Over the last couple years the President (Fred Gilbert) and Vice

President (Michael Palowski) of Lakehead University have been planning

to lease out 6ha of forested campus property. This land is located

adjacent to MacIntyre River and the field house (Please see the

attached map for the approximate area).

The City of Thunder Bay is proposing to build a Grade 7 to 12 high

school on land which they currently have the Thunder Bay Country Club

golf course. This results in the golf course losing a significant

portion of their greens. As result they are looking to expand the

golf course on land that they would lease from Lakehead University

(see map). They would be cutting the forested land and leveling it to

make it a suitble area for their golf course.

This land is both uniquely valuble forest for Lakehead Unversity

being such a accessible green space that students faculty and Thunder

Bay citizins have been using for years.

As Forestry student this issue not only affects the beauty and

health of the campus but it also may threaten the quality of education

that we recieve. We use this forest in many of our classes and extra

curricular activities:

-Timbersports (This is where you practice!!)

-Campus Rec(walking, biking, camping, volley ball, relaxing by the

river)

-Urban Forestry course(Tree health and soil quality)

-soils course(soil pits)

-Dendrology course (Plant collection and ID)

-Forest Pathology course (Fungi collection and observation)

-Fish and Wildlife course (wildlife oberservation and realeasing)

-Forest Entomology (Insect colection)

-Introduction to Ecology course (water sampling)

ON Friday February 3rd there will be a LUFA meeting at 230pm to

inform both faculty and students alike on the issue and actions we can

take to ensure that our interests are met.

A Public Meeting will be taking place before Thunder Bay City council

On MONDAY FEBRUARY 20, 6:30PM

AT CITY HALL (3RD FLOOR)

500 DONALD STREET EAST

****** currently LUSU is trying to change this date since it falls on

reading week*****

This is our opportunity to bring foward concerns that we have with the

leasing of this land. We chose Lakehead for a reason and the forests

that are near us is a big part of that.

Let your voice be heard,

I apologize for the fact that I am not computer friendly (missing the attachments and such) but this is a completely viable issue that you folks should respond too.

A very good friend of mine who attends Lakehead University is looking for some support along with many others on this issue and there is a need for many more.

I support the fact that I'm not computer friendly. I've just learned that fact though. Whereas, I've always supported a good cause.

Write a letter would ya?

A friend of mine is attending Lakehead at the moment. I'm aware of the fact that BNB originated there, and I'm also aware of how good of a band they are. And how well respected they are around these parts by many of the people here, including myself.

My friend asked me if I could do anything to help. And I told him that I might be able to stir up a couple extra letters for the cause. Hence the BNB reference on this thread.

I figured it couldn't hurt to throw a great name around for a worthwhile cause. Besides, for all we know Friendly could be organizing the Bumper Pool tournament of the 21st Century as we speak. It can't be all that bad.
