  3. I heard that Mrs. Roy Orbison wasn't allowing a reprint of the first album, not sure if there's any truth to this though. V.1 is one of my favorite albums, almost every song on V.1 is a hit at campfires & house parties everywhere... When I played in country rock bands in Nova Scotia, we used to listen to the album on long trips to shows, and we always admired The Wilbury's arrangements and the use of multi-ple vocalists. Well it's Alright!! thanks for posting this!
  4. oh yes Femi is a legend... He was in his father's band for many years, and kept the band going when Fela went to prison. He has continued to carry-on the Afro-beat movement many years after his father's death. If you've ever seen him perform, you will know that his band & their energy is a must see. Femi continues to travel the world, spreading his message of "power to the people" and isn't afraid to challege or criticize his audience. He is the true heir to the Afrobeat throne! THIS SHOW IS GOING TO ROCK!!

  7. i did enjoy the poets, i helped them do one of their first Toronto show at the El Mocambo, they've gone on to do some impressive shows in their short live-span... I will have to check to see where they are at now...
  8. ok, The House Party ended up being one of the best nights of the tour. Partly because we were tight as nails, and were very surprised by the last minute turn out. The hosts, has insano amounts of beer on hand, and when all the bars let out on the streets, the house got packed. High Plains Drifter opened the night, with original HPD member James Dalzell on Keys, and Colin & Dropsi also on board. We were playing pretty quietly, we didn't want the house party to get busted too quickly. Irie Band played two sets, we played almost every song we knew! Thanks SJ for the good times! What a great music loving scene! Anyways the ride back was not really fun at all, we had not really slept for a week at this point, and if it wasn't for the all the weed we had on board, we probabbly wouldn't have made it home. Everyone was feelin the wear, no one was awake enough to even drive; we had to crash at a rest stop on the way back, just to recharge. Basically the tour was rough, we did a pretty good splash on the East Coast, we are determined to make it a prime market for the Irie Band. As anyone who has gone on a tour before knows, breaking into a new area can be tough. Luckily we did it and we'll live to tell.. We're booked back in Atlantic Canada on August 3rd @ Evolve. thanks for readin' jay www.irieband.ca p.s. we play next:
  9. last night was a blast, 420 party... whoa.. more on that later, tonight it's another adventure, we're here in Saint John and they've moved our show to a house party, it's a bootleg hot summer night all night party in SJ, the word is just getting out today... we just arrived and the beer and the jager are already out... gotta set up my amp... but a quick post to say.... hello! Cheers all!{
  10. Last nigt was a blast... We pulled into Wolfville, nova Scotia by noon, and we were beat tired, but we hung out at the promoter's house, just after setting up in this really nice restaurant / club vibe. After an afternoon nap, we had dinner back at the club, one of the best meals I have had in a long time, that venue "ON THE VERGE" has one sweet cook, who hooked us large, it was crazy feast! High Plains Drifter opened, which was a trio of myself & Irie Band's drummer Colin & bass player Uncle Dropsi... we did mostly a calypso & afrofunk set. Which was followed by a solid 2 hour Irie band show. We were joined by Verbal Warnin' ( a Halifax based reggae band http://www.myspace.com/verbalwarnin ) percussionists who joined in on congas, bells & tamborine. Dave Carmichael, a East Coast singer/songwriter type was there and also played some percussion. We had about 50 people out dancin' until about 2am, it was a small but enthusiastic crowd. Fast forward to an after-party with jamhub.ca kids and Acadia Students, we got pretty irie all night, crashing back at the promoter's pad, got up early for the drive to Antigonish. So here I am in the 'Nish, we're playing a 420 Jam at Pat's Place, it's exam times, but tonight should be an old school reunion; my old school St. F.X. & Evolve Festival conconspirators will be there. The band is feelin' a bit of the wear on the road, but we're all pretty optimistic about tonight and the rest of the summer.

