  9. mostly having a great winter - living downtown so travel isn't much of an issue - I don't have a car so it's been transit and cabs - mostly hoping the snowfall doesn't hurt any of my upcoming shows! My opinion is usually that I will hate winter if I don't do the things that you can only do in the winter... skiing, skating, toboganning... that usually make it all worthwhile.

King Sunshine has been lighting dance floors on fire since 1998 as a highly skilled and electric live act. KS has redefined the concert going experience. With the release of their second album Second Movement in fall 06, King Sunshine is poised to branch out to new segments of music lovers worldwide. Experiences at Canadas largest music festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2005 and 2006, Ottawa Blues Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Toronto Harbourfront Festivals and Halifaxs Evolve Festival has brought KS nationwide recognition. Years of sold out club shows and underground parties have led to shared stages with music's finest DJs, including Theo Parrish, DJ Sneak, Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, Ron Trent and Little Louis Vega. King Sunshines raw explosive energy takes dance music off of vinyl and brings it to the live stage. Emulating a DJ approach by building up their climaxes and breakdowns, and mixing their songs together into one continuous seamless set of music. People have described their concerts as deep and moving and "a powerful, unforgettable, rhythmic experience". The weathers beautiful on the dancefloor! MAT THE ALIEN http://www.myspace.com/matthealien Let's clear something up. Technically Mat is not an alien. He was born near Manchester and moved to Canada in the mid 90's to follow his snowboarding addiction But that's where things get weird. On the flight over, the airplane was overtaken by what appeared to be a massive electrical storm over the Atlantic and was out of contact for thirty minutes and when it reappeared it was in essentially the same spot as before-." Alien contact? I don't know, have you ever heard Mat spin records? He had been dj'ing since 1998 and developed his style while working in his family's record store in Bury, England (opened by his dad at age 4, but it wasn't until after he arrived in Canada that his turntable abilities suddenly jumped to new heights. Heights later described by Knowledge Magazine as, "Awe inspiring. Some next level shit." "Who knows what happened on the plane?" he says. "I think If I can reproduce that alien sound , I should be able control minds and communicate through sound to people from all over the world." Mat has toured across the globe , pioneering 4-turntable club nights in Whistler and Vancouver, and with crates as deep as a black hole combined with mixing and scratching skills he is considered among the best by anyone who sees him , Mat was chosen to represent Canada and rock the party at Canada House during the 2006 Winter Olympics. He has produced many mix c.d.'s, released his debut self produced c.d. Downtime and been busy making music for T.V. show's and scratching on video games including N.B.A. street Homecourt for ea sports. Mix c.d. highlights are the 2002 C1RCA Presents Knowledge Magazine Mix CD, which showcased his ability to blend several styles of music seamlessly. Over 50,000 copies of the CD were distributed worldwide, to critical and popular acclaim. The follow up was C1RCA Presents C1pher 2004 which also featured DJ Dopey, the 2003 World DMC Champion and made big waves throughout the global d.j. community.Next up was a collaboration c.d. with u.k. beatboxer Killa Kela and next in line is a mix with the scribble jam 3 time champion Scratch Bastid. Mat has also changed the way people play records with "Mats Mats," slipmats for 45's allowing Dj's to scratch and cue 45 rpm records the same as they would a 12-inch, there is also Boca 45 (dynamo productions ) run of Matsmats At shows mats , pristine mixing of many genres and scratching techniques really does sound like it came from another world. Did Mat really get abducted by aliens that night,We'll never know but one thing is certain- Mat the Alien is capable of some out of this world shit and when Mat does find "that mind-control sound" the world will become a safer place. 15. Thanks everybody! I had one of the best birthday parties ever! Life is good! I'm sure that 2008 is going to be a great year for me. (2007 had it's ups and downs!) I definitely had a moment - "It's good to be me." So I was the musical director for the Bob Marley Birthday Tribute at Lee's Palace on the day of my birthday/ My parents, my brother and his fiancee, my sister and her husband plus my new girlfriend came out to the soundcheck and we had a great feast with the cast of the show which included my good friends from the Irie Band, my high school friend Mike Field on trumpet as well some of Toronto's best singers - Meghan Kelday, King Selah, Micheal Garrick, Organs etc... So after the feelgood pre-party people started coming in quickly and by the time we started to the show it was getting packed! Basically I got to rip it up on guitar all night, which is one of my favorite things to do period, especially to a wicked crowd who danced from song one at 10 pm till 2:15 am. My whole crew of friends from High School showed up (which was a pretty big surprise because I hadn't personally invited them to the show) as well as so many people from the Toronto Music Scene. Between sets I was getting a lot of compliments from my rifss and solos - someone commented that they saw the Classic Albums live note for note Bob Marley show and that the emotion I was putting into