  1. hey Meggo --- that "other drummer guy" you speak of is the famous Stephen Moore. Last year he was the guitarist and singer in my old band and he made the cover of Monday Mag! An all around good guy.

We started playing music together way way back in 1997 - jeez how time flies.

  2. Sorry meggo, I'm moving to Toronto at the end of August! Maybe i'll pass you somewhere on the Trans-Canada.

Any of you Victorians ever see Chameleon last year?

As for Victoria jam bands... the latest popular thing is the Wassabi Collective but personally I am not too excited about them. I've seen 4 shows, one was really good, the other three were fairly wanky. Anyways...

  3. When I was in a jam band last year, we found that smoking pot before shows was a bit of a curse, as it tended to make the drummer separate from reality and become alot less sensitive.

I also find that I can dance alot longer and harder with no pot in my system.

    But that's just me.

Meggo, are you in Victoria BC?

  4. Jaimoe, I would agree with you on Cloutier and Skudra actually... but only because of what I saw from Cloutier in the last 4 games of the Detroit series. He really melted away into averageness after that center-line shot from I think it was Chelios? That was too bad. I can't help but to wonder however if that was what he needed to push him to the next level. To learn that the biggest mistake, is to let a mistake mess you up.

As for the Sedins, yeah they are powderpuffs. What the Canucks need to do is get GINO ODJICK back to protect them!!!!

  5. I say more power to them. It's near impossible to make a living as a musician in Canada. As long as a band can morally justify a gig to itself, then it's fine.

Hopefully Happy Dan's Patchouli Collective 9 piece jam extravaganza will take this to heart and avoid playing at the next McDonald's grand opening.

  6. Sweet, what I wouldn't give to see Gilmour and Waters together again. Pink Floyd has got to be the coolest jam band that ever existed. Their music is so genuinely dark but uplifting at the same time. And what made it sweet was Waters' genius songs with Gilmour's genius guitar playing.

Nick Mason was cool too, what a wierd drumming style he had. Kinda like a drunk Ringo.

  7. hey guys,

Thanks for all your replies. There was some really good reality checks in there. I definitely know now that I can't make a living just gigging, unless I get a really really good gig.

Hopefully I can find something along the lines of teaching bass or working at a music store.

All I know is, I don't want to go back into the computer industry. I've had too much phosphorous beamed into my brain already! Ugh. Almost 5 years here at Sage Internet Solutions and I get a headache at least 3 times a week. It is time for a break!

That's why I said I wanted happiness, American Beauty style. The dude in that movie quits his high paying stressful job to work in a burger joint and be happy. It's a great one.

Speaking of movies, go see Minority Report. It's effing trippy. It's really good. Go see it!

    thanks again y'all

  8. Cool, my gay fighter-pilot stepbrother lives in Kingston!

My plan is to get to TO around early Sept, couch-surf for a month and find a place for Oct. 1st. So I will be staying in Oakville for a week, Kingston for a week, and downtown for a while too.

Phew, I bet house hunting in downtown TO sucks butt.

Rock and roll 4ever Ms Huxtable. You keep Willis and Arnold in order now, y'hear!

  9. Is it Phish? could it be Phish? uhhh, it be Phish? I'll sell my soul to the devil for it to be Phish? Anyone want my firstborn child if they can make it be Phish? I'll give a million dollars to anyone who makes it be Phish?

  10. hey, thanks Ms. Huxtable.

You know what's funny, Dr. Huxtable's bassist wanted ad was like the first thing I ever found when searching for musical opportunities in Ontario.

The thing is with me is that I've just struggled for so long here in Vic. I had a great jam band last year but just couldn't do it with my full-time work. Now it is time to follow my dreams!

Too bad my band never made it national. We were sweet. Our name was Chameleon. We used to do Down with Disease perfectly!

The time eventually comes for all things to move on, I guess.

Does Dr Hux. play in TO?

  11. hey man, do you live in the GTA?

I am wondering, is there lots of work available there? Have you worked in the city?

I don't mind working a day job. And honestly, I can survive on less than 25k.

I have been working full time for 5 years in the computer industry, making 35k a year, and while I have extra money, I am not happy. I want to be a happy dude, American Beauty style! [smile]

Any other Toronto musicians out there?

  12. hi all,

Thanks for your replies to my previous message. My question today is simple. I'm a musician (electric bass, vocals and djun-djuns) who is moving to Toronto in August. I'm tired of web design and looking to be a full-time musician. I have pro skills, experience, equipment and attitude.

    The question:

Is it possible to make a living as a musician in Toronto, or will I have to flip burgers or wrap burritos to pay my rent?

    Thanks all!

    special K

  13. Greetings

I am a bass player who is moving to Toronto in the middle of August. Once I get to town, I will be looking to groove it up!

I played in a jam band doing 12-15 gigs a month for most of last year. We were called Chameleon and were very popular in Victoria BC.

My bass style is 100% groove, and I like to put lots of heart into my notes. I've been playing bass for over 5 years and had my bass for almost as long. We are quite well bonded, her and I. I can solo if called upon but prefer to lay back. I'm an experienced and sensitive jammer.

Anyways, what I'm getting at is: If anyone wants to jam when I get to town, let me know!

Or, if anyone has any tips about living and playing in that huge city, please help me out. Thanks! [big Grin]
