whiteymuseum
Anyone here familiar and/or into this band?
zero
I'm torn. I liked their set at Hillside but thought it was overrated compared particularly to side stage gems like the mutherfuggin' Unicorns or mainstage Metric. Not too mention Golden Dogs with or without a dropkick to the heart. They seemed to me talented but too annoying in that 'I went to art school in Mont Royal' kind of way. I mean that sh!t works for David Byrne cause he's David Byrne and Tina Weymouth cause she's just that hot but this white starch shirts and ties thing is straight lame. I mean their compositions are good and they mean well but really this band as family extended post-rock thing has kind of been done. The lead singer reminds me way too much of a Kevin Drew Jr. and they have one tune that is a straight BSS cop. I and a number of others at hillside literally thought they were going in to something like Almost Crimes. I mean I guess you can't patent chord progressions, I just came in with good intentions and was not nearly as blown away as I was by a handful of others. whiteymuseum
Not that this is a sound argument to your point about BSS, but the Arcade Fire formed in 1998. Which I understand is pre-BSS.
zero
You might be right but those kids look distinctly younger (I'm going with 23-25) then the BSS contingent. Just to me it was a bit been there done that a la Hidden Cameras, BSS, New Pornographers. Others I was with wouldn't shut up about them though and didn't get the Unicorns at all. Go figure. skelter
I love the new album ... and zero, without a doubt The Golden Dogs are amongst the best bands in Canada right now ... I've seen them 4 times since May and they slay me every time
zero
Oh don't get me wrong the Golden Dogs slayed me. I mean if it weren't for my ironic flipping them the bird we would have had a grand old time. That's what I meant though I'll take the Golden Dogs or Unicorns over the Arcade Fire any day. And at least with those uniformed flouncing nellies I don't have to worry about the bootkick to the heart.

DevO
I caught the show in Wakefield on Sunday and I've heard the new album since then and I must say, I'm pretty impressed with this band. I didn't much musical similarity between them and BSS, but I did hear a healthy dose of 80s sounds such as The Cure or The Talking Heads, namely the echo-y vocal bellowing and bursts. The accordian adds a nice touch. The show at the Black Sheep was packed at $10 a head, and they apparently played their longest show ever, right up until they ran out of songs. New drummer too, his 3rd show with the band, he held it together pretty well with a few slips here and there. The girl in the band on accordian/vocals has a great stage presence, focused and into the music, in tears at one point i believe. They aren't my new favourite band but they've been in my head non-stop since Sunday and I'd definitely go to see their show!! AdamH
I wish I'd seen this. I get the David Byrne feeling too but it's not a bad thing. And that girl played just about every theme song from Super Mario Bros. at Hillside which really impressed me.
