Béla Fleck & The Flecktones - Sept. 13th @ Massey Hall

I think my favourite might be the one at Cafe Deluxe in Ottawa in mid-1991. Barrymore's (where they were supposed to play) had just closed, and the show got moved to CD, which was a tiny little place. A buddy and I ended up sitting cross-legged on the dance floor pretty much up against the stage.

Howard Levy was still with the band, and we discovered why he was called "The Man With Two Brains": not only did he play harmonica and keyboards at the same time, but, for short stretch, we heard two distinct melody lines come out of his harmonica; my and my buddy's jaws pretty much hit the floor, as we didn't think you could do that at all.

At one point, Victor tried swinging his bass all the way around his body. On his first try, it got about 3/4 of the way around, and got stuck. He flung it back into position, and tried again, and it got stuck again. The third (or fourth) time, it got all the way around, but knocked his mic stand over, into my lap (that's how close we were).

Aloha,

Brad
