  1. This is fucking amazingly insane. I saw this clip on TSN last night, shot by a fan at a Grey Cup event on Friday. I've watched it many times since and I still can't believe it. The Joe Kapp-Angelo Mosca feud goes back 48 years. Mosca said afterwards that nobody shoves a flower in his face.

    The story:

  2. I agree Dave. I can see bookstores going more the way they are now, as in, more of the used variety. DVDs are still going strong in Canada moreso than the US as the industry has been reinventing itself in innovative and successful ways such as ultra cheap rental kiosks located in downtown cores and malls. I can't see the same sort of innovation happening with the publishing industry.

  3. Are books and libraries in the physical form going the way of music stores and CDs? I hope not, but I can see books going the way of vinyl. Downloading, legal or otherwise, along with ebooks have had a big impact on libraries and in sales at book stores.

  4. This has always been one of my favourite days of the year and I really think it should be a national holiday so everyone can attend a ceremony.

It would be great if everyone would actually attend a ceremony, but the meaning and message might get lost on the many that would treat November 11th like just another holiday. I prefer it the way it is since many businesses and most if not all schools have ceremonies and the media coverage is huge; nothing catches your attention like momentary mass shutdowns of businesses and moments of silence in schools.

  5. I did catch a Dickey Betts show in Toronto at the Opera House and I thought it was great. I think Dickey is probably hit or miss, the reviews of his shows can go from absolutely amazing to waste of time. Substance abuse is a toughie.

I was at that show too: March 9, 2005. I thought he was in average form, but better than his last year with the Allmans. Decent show.

  6. Point taken regarding Jessica and Liz Reed. For a second there you had me thinking Dickey had died using the word "demise" but I realize you meant in regard to his career and playing. I can't help but thinking (speculating) that his playing suffered so greatly in the last 10 years due to alcohol. Is it just me or aren't we taught in Rock n' Roll mythology that alcohol and drugs improves ones playing?

Did you ever see the 2004(?) Dickey Betts & Great Southern concert from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on HD-Net? It was shockingly bad. They sounded like a below average Allmans cover band and Betts's guitar couldn't keep up with most of the songs; Betts's playing was excruciatingly sloppy and he got seriously outplayed by Dan Toler and his son Duane.

  7. thanks Jaimoe, I needed that. Couldn't agree more with Derek on his comments regarding Blue Sky, I think Duane's solo on the song is one of the best recorded guitar solos of all time. I'm very glad he didn't mention Midnight Rider, which to be fair is a good tune, but holy fuck is it ever overplayed (and overplayed and overplayed and overplayed). Enough already.

I think the not mentioning Dickey so much has to do the subject being Duane's passing in 1971 and the legacy he left behind.

"Midnight Rider" is one song I never tire of from their overplayed catalogue.

But the article is about Derek's favourite Allmans tracks, although the RS title and lead-in is obviously Duane-centric. I find it at least curious that Derek doesn't mention Dickey on Dickey songs such as "Jessica" and "Elizabeth Reed" given that many years have passed since the ugly split (Derek is no doubt more of a Duane guy anyway). Good list. Sad about Dickey's demise.

  8. Joe was awesome. A tireless warrior and a class act in the ring and entertaining character out of it. One of the all-time greats. Sad news indeed. Look at how much he had in the tank during the last 4 rounds in the first Ali fight, dubbed "Fight of the Century":

A little CanCon. Fuck George was tough as hell, and a better technical boxer than you'd think:

  9. I started stocking up on incandescent bulbs earlier this year. I can't stand the light that CLF's give off and Christine witnessed one explode and burn at her parent's place. I don't know for sure if they're being banned but they don't seem to be stocking as much of them at stores these days.

They aren't being banned, but there's lots of controversy surrounding the government-endorsed switchover.

  10. Well, energy efficient bulbs are not a healthy alternative since they are loaded with harmful mercury and UV radiation. They are also tough to recycle and thus toxins will leak into the soil when they are thrown out. My militant treehugger wife is not an endorser of CFLs (compact flourescent lights) either. Stock up on the old bulbs.

  11. Hey POG, Factory Girl is a new restaurant, a few stores east of Allen's and the Music Hall (FG's location used to be the dismal Tex-Mex resto: Willow). FG is named after the Beggars Banquet song and the theme of the restaurant is British Invasion and old school rock/R&B. Food is fantastic (Italian), but mid-priced. Beer menu is great.

The Auld Spot is my favourite pub on the Danforth, across from the Carrot Commons (excluding The Only, which is a bit of a trek to Donlands, but worth it if you have the time). Another decent pub is The Old Nick, which is right beside the Music Hall; so is Allen's and Dora Keogh's - both are great, but the latter is mainly for drinks. If you are at Pape, the Court Jester is has an impressive menu and some good craft beers on tap.

I'd avoid the Black Swan. The main floor is fucking sketchy. You can't go wrong with any of the other choices.

Also, the two restaurants next to the New York Cafe on Broadview are fantastic: Off The Hook (fish & chips) and The Caribbean Dutchpot (roti, jerk). The former has Mill St. on tap and the Dutchpot isn't licensed, but is cheap and very very good.

  12. Dave Ball why wont we see you at this gig?

Work, mortgage $$$$ payments on my new house and I've seen Derek and Susan perform together before. It'll be a killer show though. Warm up at Factory Girl or down the road a bit at the Auld Spot. If you are on a budget, the New York Cafe on the corner of Broadview & Danforth can't be beat (cheap pints, wine and food - pizza for one rules as does Greek food!!).
