The Grateful Dead in 1985....

Recommended Posts

...Were such an awesome, crazy, fucked up entity!! Garcia's vocals were at an alltime low, there were more drugs flowing through veins, noses, lungs than ever before, jerry's health was on a downhill slide....

That being said, they were fucking great!!!

For example:

9/7/85 - Grateful Dead

Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison, CO

Lineage:

SBD>Cm>Dat>CD>EAC>SHN

This is better sounding than the old version.

sounding great indeed... they were so full of great (sic)... that Frozen Logger opener is pretty nuts alright alright

my favorite years of GD are still early to mid-80s, though I love it all

Maybe for a point of contrast, just because I've listened to this show a half dozen times in the last couple of days - they really have their shit together here - I mean, the whole show's downright peppy (without that cokey, frenetic energy)!

Actually "The Frozen Logger" is a PNW folk/labour song, which is probally be why it was twisted to work as a campfire song... written in 1951 by the James Stevens of Aberdeen, WA. He worked in logging camps as a youth and later wrote The Paul Bunyan tales based on stories he heard late at night in the bunkhouse & around fires. The original first verse is rather diffrerent from the popular recorded version.

Just happen to be reading a book about American Roots/folk/labour music...the companion text for the popular PBS series.
