New Kingston consists of three brothers -- Tahir a.k.a. SLIM, (keyboards). Courtney (drums) and Stephen a.k.a SUKI (guitar) -- who fuse their reggae sound with modern pop, jazz and R&B music to create their own unique sound which they call "Reggae Crossover". Youthful and refreshing yet also seasoned industry veterans, New Kingston is led by its founder/manager and father Courtney LJ Panton.
New Kingston started off working with many artists such as Collie Buddz, Mr.Vegas, Morgan Heritage, Gyptian, Shabba Ranks, and many more, which with the guidance of their manager led to the creation and manifestation of "Reggae Crossover". The idea was to blend various influences in such a way that it would appeal to the widest possible audience, while still remaining true to their heritage.
Now sharing the stage with many artists in Europe the Americas and beyond, New Kingston released their second album, In the Streets, in 2010. Two of the album’s featured singles -- the title track "In The Streets" and "Pon Di Wall" -- have gained worldwide radio recognition. House of David Gang is a Toronto-based reggae outfit that delivers late 70s and early 80s style Jamaican reggae originals mixed with folk, soul, calypso, afrobeat, hip hop as well as classic reggae material of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. Formed in Toronto over 15 years ago, the band is fronted by seasoned reggae veteran King Selah – a fixture of the Canadian Jamaican Reggae scene. The House of David Gang takes its name from the legendary House of David afterhours on Queen Street West in Toronto, where artists from the city's burgeoning reggae scene would meet to jam until sunrise.
In the last several years, "The Gang" has been one of Canada's busiest touring reggae bands. Their annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute and Food Drive tour has become a staple of the winter music calendar across Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. In Toronto, hundreds of reggae lovers come out for their springtime Original Wailers Showcase and Peter Tosh Tribute. House of David Gang has performed in front of thousands at the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, Atlantic Jazz Festival, Evolve Festival, Nufunk Festival, The Word On The Street, Ottawa Reggaefest, Toronto Freedom Festival, and more. My wife has turned into a fanatical Barr Brothers fan and brought out some of her friends from Columbia U to the show last night at le Poisson Rouge in Greenwich Village.
They played some new songs and had their opener violinist Kishi Bashi (of of montreal) play a couple of tunes which they did "bluegrass style" with one room mike.
I enjoyed their show at Joe's Pub a little more... it wasn't as big a crowd, but you felt they were a little more at ease and spoke more on the mic. At that particular show Sarah got more time to flex her harp skills, especially in a duel she did with Brad.
The show last night really seemed like Brad Barr was the star of the show, he was directing the band and when he wasn't leading the band it seemed a little unfocused. Andrew did get some time to do a very interesting drum / noise solo which he had a bicycle tire and he bowed the spokes like a violin and played with a drum stick in the other hand.
The band just got back from a UK tour where they were showcasing - I think they're still climbing and building their audience. Judging by the audience of mostly older 40+ - they are tapping into a NPR Adult contemporary crowd and broadening their reach.
I also saw Joe Russo drinking some beer in the corner. At the Joe's Pub show I saw and met Don Was, who is a big fan, we might see him involved in their next studio release.
The improvisations that Brad took last night really showed his African Guitar sensibilities - more rhythmic & melodic than his work in the Slip. They also brought a Neil Young folk rock sound out a couple of times that along with their strobe light show was very explosive.

I just caught the band last wednesday in New York at Terminal 5 - first time seeing them and I was blown away at their stage energy. You guys are going to have so much fun!

Using live traditional instruments, NFO play a 21st century fusion of jazz, funk, electronica, jungle, and dub step. Much more than simply crossing every conceivable genre boundary, Ninja Funk combines digital effects, psychedelic visuals, and theatrical costume to enhance an already epic live show. They've toured Eastern Canada and parts of Chile and have played nearly every major live music venue in Toronto (Phoenix, Virgin Mobile Mod Club, Sneaky Dee's, Lee's Palace, the Horseshoe Tavern, El Mocambo, Yonge and Dundas Square,etc.), as well as showcased at Nuite Blanche 2010.
'BYLL GR8TS' is Mikey Palermo, a young producer based out of Toronto. Mikey’s musical journey started in early 2009, as “Koala Kids!†He used Koala Kids! As a method to find himself as a producer. He settled on the 8-bit sound of a Nintendo Gameboy equipped with the software LSDJ after experimenting with various mediums. He then switched his name to ‘Guiding Light’ for one show. Having a hard time finding a name to suit himself as a person and his music, he settled on the ridiculous; ‘BYLL GR8TS'. Putting out his first release under his new alias; “M!CH▲3L$0F+†in October 2011, it seemed he has found himself. Paired up with his super hip "manager" Nikki he is on an unstoppable path of destruction.

Five Alarm Funk is a horn powered, percussion fuelled sonic and visual assault. For more than six years the band has brought their relentless and unforgettable live show to clubs and major festivals across Canada and the United States. The band on stage is an unstoppable orgy of energy. Ten musicians perform intricate and airtight arrangements with delirious dance moves and full on headbanging. Gatin has made her own mark in the indie-roots scene with her sincerity and intriguing image and sound. Her last mini-album Time Will Change Us furthers Gatin as a powerful songwriter and songstress, blending her genuine roots music with a modern European romanticism and Canadian indie music. With accordion trills and gypsy thrills in abundance, Gatin has found a way to encapsulate the romance of Paris streets and the rawness of her hometown in Canada's prairies on musical recordings in an effortless manner.
There's no reason to wonder why; Gatin grew up in the snows of Whitewood, Saskatchewan, learning piano at the age of four and singing before she could speak. Her creative choices to tour by train, write music in a cabin in the woods, and her other life as a visual artist, come through in her dreamy, rich style. With handclaps, foot-stomps and tambourine her music will make you travel with its picturesque instrumentals of the open road right by her side.
"We’ve done everything as musicians traveling across Canada. I have stayed with old anarchist hippies billeting us in the forest with no electricity, slept in the van on the side of a mountain, filmed indie music videos in the streets of Toronto in the pouring rain, and a music video in a hail storm in the Exchange district of Winnipeg. Anything can happen and it usually does."
With the release of her first full-length album Broken Tambourine, Gatin reached Earshot's Top 20 Canadian folk/roots chart. And has since played hundreds of shows in support of the record in places as diverse as living rooms and aboard a traveling train, serenading the passengers. She has earned notable attention from CBC Radio all across Canada, drawing comparisons of artists such as Joni Mitchell, KD Lang, and other greats.

Join us at Lee’s Palace on May 26 as we welcome Vancouver’s Five Alarm Funk. Rockin’ funk grooves and delirious dance moves are the name of the game for this mighty 10-piece band - their horn and percussion fuelled shows have obliterated clubs and festivals across Canada and the United States for nearly a decade. Promoting their latest album, Rock The Sky, this is a chance to catch a true funk spectacle in action.
With a deep vintage blend that’s always fresh, Toronto’s The Soul Motivators channel slick dynamite soul, brooding exotic funk and the hip-hop flair of classic breaks.
