There aren’t many artists who keep their cool well into their fifth decade in the business, but R&B veteran Lee Fields is one. After over 40 years of of touring the world with his signature raucous yet tender voice, the music he’s making today is the best of his career.
Fields’ new album with his band The Expressions, Faithful Man, will be released March 13th on Brooklyn’s Truth & Soul Records, a label which reinvents the Motown-style soul factory for a brand new era. The album interprets and pushes the formulas of great soul - thanks to Truth & Soul producers Jeff Silverman and Leon Michels and the high level of musicianship of everyone involved. These are the same individuals that co-wrote, produced, and played on Aloe Blacc’s global smash I Need A Dollar, and have provided the backdrop for records by El Michels Affair, Adele, Liam Bailey, Ghostface Killah and Jay-Z, to name a few. Faithful Man is Fields’ follow-up to the well-received 2009 album My World (Do Right/Truth & Soul).
Born and raised in the small town of Wilson, North Carolina, Fields spent his teenage years singing in church and listening to the classic sound of ’60s Memphis. By the late sixties, Lee was touring with foundational funk bands such as Kool and the Gang, Sammy Gordon and the Hip-Huggers, and Little Royal. In fact, Fields was nicknamed Little JB for his similarity to James Brown. From those beginnings, he’s created a sound that’s all his own.
With a catalog that ranges from funk to lo-fi blues, to contemporary Southern soul and collaborations with French house DJ/producer Martin Solveig, Lee Fields has done it all. With A Faithful Man, he takes it right back to the old school, with a modern take on a vintage sound, telling tales of love, heartbreak and blues in the time-honored way. And i f there were any doubt at all, take heed of Lee’s own words: “Take it from me,†he says on one track, “I still got it.â€

Maylee Todd is fast establishing a worldwide reputation as one of Canada’s most exciting young performers. With a quirky and charismatic stage presence, Maylee delivers an incredibly diverse repertoire of soulful indie-pop tunes — often inspired by tropical grooves, featuring such obscure instruments as the Paraguayan harp & laced with both infectious humour and a performance art aesthetic.
In 2010, Maylee released her debut album “Choose Your Own Adventure†on the Do Right! Music label in Canada, and quickly became an artist to look out for. The album has received glowing reviews from the likes of NOW Magazine and the Globe and Mail. Its lead singles ‘Summer Sounds’ and ‘Aerobics In Space’ have been played internationally on J-Wave Tokyo, Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio 1 London, and Radio Nova in Paris; ‘Aerobics in Space’ was featured on the limited edition Do Right Serato CV Pressing in June 2011 which quickly sold out. She has shared the stage with the likes of Janelle Monae, Aloe Blacc, Esthero, Little Dragon, and The Budos Band. In December 2011, Maylee will be performing a headline showcase at the prestigious Transmusicales Conference in Rennes, France.

Pretty wild show last night - probably my 6th time seeing the Allmans - but here in NYC at the incredible Beacon Theatre was really great. I ended up at a Allman Pre-party - open bar just down the street and got to meet a ton of Allman Fans and Fanatics, including Allman former tour manager Kirk West and editor of the Hitting the Note Magazine.

