland.

Scarpitti, also known as Tre Arrow, has had connections with the Earth Liberation Front, a loose group of activists that the FBI has classified as an eco-terrorist group.

The FBI lists the organization as its No. 1 domestic terrorism priority.

Scarpitti first gained notoriety in July 2000 when he scaled a U.S. Forest Service building in downtown Portland and lived on a ledge for 11 days to protest timber policies.

In October 2001, he suffered several broken bones when he fell 60 feet from a hemlock tree where he had perched to protest a logging sale in Oregon's Tillamook County.

On June 1 of that year arsonists firebombed trucks at Schoppert Logging Co. in Estacada, a small town between Portland and Mount Hood.

Three suspects were arrested. One of them, Jacob Sherman, was sentenced to more than three years in prison in 2003 after pleading guilty.

Sherman "immediately began to cooperate" with investigators after his arrest, according to court documents, and pointed investigators toward others involved in the bombings.

Court documents filed by Sherman's attorney identify Arrow as "the leader and instigator" of the arsons.

Arrow "groomed" Sherman, the documents claim, introducing him to radical protesting. Sherman was a student at Portland State University at the time.

  2. I'd like to take this opportunity to send a big shout out to folk music at this time. I have really just discovered folk music in the last year and a bit, and the beautiful work of artists like David Francey, Gillian Welch and Gordon Lightfoot has really helped me become more in tune with my self, my land and my heart. Thank you, folk music!

  3. hey Caramel - this is going to sound ridiculous but rub your fingers on your nose. The natural oils will lubricate your fingers and cut down on the squeaking sound. I rub my fingers on my nose every time I play bass! Wacky eh?

    nub,

    keb :D

  4. Damn man, I feel your pain. I worked in the meat dept. at Thrify Foods on Saltspring Island when I was a kid. It was deeply disturbing and disgusting. Worst was cleaning the pork-carnage off the bandsaw of death. YUCK!

I hope you can find something new, for your own sanity's sake!! :)

  5. hey hey y'all,

It's Phishy K here with some neat news.

For those of you who don't know me, I am an electric bassist in Toronto. (www.fatbass.ca) I moved here from the west coast in September in hopes of launching a succesful music career. Anyways, about 6 weeks ago I joined a band (*MaryJayne*) and we've got our first gig coming up!

Please come see us at Club 279 on Wednesday Dec. 11th, and we're up at 10:30. There's 2 other bands joining us. Club 279 is above the Hard Rock Cafe at Yonge and Dundas in downtown T.O.

I think jamfans will dig our vibe. It's psychedelic altrocky stuff with awesome originals, great keyboards and vocal harmonies. AND it's at a really great club too, with video and lights and the whole works.

Email me if you want to! kev@fatbass.ca

    rock on everybody

    Kev [Cool]

  6. I dunno man, living in downtown Tdot, I find it alot easier to hate the Habs. Then again, I've hated the Habs since I was a wee laddie.

There's nothing wrong with the Leafs! They're just taking some time to get their shit together. I am really starting to like Eddie B.

As for the Sens... well, what's the point? Ottawa Senators, 2039 Stanley Cup Champs!

  7. Damn... damn, damn, damn.

These guys look hotter than heck. Tonight they downed the 'defending champs' in convincing fashion, 4-1.

I dunno about y'all, but I think this team is going to make some SERIOUS NOISE in the NHL not just this year, but for several years to come. They are hardkore physical, defensively responsible, and explosive coming across the blue line.

Vancouver has my vote for Best Canadian Team in the NHL. What do you guys think?

p.s. Markus Naslund is now leading the NHL in goals (and i think Cloutier is up there in wins for goalies)

  8. no way, they have to come hang out at my place between the 3rd and the 6th - Ottawa is too far away!

I am so jealous of these guys. I started a band with 2 of them 2 years ago, now I am all alone in T.O. and they are touring the nation nonstop *cry*

Poor me eh!! I just signed up with a new band though and we are going to rock the nation. Not jam music though, it's more extremely intense and psychedelic alt/original/rock.

Wish me luck [big Grin] We are called "MaryJayne"

  9. ahhh... the Wassabis.

2 of these guys are my best friends and ex bandmates from back home in Victoria, Alley Kat and Steve, the keys man and the drummer.

They are playing in Hamilton on Sun. the 3rd at the Casbah and at the CoZone on Wednesday the 6th. Highly recommended! They are a huge band and have been touring all across Canada. Really intense, amazingly danceable music. And maybe if I'm lucky they'll let me play bass for a house jam [Wink]

Please go see them and pack the Comfort Zone! They are totally worth it.

Oh to be reminded of home :~(