the guitar surpassed anything they saw at that show. After playing guitar now for 17 years - I fell like I'm at the top of my game. I was a bit frustrated trying to get all the musicians ready on to take the stage at the start of the night and after our break at midnite - Musicians can be like kittens. You can put them all in a room and they'll all wander off in their own directions. We also had a couple rewinds ~ which is when the singer stops the song and starts it again - the band recreated the sound of a record being spun back to the start of the song. Sometime it's "It's so nice - we do it twice" - but sometimes it's that the band started the song a bit weak - It can be a bit annoying - but it's entirely a Jamaican thing that both the bands and Djs love to do. Also we focused on Bob's lesser known material to a degree - I think the crowd would have liked to have us play Three Little Birds, Stirr it up and Buffalo solider instead of songs like Soul Rebel, Trenchtown Rock, Livey up Yourself. At the tail end of the night - our host introduced some singer I had never heard - and he gets up to the mic - while I'm bewildered - and says Natural Mystic - a song we've never played or practicied - we launched into it without any hesitation ~ all the while I'm realizing that someone has just ganged out show!!! All in all we had a great night - it was pretty much a sold out night at Lee's Palace - I got to rock out with the Rastas and we really started to get a good group sound for the new band I've rekindled called "The House of David Gang" Basically the rocky road of being in a reggae band in 2007 with our accidedn and the unstability of lead singer - led to he break up of the Irie Band in November. With the remaining members and in addition of two keyboard players, two lead/back up singers Meghan Kelday and King Selah and a horn section (trumpet / Trombone) we've reformed as a reggae orchestra with some great originals and very steeped in the music of the Wailers (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer). We've toured to Montreal, Peterborough and Toronto and we all felt like we accomplished something big. So it was great to see this band light up the stage with such confidence - we'd been rehearsing for 6 weeeks straight - and I thought we did great! I hope you all have birthdays as good as mine - something out of your wildest dreams!

  17. SATURDAY, MARCH 1st www.nufunk.ca presents... GALA NUFUNK FESTIVAL FINALE BONOBO (NINJA TUNE) - DJ Set ELIZABETH SHEPERD & MEDICINEMAN (CIUT 89.5 FM) REVIVAL (783 College St.) www.revivalbar.com $20 Adv. ($18 + service charges) $25 at the door Doors 9 PM SHOW 10PM– 4 AM @ www.Nufunk.ca, www.TicketWeb.ca, Rotate This, Soundscapes, Play De Record, Shanti Baba FACECRACK LINK: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=10070546086 NuFunk.ca is STOKED to bring Simon "Bonobo" Green to Toronto to help close off the NuFunk Festival. Bonobo's mixes travel the spectrum from jazzy and funky to ethereal and exotic. His first two albums on the Ninja Tune label received great reviews from fans and critics alike. His most recent release "Days to Come" was voted as the best album of 2006 by BBC dj Giles Peterson and his fans. http://www.bonobomusic.com http://www.myspace.com/sibonobo Setting the scene for Bonobo will be an energetic hometown crew. The beautiful Elizabeth Shepherd has gained acclaim both at home and abroad for her debut album "Start to Move" and the recent "Besides" collection of rarities & remixes (both on DoRight! Records) which have captured the ears of jazz tastemakers around the world including no less than Gilles Peterson. Elizabeth was nominated for nominated for a Best Vocal Jazz Juno Award in 2007. Her Trio features her sultry and funky vocal jazz and piano sound backed by the hard-swinging rhythm section of Scott Kemp (bass) and Colin Kingsmore (drums). http://www.myspace.com/elizabethshepherd Richard Martin, aka medicineman, is one of Toronto's most respected global fusion tastemakers. He hosts "No Man's Land", one of the most popular and long-running shows on CIUT 89.5 FM, airing Wednesdays from 12-2 pm. He is also the resident ethnogroovologist for Toronto's premier independent world music presenter Small World Music. Downloads of his show are available at: http://www.myspace.com/medicinemanradio ARTIST BIOS: Bonobo (Ninja Tune) www.bonobomusic.com www.myspace.com/sibonobo It never fails to amaze me how swiftly a moment of fortune can so easily become a noose round the neck. Especially in the oh so fickle world of the music biz. In the case of Bonobo the moment, or perhaps the year, of fortune came when he released his debut album 'Animal Magic', at the precise time that 'chill' was the buzz word on everyone's lips. Never mind the fact that, even on the evidence of those first efforts, he was a truly gifted producer, you can't beat the power of the buzz. As is the way of these things, the buzz became the murmur, and soon became the background hum, as endless chillout comps, ads, and media campaigns swamped the shore of our consciousness. A young Simon Green (for it is he who is the monkey king) refused to be dragged down by the lazy journalistic prose that labeled him 'chillout' and 'downtempo'. Far from it. He upped the stakes, and indeed, even stuck his neck out, moving from his original label Tru Thoughts to Ninja Tune, and set about taking things to the next level. Cos it's all about the levels with Bonobo. Not in a techy, studio kinda way, but in the levels of involvement with his music. On the surface there are the organic, pastoral atmospheres, the catchy melodies, the elements that caught people from his first album. You can engage with a Bonobo tune in that way if you wish, and will be well rewarded for it. But it's the deeper, slightly hidden levels that you should investigate, for they bring the greatest prize. It's these elements that he explored on 'Dial M For Monkey', as a greater focus on live instruments, the intricacies of rhythm, the darker shades of the soul, and almost a sleight of hand, that meant that you could be in one mood one minute, and the next you would somewhere different. 