In the last twenty years, the movement of Canadian independent music has seen fluctuating trends, the rise and fall of numerous venues and accelerating media train of possibilities. One stubborn child of homegrown descent was born and raised in the Hamilton music scene, and set out to make their mark in Canada and the U.S. alike: The Fat Cats.
With a truly genuine and original sound, the music itself has simple demands: just listen, and dance.
Not to be pigeon-holed by any particular style, The Fat Cats have made significant inroads within the “Jamband†genre, not only for themselves, but for a collection of other bands as well by creating an accessibility to the scene that reaches a larger group of music fans. Often being revered as the pioneers of the craft in Canada, the free flowing and uninhibited style of playing has been a specialty of the band since their inception. The everlasting chemistry between the players has kept this ideal blooming throughout their history, and forges the future of their unmistakable sound and groove.
The five-member unit is fuelled by a classic combo of guitars, bass, keys and drums. While the tools are common to the trade, the Fat Cats have navigated the music to open waters, sailing on wood, wire, reed and skin. Always maintaining an organic nature that pays homage to many great singers and songwriters, the sound takes on an electrifying groove that draws on all popular genres in the last 60 years. Live looping phenomenon Sam Klass is ready to take on the 2012 festival season, coming off huge momentum from a fall and winter of high profile performances, ground-breaking technical development, and an outpour of inspired music writing and production.
2011 was a banner year for Klass, having launched his first full length all live-looping demo "One Track One Take" to the world, produced by Kevin Park of The New Deal. His fast paced, heavily improvised, no-safety-net approach to live-looping has been generating wild reactions (mostly dancing and/or gaping mouths) from concertgoers and industry people at shows all over. Klass is at the forefront of next generation looping techniques, surpassing his influences in what he achieves on stage: high energy, fluid creations that fill the spectrum of an entire band. Everything Sam does is created in the moment using guitar and beatbox with digital and analog effects, making each show a unique experience.
Noteworthy opportunities have come quickly since Klass' debut as a one man operation back in November 2010. He has opened for high level acts like The New Deal, Charlie Hunter, Marco Benevento, Zach Deputy, Daniel Wesley, Rebel Emergency, The Fat Cats, Surprise Me Mr. Davis, Maylee Todd, and even Killah Priest of Wu-Tang. He has played at a number of festivals, including Come Together, The Junction, Supercrawl, It's Your Festival and more.
Combining elements of rock, funk, jam, hip-hop, jazz, reggae, and electronic music, with original song writing and characteristic instrument style, Klass has carved out his own musical identity through years of introspective writing and good, old fashioned instrumental discipline.
Sam's newest work, "Fluid Identity" is set to be released in May 2012. Teaming up again with Kevin Park, the 6 track EP combines Sam's live capabilities developed through the creation of "One Track One Take" with the production skills he honed through the development of his first release "The Last Names" (2009). Hey Guys,
quick update on NYC. Had a great tour with the House of David Gang to the East Coast, saw lots of familiar faces in Montreal, Fredericton, Saint John & Halifax.
Things having been going well. adjusting to this huge huge city. Unfortunately we just got our car broken into - I left a bag tied up in the back, it was only a bag full of cassette tapes circa '95.
Caught so many great shows including Umphreys' McGee, Galactic, Steele Pulse, The Impressions (Curtis Mayfield's original 60's vocal trio) backed by members of the Dap Kings, Soulive w/ John Scofield & Luther Dickinson.
Most exciting has been working at Relix. We've been treated to lots of in office performances by the likes of Good Old War, Howlin' Rain, Bahamas, Little Barrie, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds and a hang out with Jaimoe from Allman Brothers.

I'm looking forward to being back, but also to get an idea of the vibe on the street - this election scandal is really creeping me out! I think they are more accustomed to scandals here in the US, this one seems like a big shocker!
One of the reason I'm even here is because my wife is in climate science, and any climate research money has been cut by the conservatives, probably to help their case for the Oil Sand development.
Climate Science has taken a huge hit in Canada, and with out research money scientist are moving abroad where they can find programs to support this important climate research. In the 2011 Conservative Budget $35 million was promised to “strengthen Canada’s research advantage†in environmental science. That money has just not materialized.

Hailing from Seattle, Sawka was initially drawn to electronic music by the sounds of Dieselboy, LTJ Bukem and Roni Size. Pendulum edge even closer to super-group status with the news that world renowned electronic drummer Kevin Sawka – better known as KJ SAWKA – has joined the band. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, dBoom was introduced into music at an early age,
and more than 13 years ago, he began his venture into d.j.ing while living in Europe, playing at underground squat parties and raves before returning to Canada. His musical tastes range from broken beat Bass music, dubstep, glitch hop, funk and hip hop, to minimal techno and world beat and recently he’s shown off that taste at the successful weekly known as Archi-Textures, the Promise NYE party and various CirQlar and Suma events over the years.

Make It Funky founders Farbsie & Mickey D start out the night with a blend of funky beats that Make It Funky is known for. Farbsie has been spreading the funk gospel and grooving dancefloors across the country. Fusing funky breaks with mowtown sounds, hiphop, calypso, reggae, and classic rock while Mickey D will drop funky house and breaks always heating up the dancefloor.