Think Sublime meets No Doubt! With this formula they have become one of Toronto’s most popular offspring, drawing huge crowds everywhere they play! www.illscarlett.com King Sunshine King Sunshine illuminates disco roots and drop inflections of funk and dance rhythms, reinventing house music and driving the whole fusion over the red line. Imagine nine musicians transformed into one live DJ. Comprised of keyboards/synths, heart pounding drums/percussion, deep bass, slick guitar, intense electronics, hefty horns and soulful vocals. King Sunshine has been lighting dance floors on fire since 1998 as a highly skilled and electric live act. With the release of their second album Second Movement in fall 06, King Sunshine is poised to branch out to new segments of music lovers worldwide. www.kingsunshine.com The Irie Band The Irie Band is a Toronto-based reggae outfit that delivers dub riddims in a classic, Jamaican late 70s and early 80s style. Formed in January 2006, the band is fronted by seasoned reggae veteran, Steven Cogdell. For six months, the band played a weekly gig called Irie Tuesdays at Cervejaria Downtown, that honed them into a tight, heavy unit. www.irieband.ca KC Roberts Led by singer/songwriter/lead guitarist KC Roberts, this seven-piece band is cleverly composed of drums, bass, trumpet, saxophone and female backup vocals. KC Roberts has already garnered praise from such accomplished artists as Sass Jordan and Juno Award Winner Carlos Morgan (aka Carll Parkes). Look for more shows from KC Roberts at home and across the country in 2006. With more recordings also on the horizon, this band is just getting warmed up. www.kcroberts.ca Dr. Payne & The Diesease Formed in 2003, Dr. Payne and the Disease was originally only a last-minute replacement when guitarist Ben Payne found himself with a gig and no band. He assembled a group of his closest friends and threw together a repertoire of some of their favorite funk and jazz standards. After the performance, the response was so positive that the only logical choice was to continue with the band. www.thedisease.ca Keeping 6 Formed in 2003 by 4 lifelong friends; drummer Matt “Phatty†Wilkinson, guitarist Jason Wilford, bassist Dan Renwick and vocalist Bryan Hotchkiss, KEEPIN’ 6 is a band who’s high energy, and hook-heavy songs blend the best of influences ranging from The Police to Operation Ivy to the Foo Fighters. And truth be told, if there’s a band that can sonically bridge the gap between Billy Talent and Sublime, well that band is definitely KEEPIN’ 6. In late 2004 the band released their first indie CD/EP “KEEPIN’ 6 6-PACKâ€. Tracks from that release have been featured on EDGE 102.1 (Toronto) and charted at Ontario College radio. With another non-stop tour schedule already in the planning - and the imminent release of their debut album - 2007 will undoubtedly be the year that KEEEPIN’ 6 finds legions of new fans world-wide. www.myspace.com/keepin6 and more.
  13. Last night at The Phoenix was wikked! Big Ups to Dub Antenna for having us join them, it was a really great treat to be a part of that night, it was truly Fredericton's Reggae scene in the House. DJ Violet I interviewed the band on CHSR just before the show, and gave us some great energy and welcome to the East. Irie Band played a hour set, we did about 5-6 dubs, 3-4 originals and a couple of Bob Marley songs that had everyone singing... that was a special night for all of us. Irie Band was very impressed with DUB ANTENNA!! they had some great cover songs, really showed that they did their reggae dub homework, they are holdin' down the scene here!! Thanks to everyone who showed some love and bought a CD & T-shirt, every bit helps! After the show we headed straight for Wolfville, we're playing at a really nice & intimate venue called On The Verge, it's a restaurant/bar with some good vibez, clean and sophisticated look, we're just about to sound check, so more about it later.

