Coming off one of their biggest years to date, Canadian Live-Electro icons THE NEW DEAL have decided to call it day. With 10 records released and well over 1000 shows performed since the bands inception in 1998, tND has made an indelible mark as pioneers in the art of performing electronic music completely live and in real time. The band is signing off after a great final year of shows in their favourite North American cities.

So then, why stop now? tND’s drummer, Darren Shearer explains “Looking at the current musical climate, we realized that weren't going to continue to be able put out new records every year and keep up the 80+ show touring schedule that is required of bands in our genre. It didn't feel fair to our fans, and wasn't the way we wanted our band to evolve. tND has always been about being creative in the moment, but we had gotten to the point where we needed either give it our all or move on. It feels right to end off here.â€

tND began out over 13 years ago as an anomaly, a hybrid of electronic and live, capturing the essence of electronic music for real, and on stage. Now, there are literally hundreds of bands across the U.S. emulating that same idea, and with dubstep and electro on the rise, even more groups are surfacing, continuing to push this once fringe, very underground style of music even further into the pop realm. In 2001 SPIN magazine called the New Deal "The Kraftwerk of the new Millennium", but it has taken over a decade to see what this band has been a part of creating, as dance music now reigns in the clubs and the airwaves.

What’s next? Dan Kurtz will continue recording and performing with his mega-hit pop act “Dragonetteâ€, Jamie Shields will continue to play super-dad while scoring film and television music for his company “Studio Catâ€. Darren will be going west, where he has landed a gig in Los Angeles in film post- production.

The New Deal will mark the end of their career with six special shows, ending on the legendary floating music festival, “Jamcruise†that will set sail to Jamaica and Haiti on Jan 9. The band will play their last show in the Caribbean to over 2500 lucky sea-goers, and it will be a great end to a journey that began at a basement-level after-hours club in downtown Toronto over 13 years ago.

  2. Yeah we're pleasantly surprised by the size of our place. It's subsidized by Columbia University... so it's in our price range. The woman who showed us the place, said apartments this size usually go for $3,000 USD! whoa nelly!

We're at 120th & Broadway - it's called Morningside heights, we're just south of Harlem.

Thanks Velvet, Northern Wish, Deranger, Backbacon and Shainhouse, I'm excited about the move. Not sure exactly what I'll be doing, but something along the lines of what I do now.

Thanks everyone who's supported my shows, bands and promotions. Much love.

here's the poster for Saturday's show:

The New Deal has decided that 2011 will mark the end of a spectacular 12-year career.

    A note from the band:

It has been an amazing run for the band and we appreciate the loyal and dedicated tND fanbase across North America and Asia. Our individual lives have taken very different paths with family, living abroad, and other various projects. We have come to a point where the time and commitment that it takes to maintain our band at its best is no longer possible. As a group, we’ve never been known to go halfway, so we have decided to end things with a great run of summer and fall shows that we hope to be the best yet.

We're looking forward to this very special hometown show in a big way. Our fans have been fantastically devoted and supportive, and we hope to give them a final performance that will be truly memorable.

hope to see you! - TND

    ROY AYERS

Vibraphonist/vocalist Roy Ayers is among the best-known, most loved and respected jazz/R&B artist on the music-scene today. In his 40-plus years as a vibraphonist, Ayers has produced a string of soul and funk classics, like “We Live In Brooklyn Baby†and “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,†that has arguably made him the second-most sampled musician in hip-hop, after James Brown. You may have heard snippets of his music in songs by 50 Cent protégé Tony Yayo (“Fake Loveâ€) or A Tribe Called Quest (“Bonita Applebumâ€). But while the exposure of his extensive catalogue is enough to boost any man’s ego, the 68-year-old Ayers remains humble and busy.

Known as the Godfather of Neo-soul, Ayers continues to bridge the gap between generations of music lovers. In the 60’s he was an award-winning jazz vibraphonist, and transformed into a popular R&B band leader in the 70's/80's. Today, the dynamic music man is an iconic figure still in great demand and whose music industry heavyweights, including Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, 50 Cent, A Tribe Called Quest, Tupac and Ice Cube.

Ayers recently recorded with hip hop artist Talib Kweli (produced by Kanye West) and jazz/R&B singer Wil Downing.

    IAN KAMAU

"Distilling the many elements laid out in those previous efforts, the new long-player finds the gifted wordsmith varying his ever-present, analytical diatribes that in the past were notably held at arm's length with a series of more personal tales, balancing his expressions of the world's struggles with those of his, to welcome effect.†~ review of Ian Kamau’s 2011 EP ‘One Day Soon’ by Kevin Jones, Exclaim!

Ian Kamau is a writer, producer and a graphic/visual artist, born and raised in Toronto to Trinidadian parents who are renowned documentary filmmakers. He grew up around ideas, information, education and art. Music and art has taken him around the world --from painting murals in downtown neighbourhoods in Toronto, to volunteering with youth hip-hop projects in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Nairobi to working with the Royal Conservatory of Music.

    BADBADNOTGOOD

Students in Humber College’s world-renowed jazz program, 20-year old Torontonians Matt Tavares, Alex Sowinski and Chester Hansen are envisioning and bringing to life a different take on rap music. Or, if you’re a jazz fan, a different take on Bop music. BadBadNotGood could easily be described as the band that brings Jazz lovers and Rap lovers together under one roof, appreciating each other’s genres.

What started as an afterschool jam session quickly grew into much more. Bonded by a love of 40s, Hip-Hop and a disdain for traditional Jazz, BadBadNotGood are pushing to the forefront of modern music. Whether it’s doing interpretations of infamous thug emcees such as Gucci Mane or of 90’s legends A Tribe Called Quest, rap music has never sounded so different, so fresh, yet so familiar. Their talent is quickly being recognized across North America by the likes of LA Weekly, Exclaim and Prefix.
