    Mail ordered yesterday. Decided to make it simple and only go for GA Pit tickets for each of the 3 nights. It is a crazy process and it makes no logical sense to order tickets this way in 2015, but I thought I'd give it a go for nostalgic reasons. And I'm hoping the "craziness" results in an increased chance of scoring tickets, as people opt for saner and easier alternatives. Given the hype, this is going to be a tough ticket.

  7. Fate of Can Jam?

    A fun discussion thread to skim through 8.5 years after it happened!  Pretty tired right now but here is some input before my head hits a pillow:

     

    What is the state of Can Jam music? I don't know, but my guess is (almost) all of the musicians who were playing 8.5 years ago as part of the Can Jam community are still playing music in some capacity. Maybe jam music, maybe not. And I'm guessing a mix of genres and styles for many. Similarly, jam music fans from 8.5 years ago still love live music. They might go out to see less of it for various reasons (e.g. family and work commitments), but they are still fans of live music. And I'm guessing that they are still fans of jam music, but their tastes have grown more varied.

     

    I'm glad that I finally finished the song "Don't Do It For The Money" that I started 8.5 years ago and discussed in this thread! Yeah, sometimes it takes me a while to finish a song! Hope to get it recorded at some point well before another 8.5 years pass by!  I'm currently playing some music with Ricky Neu (Diesel Dog, Stumbleweed and others) and Dave Voigt (Harvard Mouse), focusing on original songs.  Not a lot of gigs, but am excited to be part of a show in Kitchener on Sat. Feb. 28 with two other acts (Stephen Lewis and Dan Walsh & The Passive Resistors. Walshy's band The Passive Resistors will include some of the Diesel Dog guys ... and will have 2 keyboard players!). I'm guessing it will be jammy at times. ;):)

     

    I've also been working on a documentary film entitled "Jamland" about a small grassroots music festival that I co-founded 8 or so years ago. Most of the filming happened 4 or 5 years ago, and we let it sit for a while before delving back into it over the past year. It is very close to being completed. Given the name, it must be kinda sorta jammy. :)  And I must admit, I'm very excited about it, because I think it's going to be good. Really good. I hope that when people from these parts see it they will feel the same way. Yes it includes some live footage of bands jamming, and some discussion about jam music, but I'm most excited about the fact that the film includes some short "life" stories about some of the musicians and people involved. I'm really excited because I think it will appeal to lots of people, not just jam fans. We are packing a heck of a lot of stuff into 30 - 35 minutes, so it should move really quickly and be very entertaining. The premiere screening will happen on Thursday June 11 in Waterloo at The Original Princess Cinema, and will include live performances as well. It's going to be a special event and I will post more detailed info about it as the date draws closer.

     

    Ok, now I really need to get some sleep as tomorrow is a full day that starts early! Thanks for digging up this thread, as it got me thinking and feeling inspired ... and it gave me a chance to do some promoting! lol :)

  12. Gathering of the Vibes 2014

    After having a great time at last year's festival, I made a relatively last minute decision to head the the Vibes this year with Liana. This was my second trip to Seaside Park for GOTV - my first one was last year with a crew of kids from this board. ;) It was Liana's first visit. We drove most of the way on Wednesday and then headed into the festival late morning on Thursday. We both had a fabulous time at the festival! Although there was some rain, the weather held up nicely and we both managed to take in lots of music over the course of the weekend. And bringing our bikes to the festival was a wise decision, as it made it easy for us to zip to the festival grounds or to the beach from our campsite in a few minutes. After setting up camp, having a few beverages, and checking out the festival grounds and beach on our bikes, we headed into the concert area on Thursday in the late afternoon. Over the course of the weekend, I managed to take in a lot of great music, with my personal highlights (in order of appearance) as follows:

     

    Strangefolk - I caught most of their set on Thursday and would definitely check them out again, as I liked the mix of lyrics and jammy music that I heard.

     

    Dark Star Orchestra - I always enjoy this band, and although there were a number bands that played before them on Thursday, it felt like things kicked into high gear when these guys started playing. For this show, they picked their own setlist rather than recreating one, and they started with Shakedown Street, so some dancing happened. :) After DSO, we opted for some needed rest rather than late night music; that ended up being our decision every night. I must be getting old. :)

     

    Keller Williams' Grateful Grass - Keller, with Reed Mathis and Jeff Austin, playing the Dead; what a great way for me to kick off Friday.

     

    Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue - loved the super high energy and funky music that these guys played.

     

    Joe Russo's Almost Dead - another excellent Grateful Dead "cover" band; would definitely check these guys out again

     

    John Fogerty - it's hard to believe that he's almost 70 years old, given how good his voice and guitar playing still are. An excellent set of radio rock tunes.

     

    Lotus: Talking Heads Deconstructed - these guys did a great job presenting the music of one of my all-time favourite bands. I had my fingers crossed that this would be good, and it was better than that. Did someone say dance party?!

     

    Leftover Salmon - I didn't get up close for these guys, and ended up socializing and snacking during their set, but I still enjoyed what I heard.

     

    Rodrigo Y Gabriela - Wow, mind-blowing. Would love to see these two in a theatre.

     

    Dumpstaphunk - Once again, did someone say dance party?!

     

    Widespread Panic - Yes, it's confirmed again. They rock big time.

     

    Donna the Buffalo - I've wanted to see this band for a long time, and after seeing them at the Vibes, I am determined to see them again. A sweet mix of music and lyrics.

     

    There were a number of other musical acts on the bill that I know I would have enjoyed, but I couldn't take it all in.

     

    Thanks to the Vibes organizers for a weekend of music that fed my soul!

    Mike, thanks for all of your work over the years ... I truly appreciate the time and energy you've put into this site, and I look forward to the next iteration of this website and discussion board, wherever they take us.

    I'm not sure what to suggest as far as a re-brand or what it would take to re-invigorate this board. Personally, I spend less time online than I used to, and I spend most of my online social time on Facebook. And that time is shrinking. I don't think that a re-brand would increase traffic and discussion, unless it was accompanied by a huge push by people who currently use this board. Is there a better word to capture what this community is about? I can't think of one, but I'm open to suggestions.

    Long live jambands.ca and the people that I've met through this site and music!

    Had a blast at the Finger Lakes show with my brother Mike! I don't get to see my brother very often, as he lives in Vancouver, so the show was an extra-special one for me because of that. I thought the band played well and I'm enjoying the new tunes.

    4 days off between chicago and charlotte eh... hmmm... adding toronto would be nice ;)

    See you in Canandaigua ... and in Toronto after they add it. ;)

    I meant this tongue-in-cheek given what happened last year.

    Skipping the phish ticket request this year and will see what I end up with when tickets go on sale.