  15. I'm really dissapointed in you Luke. We go way back and I think your behaviour lately has been so erratic & strange, I really am having a hard time with your constant accusations and cryptic posts. Our paths have crossed many times and we have shared ideas and good times. We actually met at a BNB show in Halifax at the Graywood, I was covering the show for The Dal Gazette. Those were great days in Halifax as we were all bubbling with ideas & possibility. As the Evolve phenomenon blew up, something changed and you have had some beef with our success. You've slagged the DJ line-up on Jambase.com, which Evolve Guy has been tireless working every year, and which was totally uncalled for. Evolve has a legacy of great DJs, and is known internationally for it's ground-breaking line up. ( Mark Farina, Doc Martin, Dj Dan, M0S7, Kid Koala, NERAV, Simply Jeff, Donald Glaude, Sonny D, Bassnectar -- these are some heavy names! You've slagged the event as a drug fest, you've personally criticized the staff. Like whoa! We go through this same argument every year. What motivates you to be so angry at Evolve? I feel you maliciousness is coming from a really dark place, and i do feel sorry for you. But I feel a lot of this stems from a festival you tried to get off the ground around the time of Evolve when you lived in Halifax. A corporate sponsored event, with great big headliners, you had talk of getting Phil Lesh... sponsors such as Greco, land in Truro... Then you had a breakdown in Halifax, that's when things started to get ugly. From my estimation you think that the world revolves around you, and that you are the grand master of the so called jam -scene. The reaction I get from you is that you hate the festival's success. From someone who is claiming to be the saviour of the scene, you actions are aiming more towards the catalyst of it's undoing. Here is the list of live performers who have played Evolve, Fans you make the decision is this is a professional, internationally appealing festival: Past International performers include: Michael Franti and Spearhead (San Francisco, CA) Medeski Martin and Wood (New York City, NY) Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra (NYC) Mike Gordon & Ramble Dove (Burlington, VT) The Slip (Boston, MA) Vorzca (Burlington, VT) Mark Farina (San Francisco, CA) Doc Martin (Los Angeles, CA) Steve Kimock (Bethlehem, PA) Surprise Me Mr. Davis (Northern California) Jungle Brothers (New York City, NY) DJ Harry (Boulder, Colorado) Notable Canadian Artists who have performed at EVOLVE include: The Trews (Antigonish) The Rheostatics (Toronto) Luther Wright and the Wrongs (Kingston) Bulfrog w/Kid Koala (Montreal) The Jimmy Swift Band (Halifax) Chris Brown and Kate Fenner (Toronto) Wassabi Collective (Nelson, BC) Burt Neilson Band (Thunder Bay) Stephen Franke and the Noises From the Toolshed (Victoria) Nero (Ottawa, ON) Tala (Montreal, PQ) High Plains Drifter Chris Colepaugh and the Cosmic Crew (Moncton, NB) The Chameleon Project (Toronto, ON) Caution Jam (Toronto, ON) Les Paiens (Moncton, NB) Hot Toddy (Fredericton, NB) Andru Branch & Halfway Tree Be Good Tanyas
  16. thanks guigys. what do you think of the line up?
  17. I'm only the messenger folks, I do not claim responsibility of Evolve's business management. I have been working as the festival's publicist for the past 8 years, and I am very proud of the festival's accomplishments & especially this year's line-up. Truth is this festival needs to happen so that they can afford to pay back their past debts (which are in excess of $30,000). This festival has played a large role in Canada in developing artists and the so-called jamband scene. The festival has had it's share of failures and successes. Let it be known that this festival has not made enough money for the Evolve Team to spend months organizing it, it is simply a labour of love, each year the festival attempts to out do itself, and sometimes that philosophy is the festival's undoing. The former head organizer of Evolve, J. Dorey, has stepped down from leading the festival. Evolve and the community would like to sincerely thank him for his years of service in harnessing this musical community. However many of the deals & arrangements that have not been kept are the result of his abscene from this year's process. If you have any questions or concerns about this year's Evolve please direct them to hi@evolvefestival.com I would say that last year's festival (EVOLVE 7) was, from a fan's standpoint, one of the best organized Evolve's yet. The site was perfect, plenty of clean rest-rooms, lots of food choices and 4 stages of entertainment... and much less of a drug culture vibe, acts such as The Be Good Tanyas, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra & Mike Gordon's Bluegrass Band Ramble Dove helped bring a level a maturity to the event that proved that Evolve is not a "drugged out rave," but a highly respected festival. In short, I am very proud of this year's line up and I very much am looking forward to making this year a success.
