Wilson to Tour "Smile"

Lost album to surface in September

Brian Wilson will take his lost masterwork Smile out on the road this fall for a twenty-two-date tour to launch September 30th in Minneapolis.

The tour comes in support of Wilson's new recording of the 1966 album that never was. As on the new Smile, due September 28th on Nonesuch, Wilson will be backed on tour by a ten-piece band along with the Stockholm Strings and a brass octet.

Wilson hatched the ambitious album with lyricist/arranger Van Dyke Parks almost four decades ago, with plans to create a lush, orchestral follow-up to the Beach Boys' classic Pet Sounds. He abandoned the record when some of its songs were met unenthusiastically by his Beach Boys bandmates. Though some of the songs -- including "Heroes and Villains" "Cabinessence" and "Surf's Up" -- would appear on subsequent Beach Boys records, Smile as Wilson envisioned it was never released.

In addition to playing Smile, Wilson and his touring entourage will perform other gems from the Beach Boys catalog as well as cuts from his June release Getting' in Over My Head.

Brian Wilson tour dates:

I've seen The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson three times each, and will definitely consider attending the Massey Hall gig.

It's been a long wait, but North American fans will finally get their chance to hear Brian Wilson's Smile in concert this fall.

Nearly four decades after he shelved what was thought to be his studio masterpiece, Brian Wilson brought his mythical album to London stages in February.

Fans and critics went wild for the Royal Festival Hall performances, and Wilson followed up with spring and summer shows across Europe.

The North American tour launches September 30 in Minneapolis, Minn., and hits theatres and concert halls for more than a month, wrapping November 2 in Los Angeles.

In 1967, the then-Beach Boy put Smile – his follow-up to the critically lauded Pet Sounds – aside after his record label and bandmates frowned on its complex, quasi-psychedelic compositions.

He claimed at the time that the album was not commercial, and it certainly would have made the band's relatively straightlaced fans scratch their heads. Wilson described the album as a "teen-age symphony to God."

Since then, it has gained a reputation as a could-have-been-great masterpiece, and bootlegs of the sessions have made the rounds among diehard Wilson fans.

The only song from the sessions that made it out wholly intact, "Good Vibrations," with its strings and bizarre electronic instrument arrangement, has been one of The Beach Boys' most enduringly popular and critically lauded tunes.

Wilson and the Beach Boys released Smiley Smile in 1968, which owed much to the Smile sessions but was simplified for mass consumption.

All along, fans hoped Wilson would revisit his white whale, and word came out last year that he would stage the album in its entirety, as he originally intended, at performances in London.

The live debut of Smile at Royal Festival Hall February 20, preceded by a set of Beach Boys hits, received a five-minute standing ovation. By all accounts, it was worth the wait.

The story of the revival performance is the story of Wilson's journey from a drug-addicted shut-in struggling with serious bouts of depression to a confident artist able to tackle the stage once again.

He returned to live performances a few years ago and last year staged Pet Sounds in its entirety, much to the delight of fans and critics across the globe.

This fall's tour will feature Wilson performing with his 10-piece band, backed by a Swedish strings and brass octet. In addition to Smile, he'll perform a number of classic Beach Boys songs and solo favorites, as well as selections from his recently released album, Getting In Over My Head.

I saw the Beach Boys (obviously minus Carl Wilson, may you rest in peace, Brain Wilson, and Al Jardine) for free a couple of years ago and I don't know if I would make the drive to see them in Rama, ON with their current line up of only original member Mike Love and Bruce Johnston who joined in 1965. But for all of you that love the Beach Boys I just wanted to let you know they were going to be here on Thursday August 12, 2004.

I luckily saw them with Carl Wilson and Al Jardine in 1993 and again with Al Jardine in 1995 and those shows were definitely better.

So Esau, You wouldn't see Bob Dylan at the Joint in Las Vegas, NV? I know I would go to a gig like that if I could. Or you wouldn't go to a one or two night run of Dylan at Casino Rama, ON or the new venue at Niagara Falls, ON? Again I'd be there.

Thats right.

Casino shows signify the end of the road to me.I even passed my Lightfoot tickets up before he was ill.And they were freebies from a friend who worked at Casinorama.

Also,I will never enter the zero tolerance state of Nevada again unless at gun point,I had my share of that state in the 80's,never again.

Everybody has their limits, I respect that. I myself used to think that you were a washed up has been if you play Casino's. But after going to see Crosby, Stills & Nash last year, I changed my tune. I realized that I enjoyed the gig, Casino gig or no Casino gig. I really regret not seeing Ringo Starr & His All-Star band there last year as it was recorded for his new live album.
