  1. Both Vanderpark & Slowcoaster put on a great show! Vanderpark, certainly an under-rated band from Toronto, really shone last night as a tightly honed unit... Great vocals and special guest appearances by a smokin' sax player! Slowcoaster, now a potent power-trio, - delivering a stellar set including feel good and quirky moments... They had the bar in stiches when someone came onstage to "SHOOT THE BOOT" SHOOT THE BOOT VIDEO CLIP COMMIN' watch for Slowcoaster June 2007!!
  2. now in it's second incarnation at Toronto Island, i'm sure it's going to be a great show.. I was there last year and Broken Social Scene's set was killer... I also enjoyed the Strokes & Raconteurs.
  3. I saw them in Antigonish in 2003 - it was a really weird show.. it was like a Gun's and Roses' concert, everyone is there waiting for something to happen for about an hour, then he goes on and does a 50 min set. The best part of the set was when he did a rant about a new song he had written... it was about magic mushrooms... he just went off on this tangent and i really thought it was lost on the audience who were all about 40+.. I liked it. I don't remember if he did end up playing Rollin' Stone, but i do remember thinking that it was a waste of dough... dude is way past his prime.

During this time their energetic and improvisational live show has helped the band develop a cult like following throughout Canada and the U.S. They have performed 200 + shows a year for the past three years, selling out venues and packing dance floors across North America. The JSB sound is so original that critics and fans have come up with a new genre to define it - Rocktronica. Coming out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, JSB consists of Craig Mercer on guitar, vocals, and effects,Aaron Collier on keyboards and effects, Mike MacDougall on bass, and Nick Wombolt on drums. Each member brings their own strengths to a powerful sound which is greater than the sum of its parts. Their influences range from Daft Punk to Pink Floyd to Guns and Roses, and they meld aspects of these sounds together to create their original Rocktronica. JSB are currently touring in support of their third studio album, Weight Of The World. For more check out: www.thejimmyswiftband.com

  11. CATO is considered a EP.. it only has 5 or so songs.. this is their first full length studio album.. it's a great 'musical journey' they weave through some really great pieces.. funk, blues, soul, reggae ( - the song Spirit Guide is great! ) Shane Philip was down to play at CMW, he's flown back to Vancouver Island... hopefully we'll hear from him again, he was very good desipite sounding like a Xavier clone. I had a nice chat with him and he spoke about all the great acts that influenced him and those who really came up with the dig / acoustic / dance sound... Ash Dargon, Outback, Dr. Dige ... Xavier is the one artist who really took off with that sound.

  13. Stephen & Co. do some Rheostatics Covers, but mostly it will be a party, with Noises from the Toolshed starting shortly after the RHEOSTATICS end... the venue is only a block away from Massey Hall, so it is a easy walk to the venue. This is a show of Stephen's creation, as he is a huge RHEOSTATICS Fan, and has built a tour around this date, so he could make their last show. This show is for friends of the jam scene & extended friends of Noises From the Toolshed and a close place to get some drink post Rheostatics.

From Victoria BC, these west coast musicians are creating a large buzz, playing a blend of gypsy jazz, hard bop, and New Orleans zydeco/funk with occasional politically charged lyrics. Driven forward by virtuosic instrumental performance, lush soundscapes interspersed with intelligent vocals, and infectious grooves and hooks, and after over 150 shows in 2.5 years, the band has built a dedicated and sometimes frenzied fan base, including an email list that tops 2000 people. Their energetic live shows have earned standing ovations throughout numerous national tours while sharing stages with John Scofield, Antibalas, Jim Byrnes, Zubot and Dawson, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Jackie Washington, Little Feat, Ritchie Havens and Spearhead. Well received by audiences, SF & NFTT have also been called upon by promoters as an on-demand staple on the club and festival circuit, repeatedly packing rooms and performing at some of Canadas largest festivals including Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver Jazz festivals, Victoria ICA Folkfest, Islands Folkfest, Sudburys Northern Lights Festival, Evolve Festival, Seattles Northwest Folklife festival, Western Canada Music Awards, CMW 2005 and the National Campus Radio Conference (2004). Their debut album Songs for a Platinum Blonde Diner Waitress, currently on its second pressing and exceeding sales of 1700 copies, was nominated for Outstanding Instrumental Recording (WCMA 2004) and has been a media favorite, garnering glowing revues, spending months on college radio charts and receiving support and programming from CBC radio. plus special guests: BEYOND THE PALE www.beyondthepale.net Critically-acclaimed and award-winning, Toronto’s Beyond the Pale is one of the most exciting ensembles in the Canadian folk, roots, and world music scenes. Their explosive acoustic sound is inspired by a wide range of cross-cultural influences, from European folk styles (Klezmer, Balkan, Gypsy, Romanian) to contemporary and North American styles (bluegrass, jazz, reggae, funk, and more). They are known for their instrumental virtuosity, infectious energy, and unique repertoire featuring both original compositions and inventive arrangements of traditional material. With spectacularly dynamic and exuberant live performances, Beyond the Pale’s unique genre-defying sound has delighted audiences of all kinds at major music festivals, concert theatres, and clubs across Canada and the US. Beyond the Pale's most recent CD release "Consensus", an exciting and wideranging live set of all-new material, has met wide critical acclaim and received honours from the 2005 Canadian Folk Music Awards, 2005 Toronto Independent Music Awards, and Ontario Council of Folk Festivals 2005 songwriting Competition. Their debut CD "Routes" also received rave reviews from across the globe and was nominated "Best World Music Album" at the 2002 Canadian Independent Music Awards. Their recordings are heard regularly on folk and world music radio across North America and they have been featured in a number of national live concert broadcasts on CBC Radio. The group is now beginning work on their third CD, to be released fall 2006. this is a www.nufunk.ca production:

  18. To each his own, Cully, I really think you've pigeon holed Wassabi Collective into something they are not... Their show, as I saw on Saturday, was a mix of their electro funk & soul grooves, hip-hop, reggae, calypso, country & rock. I have been following the band through many incarnations and I believe this is the best line-up yet. I was blown away, the band has reached some new heights musically. Gisto has really come into his own; his song "Burn Corruption" is one of my new favorite songs..it's mix of dancehall & hip hop that could easily be the next new anthem. here's the link to the song: http://www.archive.org/download/wc2007-03-09.oktava.shnf/wc2007-03-09d2t01_64kb.mp3