'Dial M For Monkey' showed the set of brass balls that Bonobo (like his namesake) had, and these would be tested again as he set about building his live band. He duly found the right musicians, self financing rehearsals, and fine tuning a live show that brought out the elements of his music that had hitherto gone largely unnoticed, as the band swung and rocked their way through shows at Glastonbury, The Big Chill, Jazz Cafe, and internationally exotic settings from Italy to Russia. He set about building his DJ style in the same way, refusing to conform to the preconceived ideas of a laid back style, and aiming headlong for the dancefloor, with a heavy mixture of hip hop, weighty jazz, broken beats, Latin, funk, and soul, with the occasional cheeky bit of psyche rock and drum and bass thrown in. Just to keep you on yer toes right? Now a DJ of international repute, Bonobo has played all over the world, including playing to huge audiences in the USA and Canada with Amon Tobin, a progress culminating in Ninja Tune asking him to put together a Solid Steel mix album. Bugger the lounge, lets dance. Now, with the expectations duly dispatched with the good hiding they deserve, the field is wide open for Bonobo to push himself even further, and we await the next album, due late 2005 / early 2006, with our minds well and truly opened to the possibilities. "Lots of live shit", says Bonobo."Strings, horns, drums and vocals. More energy and a bigger, heavier sound". Come on then son. Elizabeth Shepherd www.myspace.com/elizabethshepherd http://www.dorightmusic.com/elizabeth.htm Juno Award Nominated "Vocal Jazz Album of the Year" 2007 for Debut Album 'START TO MOVE' Voted #3 Jazz Album of the Year 2006 on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide BBC Radio 1 London Imagine a cold winter night in Toronto, walking past a small jazz club, when you catch through the folds of your scarf the warm deep grooves of a jazz trio playing to an intimate crowd. Welcome to the scene a fresh new sound from singer/songwriter Elizabeth Shepherd. There are times when something new comes along at once familiar and yet completely original. The album 'Start to Move' from the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio is just that. But what's more she has added her own unique blend of jazz-funk, soul, blues, and samba to the fundamentals of Jazz – improvising a deep driving bass from Scott Kemp, the swinging beat of the drum from Colin Kingsmore, and Elizabeth's playful piano and captivating voice to tie it all together. Recorded over the winter of 2005/2006, you can feel yourself with them, locked away in a small studio, protected from the cold winter night, pushing through track after track for that deep warm sound. Elizabeth strives to push the boundaries of what is considered conventional jazz to create a sound all her own. Raised by ministers of the Salvation Army, an early exposure to the sounds of the Army Band mixed with her love for house, disco, classical and hip hop, to lay the foundations of a soulful musician. Having trained extensively in conservatories from Alberta to France, and completing a degree in music from McGill University in Montreal, Elizabeth has emerged onto the Toronto jazz scene where she has already established herself as someone to be watched. Playing in some of Toronto's most popular spots, the Rex Hotel, the Montreal Bistro, Supermarket, and the Distillery District, and has grace the stages from around the world including London UK's Jazz Cafe twice within one year!. She has also appeared on numerous 'Live in Session' including Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show on BBC Radio 1 UK, and Matt Galloway's Here And Now show on CBC Radio One Toronto. As far as being a "jazz performer", Elizabeth does not count herself as one to be defined by a particular genre; her music comes straight from the soul, and is more than just what she does, but what she loves. The album, 'Start to Move' is Elizabeth's debut with Do Right Music, a label which seeks out new talent playing music that is out of the ordinary, and marks the inaugural release of the "Do Jazz" series. Co-produced with Do Right's label boss John Kong, Elizabeth has put together a mix of original tracks and timeless classics. Her lyrics sing to us her struggle to find a place in a dynamic yet crowded jazz scene, as well as drawing on stories of love and life. From the jazz funk of 'Reversed' to the samba beats of 'Melon', the hip hop influenced 'George's Dilemma' and the swinging modal of 'Roots', the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio has given us music that seems effortless in its perfection, displaying her talents and the remarkable chemistry she shares with her band to never compromise her style for those seeking tradition. "Proper vocal Jazz, a name to watch." Straight No Chaser, UK "This is hard-bopping jazz that commands you to move." NOW Magazine "Adding to the worldwide roster of new jazz artists who are bringing something fresh to an old blueprint" DJ Mag, UK "A contemporary jazz artist who isn't afraid to do her thing." Montreal Mirror "Refreshing in their lack of artifice....righteous grooves." Exclaim!
